Troy Caupain

I disagree. I think there are plenty of these questions asked of Mick and he would be the first to tell you, as any good leader, that he doesn't have all the answers and doesn't always push all the right buttons. You make the best decision at the time and learn from the successes and failures.

Don't you think this message board would be a lot more fun if people were actually talking in specifics rather than generalities? Here, I'll start. I think Mick should look into using the high post offense much in the same way Huggins did in Kenyon's senior year. I think Gary is a good enough passer and shooter to be a double/triple threat from the high post. It would change the focal point of the defense and force them to adjust. As long as Gary is strong with the ball, you could use it against man or zone and open up shooters on the outside or cutters toward the basket. There would also be the potential for a drive to the hoop. Gary is really the first player in Mick's tenure that I think can perform well in that set and force the defense to play him honestly.

See, we can discuss that. Others may disagree and that's great. Hard to discuss, "Mick's offense sucks." What do you want to see different about it? Saying, "that's for the coach to figure out" is a cop out answer on a message board.

Same thing goes for the players. I'd like to see Gary get more aggressive on offense. I'd like to see Troy shoot a higher percentage now that he has more established weapons around him. I'd like to see Jacob get to the free throw line more like SK did. I want to see Quadri and Justin provide valuable minutes off the bench without throwing leads away as happened many times last year. I think we do better in discussing the players like this (and Jacob, you have been calling for Troy to shoot a higher percentage for months which is a perfect example) but I think there are other areas that we can be more factual or opinionated and less emotional.

I get what you're saying...but I think these kind of conversations happen all the time in the game threads. Hard to keep that kind of convo going when we haven't had a real game to evaluate in months. It's been a long offseason!

I agree, it has been a LONG offseason. Tuberville and the football team hasn't helped. Friday can't get here soon enough!

The question is...can Cronin exceed expectations with a talented team vs a team with little talent. He's exceeded expectations with lesser talent in years past. That's one of the reasons I thought he was a good coach. Time for the next step.

To that point, I am hoping injuries are minimal this year so we can get a clear picture of what the coaching staff can do. Last year's team was a shell of itself due to injuries by the end of the year.

I hope so too but I have run out of excuses. 10 years is enough to get it done. I am in put up or shut up mode.

Amen, I find the outlook of so many of this board so mystifying.

Coach #1 - Everyone openly hates him (rightfully so). He takes his team to the post season every year he's been here and doesn't win anything of any significance. He doesn't compete for any kind of championships and he's full of excuses. He tells a fan to "go to hell" and "get a job" and everyone freaks the F out.

Coach #2 - Many fans LOVE him. He takes his team to the postseason every year but never wins anything of any significance. He doesn't compete for any kind of championships and he's full of excuses. He also openly spent a week and half last March entertaining offers from another school and people started a twitter # in his support.

Now it looks like Coach #1 might miss the post season for the first time and the mob is ready with their pitchforks to do him in (again, rightfully so).

I wonder if Coach #2 fails to make the post season this year would the reaction from some on this board be the same?? I doubt it and it really makes you scratch your head. How can so many people be so supportive of such a mediocre coach?

I expect, if healthy, Evans to have the ball at the end of late game situations. With his ball skills, size and athleticism, he can rise up and get a shot off much easier than Troy can. At the end of games, last possession, teams were switching smaller guards off Troy and putting longer wings on him which gave him trouble. That won't affect Evans the same way.
It will also mean that they won't be switching off TC. That is a good thing.

This is a Bearcat message board. You can use names. If you can't see the difference in the two, I can't help you.

Why don't we stick with talking about TC and not start the bashing of the coach.

The problem is the TC's play is also at times a reflection of the coach. The two topics aren't mutually exclusive.

I think Troy is a great player and has had a remarkable career here at UC despite the limitations of the staff.

So you say Troy is a great player but his play is a direct reflection of the coach yet in spite of the coach??

I'll tell you one thing about being around Troy or ever standing next to him he's a tall dude. I mean it would be like AJ Green basically playing point guard for us. I love having some height at the pg.

I do agree that he needs to get to the line more. I think our whole team does. Him Evans and Johnson can really score from the line they just need to get there.

It's OK to say the coach can do more but has done OK. I want him to do more but I think he has done ok. Let's face it...most of us have extremely high standards. That doesn't mean the coach is a bad coach. I'm hoping for bigger and better things. Every year we don't achieve that is another year I want to try Something new. Let's keep things in perspective. We have a good coach...we all hope he's got another gear left in him for greatness.

I edited my comment, it wasn't worded correctly.

Listen, I don't have any gripes about Troy, it's mostly others that do. I'd hate to see what this team would look like without Troy on. Troy is a great player who plays in a system that limits his full potential. That's all I'm saying.

Instead of a thread that potentially allows people to openly criticize the best player on our team how about we direct the criticism where it belongs? Or better yet we could not complain about a guy like Troy Caupain at all, but I didn't open that door.

DISCLAIMER FOR ALL BCT MEMBERS:

If you thought I was bad before and you don't like my commentary I beg you to block me. I would love nothing more than for Mick to win big this year and prove me wrong but I know that won't happen.

My criticism of a coach who laid an egg last season with his "best team yet" and then spent the off-season courting UNLV certainly isn't going to be toned down this season.

If you disagree and want to have a civil debate I'm all for it, I have no problem beating you in an argument and putting your brain in a pretzel. If you're a mental midget who can't stand opinions other than your own (otherwise known as a progressive or hipster) then please block me. I'd rather not have the same arguments with YOU PEOPLE all season long.

Lol. I don't have a problem debating you. I have never blocked anyone. I don't have a problem keeping things civil...Mr. I'll put your brain in a pretzel.

While some of what you said makes sense, making the "postseason" for the two sports is far different. 6-6 gets you a bowl game. What does 16-16 in basketball get you? If you're lucky, an NIT birth? Half of D-1 college football teams play in a bowl game, while 19% of college hoops teams make the NCAA tournament (and that's factoring in all 68 out of 351 teams...Mick has never gotten worse than a 10-seed, meaning he's finished Top 40 for 6 straight years).

If Mick fails to make the NCAA Tournament this year, I wouldn't be flipping out like I am with Tubs, but I think it would put him on the warm (not hot) seat. Even a 1st round exit will have me getting a little tired. He really needs to make some kind of noise this year.
