Scouts were very impressed with him. He is going to be a solid defensive enforcer from day 1.

Does anyone know where we can find a link to his game (replay)

ESPN 3 I believe should have it.

I wasn't overly impressed. Defensively I think he could play right away because of his shot blocking. But I don't think he'll add anything on offense. But I think he had like 5 blocks, 1 point, 1 turnover and played about half the game. I saw him make a good defensive play on one end and then promptly turn the ball over. To me, he didn't look that interested in getting offensive rebounds. I know in an Allstar game it is hard to judge, particularly big guys, but I'm not expecting much out of him the first couple years if he does come to UC.

Don't get me wrong, I hope we get him, but don't expect him to come in and dominate right away. Gonna take a couple years for offense to get there, imo.

I would not expect him to come in and start. I would expect him to get 5-7 minutes off the bench.

People love the idea of having a freshman come in and dominate but it is so rare.

How big did he look?

He had good size, a quick jump off the floor and unbelievable timing. He would be a great get in my opinion. I was also impressed with how quick he got up and down the floor. His sprint down the floor did not look like that of a big man, but more like a 3. Has a great motor and understand his game.

h

ya i dont see him dominating on offense but defensively he will be very dominant. and honestly thats just as good 7 blocks is killin 7 10 points it changes the game. he is another jackson type in a way

Think he would see more than 5-7 minutes. Is a high impact player that changes the game every minute he is on the floor. Offense isnt as bad as advertised. Had 25 the other night. Is someone who understands his game and uses it to his advantage. Cronin said all year when we get 40 deflections we are probably going to win. Obekpa is a deflection machine and would fit right in. He is our number 1 target for a reason and I am getting anxious to see where he chooses to go to school. Go get him Cats!

I tend to think he would see 10-12 minutes a night depending on the match ups. I still think Gaines is going to be a big factor next year. There are going to be a decent number of minutes up for grabs next year as no one is guaranteed to start at the 5.

Gaines could be our Fab Melo. He is only a inch shorter and I think he has a better vertical.

He just needs to be able to play without fouling.

fab has 30 pounds on gaines and is actually capable of holding a basketball without getting stripped.

gaines has terrible footwork and handsm has no concept of playing defense, and didn't even rebound aggressively when he played this year. i really have no idea what anyone is going off of to expect a "jump" from him next year. there weren't even flashes this year.

For the Bearcats or in general?

Maybe dominate is too strong, but I'd be shocked if he wasn't our best 5 next year if he comes. Freshman are making huge impacts all over the country and he's among the best.

5-7 minutes is about what JDavis got this year as a frosh. I'll put it this way, if we're going to play Obekpa 5-7 minutes he should go somewhere else.

If we need him for more than 5-7 minutes we are in trouble.

He is a marginal offensive player who has a high defensive motor. He has never see players like he will see in the Big East.

I want him. I hope he comes so we can develop him. I would think he would be behind Gaines, Jackson, Cheik and Ellis.

Maybe he proves otherwise...

I don't think we will "need" him for more than 5-7 minutes but I have a feeling his play will warrant more like 10-12 minutes especially if he is as good a shot blocker as it appears he is. Throw in the style of play that Cronin wants to play next year and I really think he could play a decent role as a freshman. I hope he decides to come to UC.

Just watched the replay of the E vs W game.

I knew he wasn't Yancy Gates but he didn't look that big. He also got pushed around on both ends of the court. His rebounding will have to improve significantly (positioning, timing, and power/finesse) -- like I said, he got pushed a bit.

He absolutely disappeared on offense. Someone with his athleticism should be able to create his own shot consistently. His footwork was not impressive and his hands weren't soft like Yancy's ---- so there is definitely some room for improvement. He can run the court pretty well but appeared to take possessions off from time to time.

PS: His free-throws definitely remind me of Shaq aka Briqs.

But I don't usually watch a lot of HS basketball so it's hard to compare fairly.

.

This Noel kid on the other hand looks pretty good --- maybe Mick should go after him.

Lets all make sure we take what we saw in this game with a grain of salt. This was a high school all star game where there was absolutely nothing on the line. All these guys are committed to their schools or have their list that is not going away. They basically just played a street ball game for a free trip to the Big Easy. Not exactly an environment to get a good barometer of a player's skills.

Kelvin Gaines was the only player on the roster that knows how to get proper post position.

if u see gaines in person and watch him in practice you will think differently of him. he did show flashes of his blocking ability in games he played in. you will also like the fact he runs the floor very well in transition.
