What do you think it would take to keep Kelly long term? What sort of facilities upgrades need to be done that will satisfy him?

Kelly's new five-year contract took effect on Jan. 1, but it wasn't signed until June 18. He will earn $1.337 million this year, not including incentives. That's not exactly chump change, yet Kelly's salary ranks only fourth among the Big East's eight coaches.

Kelly already has reached incentives this season worth $134,000 and will earn an additional $150,000 if the Bearcats win the Big East again and earn another BCS bowl bid. Yet, all of the creative incentives, including $25,000 for a Top 25 finish and $10,000 for each victory against a Top 25 ranked opponent, pale in comparison to the most important item in his contract.

The University agrees to use its best efforts to build or acquire two (2) practice fields on campus as soon as possible and an indoor facility, which shall be understood to include a bubble over Nippert Stadium or some other on campus facility, as soon as possible. The University further agrees that should the Program participate in a BCS bowl game before the indoor practice facility becomes available, the University shall obtain indoor practice space at an offsite location to be selected by Director of Athletics in consultation with Coach.

If they don't come through according to the above paragraph, Kelly can opt out of his contract and avoid paying the buyout, which is $1 million if he leaves before Jan. 15, 2010. Kelly's buyout decreases by $250,000 each year.

I know what his previous deal said, but if we're to keep him long term, that deal is going to have to be redone already with some hard line promises I'd imagine. Hopefully boosters come out of the woodwork and put their wallets with their mouths are... losing him would really suck!

Looks like the practice facilities are going to be done for the start of next season, so that's one thing down.

The next most important thing would have to be some concrete language about an expansion of Nippert, including a deadline with buyout reductions, similar to the practice facility.

The third thing would be money. We can't compete with ND, OSU, USC, or almost any Big 10 school, but we at least need to make BK the highest paid head coach in the Big East. That same logic applies to his coaching staff.

These will be difficult things to get done, but they're not ridiculous. I am very happy to know that priority #1 for our current head coach is not to line his pockets, but to improve the program. The previous statement may or may not stand as truth pending ND's new coach hiring. I reserve the right to act like I never said that if things go wrong on that front.

UC doesn't have the money, adrock is right. So any pay increase would have to be done either in increments or largely incentives. Problem is, he may be happy w/ the money now, but that may not be true 2 years from now. This isn't going away regardless of whether he stays or not. Oh well...we're getting used to it.

What would it take to keep BK here in Cincy...

I heard on the radio that they were negotiating an extension right now for BK and his Staff. I wonder if there is any truth to that?

Clause 1: Highest Paid Coach in the Big East

Clause 2: If ND calls i gotta go!

I must say I have been impressed with his handling of everything so far... He has said the right things and what he has not said is as important

Nice to see UC step up. Then again, they don't really have a choice.

Thats because he is the real deal...He could just let the wins speak for themselves and cry about no one coming to the games (right Mick) but he doesn't. He's out in the community and doing charity events and public speaking! He is out there laying a foundation!
