Overrated coaches

I'm not a huge fan of Boeheim but it's hard to say they are overrated when they have 900+ wins and a national championship.

Honestly......Huggins. We all worshiped the ground he walked on for taking UC to one final four and two elite eights. Don't get me wrong, I loved him too. But he choked far too often.

lol....you didn't just go there did you? Bearcat Jeff has had peace and harmony all week and you do a Kim Jong Un on him.

So, a coach that has been to 2 final fours and 2 elite eights is overrated?

Personally, I think if you have either:

1) Won a championship or;
2) Made multiple appearances in the Final Four or;
3) Won multiple conference championships or;
4) Regularly reach the Sweet 16 (40-50% of the time you make the tournament)

than you cannot be overrated.

Steve Lavin, Sean Miller, Shaka Smart are three that come to mind for me.

I'm not sure I get the Shaka Smart inclusion. I think he hasn't proven himself enough yet to be elite, but what he has done with VCU has been outstanding so far. I guess it depends on how highly rated he is.

Boeheim being #2 is absurd. I hate him, but he is a top coach. Take the Bleacher Report for what it is: Unqualified people writing (generally) uninformed and biased articles. I will read it from time to time when I am starving for information on my teams though.

Agreed. Notice that Huggs didn't even make honorable mention in the article. Most intelligent observers understand that the coach didn't choke when the national player of the year breaks his leg, or someone banks in a half court shot at the buzzer to beat you, or you get beat by a cheating program, or the refs make a blatant horrible call in the last minute to beat you, or a vastly under-seeded program has a guy go off for about eight 3s in a row on a career night to take you down 105-101 in OT, and the list goes on. That same coach leaves and spends one year at a former losing program and completely transforms it into what eventually becomes a strong winning program nationally....then goes to another program and immediately takes it to the sweet 16 and Final 4. I wouldn't call that overrated.

Those Cincinnati teams did have some tough breaks and that's just the way things go in the tournament. They basically owned that conference though and it included Louisville and Memphis who are considered to be great programs. The effect Huggins had on Kansas State though is probably the most phenominal thing he has ever done.

He's made one cinderella run. Since then they are always a popular pick to be a surprise team to make a deep run. I'm not saying he's not a good coach, just that I don't think he deserves the run he gets. To be honest I think that's why him and Stevens stay where they are and they're smart to. They know it's a different world in a high major conference with diffeent expectations. A run to the elite 8 or final 4 in a mid major conference holds clout for a lot of years. Once it's done in a Big 6 conference, it's expected.

Smart and Stevens are finally realizing what a lot of up and coming coaches before them didn't and that is the grass is not always greener on the other side. Why would either want to go to UCLA who just fired a very successful coach when they could stay where they are at and be set for life just based on what they have already done. The money may have been greater, but it comes with unreal expectation to live up to.

Plus, both schools have landed in good conferences that give them the ability to go out and recruit better talent. Neither coach would be any more successful by jumping to UCLA or any of the other programs that have openings right now. They might make a little more money, but that comes with the risk of being out of a job in 3-4 years.

VCU's style of play can be disruptive with high defensive pressure and good guard play. I think that's why they are the usual non major pick to make a deep run. Smart has put a 3 good seasons together and looks to be building a sustainable program. I think he's earned the respect he's got along with Stevens at Butler. These programs usually overcome a lot in regards to resources available and recruiting. If you're looking for as close to we can get as true student athletes the mid majors are the place for it.

Butler and vcu are crap mid major programs. Their coaches stay there because they know they couldn't succeed at any real program

Buh-bye.

I hate Sean Miller with a passion, but I do think he's a good coach. Shaka Smart is a good coach too. Don't get slamming those two.

Agree on JTIII and Mike Brey. Definitely think Lavin is hugely overrated.

I can't bash Boeheim. You don't win 900 if you're not good.

Personally, as a recruiter, Calipari is at the top. As an X's and O's strategist, I think Calipari sucks.

Calipari= 5 star recruiter, 1 star Coach

#1 recruiting class 4 yrs in a row, 1 NC, 1 first round loss in NIT

Disagree, Calipari is an average coach and a big cheater. Look at why he left UMASS and Memphis, cheating. Coaching wise, he always has to coach freshmen, so you can't win a title every year. Think about Duke, they get the same caliber players for 2,3, and sometimes 4 years. Cal has great players to work with for only 1 year at a time. He is only a great recruiter because of the Kentucky brand itself (easy to sell to pitch to a recruit, amazing practice facilities and an incredible fan base, along with a great tradition) and he can get people to take tests for said great players (I.e. Derrick Rose's SAT) and shell out $$$.
