This is from Paul Dehner's blog.

A shroud of questions hovered over the status of Rashad Bishop ever since his indefinite suspension from the University of Cincinnati Bearcats team just before the start of the Big East tournament in March.

UC head coach Mick Cronin shed light on Bishop's situation at a mid-summer press conference Monday and it appears Bishop is only weeks away from possibly returning to the program.

Cronin said Bishop's scholarship was not renewed and he was given the choice to stay in Cincinnati and attempt to earn it back or move elsewhere. Bishop chose to stay at UC and is currently in the middle of a six-week "commitment program" where he must prove he is dedicated to being part of the team.

"Moreso showing myself, (Athletic Director) Mike Thomas and his teammates that he is willing to do the things we want him to do off the floor to be on the floor," said Cronin, stating he can reward a scholarship to Bishop at the completion of the six weeks. "To me, you have to have a level of integrity in your program, it is one of the reasons I was brought here. Another thing is you have to have a commitment level to your teammates. I love Rashad, he is a great kid. He has worked really hard at it. He is close, he's got a few more weeks on his commitment program. Nobody wants him on our team more than I do. Probably other than Rashad."

Cronin said Bishop is currently enrolled in school, but would not specify if the rising senior is paying his own way.

Bishop was widely regarded as the top defender on the Bearcats last year while averaging 8.4 points and 4.4 rebounds. He showed flashes of brilliance including a 19-point breakout against Villanova and 17-point surge against Marquette. Both games ended in close defeats.

If reinstated he would be the second-leading scorer returning, behind Yancy Gates.

Cronin said a decision on Bishop's status will come in early August, prior to when the team begins its practices for an exhibition trip to Canada.

"He and I will sit back down again," Cronin said. "There are monitors on him every day as far as what he is doing from a commitment standpoint, on and off the floor.

"He wants to be here and I commend him for taking the risk to doing what he has to do to be on this basketball team and help us finish our process of getting it back to what we want it to be."

I hope Rashad can clear his head, and get his act together. His defense would definitely benefit this team. However, if he would pose to be a cancer to the team, I would rather not have him on the roster. I trust Mick has this under control and will make the right decision. I liked his comments about integrity and commitment to teammates.
Go Bearcats!

I would be shocked if he is not on the team when the team travels to Canada in August (or is it September?). I believe this has been a big wake up call for Rashad and I think he will do whatever is necessary to be in uniform this season.

I agree. I think this is process is just a going through the motions type of thing. If Mick didn't intend to bring him back he would have released him last year. Bishop's presence will be huge for this team this year. There are too many question marks. He brings solid defense and another scoring option and hopefully some senior leadership. I think he starts until if/when Kilpatrick takes his place or Parker's.

I think from a size and defensive point, Rashad will start at the 3. Assuming he is back, I look for the starting lineup to look like this:

PG - Cash
SG - Kilpatrick
SF - Bishop
PF - Gates
C - Thomas

I think Parker will be the first off the bench.

Agree...Parker will rotate in at pg and then rollover to sg in a 3 guard rotation with Dixon or Davis putting up 10 minutes unless one of them surprises us all and really plays over their heads.

Gotta say, I'm not feeling good if the team is relying on a kid that got kicked off the team at the end of his junior year for leadership.

I think one of the guards HAS to be a leader this year. Vocal. Cash has to get it done. Killa will be a freshman really so that is a lot to lay on him. So, really, Cash is about the best bet. Not really sure who else could get it done???? Parker? Dixon?

All I know is Bishop is certainly not one of my favorite Bearcats ever. Hope he can change that.

rashaad bishop

Rashaad will hopefully be hear next yr and i think he will be a major contributor to the team offensively and defensively. His stroke isnt that bad and hes physically big enough and strong enough to take the ball into the paint. Plus i dont think hes that bad of a ball handler. If he and Yancey can wake up this team has definatley more than what they need to make the tounament and do pretty good!!!! can he play with fire is the question?????

I can agree to that, but at the same time if he can get past his mistakes and come in and play hard and be mature and gain the respect of the team that can't be a bad thing. The players know what he did and if he can gain back their trust and confidence I am happy with that. Players will naturally look up to a senior (assuming they respect him). His experience, especially on defense could be big with guys like Kilpatrick and Jackson and even Parker.

Kilpatrick may be freshman, but he will be one of the leaders on this team. Thomas, Parker, and Cash will be as well. I do believe there is something to said for a kid that makes a mistake, owns it, and does what is necessary to turn things around. I think it's a good example of working thru adversity and taking ownership. He had the option to leave and stayed knowing there were no guarantees.

I agree with your comment about Bishop working thru adversity and taking ownership. I am pulling for the kid.

Count me as waiting until I see it with my own eyes. He'll be a senior this year, he really didn't have anywhere to go and he knows that. From the reports of how he acted after he got kicked off the team and how he has played in DSL, I'll be surprised if we see a different Bishop this year.
