Per Koch, UC is close to announcing a 7-year extension. Just posted on Twitter.
Awesome! Definitely good news for the program.
And, how did Koch "break" this news? Usually he writes about it a week or two after it happens. My world just got turned upside down. LOL
Hope it gets done this time...

Mick Cronin is one of the worst basketball coaches and only cared for one player who's gone now. So let's sign him for 7 years. Cincinnati..
Per Andy Katz, it's official, as of this morning. 7 years, $2.2m/year. Compared to 2013 coaches salaries, that puts him as T-18th highest, with Oklahoma's Lon Kruger.
We now have 2 coaches in the big 2 sports that are in the Top 20 nationally in terms of their pay. I think it's clear that when UC decides on something for their sports programs they can find the money to make it happen.
I'm constantly reading on these boards how our athletic program is broke yet we've got 2 high paid coaches, a high paid AD and we're spending close to 100 million to upgrade Nippert. That's all encouraging.
I'm hoping that Mick got some sort of assurances on the future of the basketball facilities during the negotiation of this contract. I think that UC will take their time figuring out what the best course of action is for that future but once a decision is made the money will be made available.
That being said congrats to Mick. It's gotta be a great feeling to land your dream job in your home town and now get paid very very well to perform that job. I've never been his biggest fan but there's certainly value in the stability this extension brings.
Spending money for Basketball and Football are more along the lines of investments as was the upgrade to Nippert which will add money to the budget. Having two competent qualified leaders overseeing those investments is a no brainer. Wouldn't want to invest that kind of money and have the three stooges running the show. You generally get what you pay for in this world. If the efforts of these three get us back in the black and competitng on a national level it will be money well spent.I'm very pleased the University is hiring good people to enhance their investment. We now have 2 coaches in the big 2 sports that are in the Top 20 nationally in terms of their pay. Great news. Here is a guy who wanted to be here and has earned his raise. As he contiues to show the nation and media how good a coach he is the level of recruits will continue to climb. The guy has earned his pay. As for his style of play I hope he never stops recruiting hard working good young men in favor of one and doners. Also expecting his players to play hard nosed defense every minute they ares on the floor is not a bad thing. Like many I would like to see the ball go in the hoop a few more times a game but not at the expense of defense. As some very good coaches have taught him you don't guard you don't play. I love that accountability and think it is the key to his success.
L-T you don't have to sacrifice defense to be better offensively.Demanding your players guard is not a problem for your offense. We need to play better on the offensive end but you don't do it by sacrificing what got you there. Lots of things go into what attracts fans. The fact that our defense is better then our offense is not the reason we didn't tract fans in my opinion. Weather, economy, facility and schedule are prime contributors."Defense Only" has gotten us bounced from the tourney pretty quickly under Cronin. If a little defense is sacrificed to become a better balanced squad, then that is what he needs to do to get to the next level. We've had as good of a defense as any school in Division 1 for years, and have very little to show for it in the way of NCAA tourney success. "Defense wins championships", but "defense only" does not. It also doesn't attract a lot of fans which is probably why we lost about 800 fans a game this year in spite of being ranked in the top 20 all year.
We'll see if the supposed upgrade in recruits leads to the desired upgrade in offense.
