And therein lies negative reinforcement. The way to coach is do this do that.

I think that's more semantics than anything, but I do get your point. Bottom line is the players love Cronin and many come out saying he is like a father to them once they graduate. Plus the parents praise the way he is with their kids. Negative reinforcement is not something I'm worried about with Cronin.

I agree with your first paragraph...we don't know when he isn't pulling guys for mistakes...just that he's a bit trigger happy compared with other coaches. Obviously some coaches are trigger happy as well.

But for the second paragraph I am not sure. We just played Bellarmine who had many players capable of moving the ball. I can't for the life of me think that are guys are so BB IQ clueless over the past few years with SK, CW and JP that we couldn't impliment a quick pass movement offense better than a D2 team. Maybe because Cash was never 100% but IDK. However, we now have some added quickness, length, depth and athletecism so if Cronin REALLY wants to do it...we should be able to. Not only should we be able to move around without the ball...we also have added length to pass over the top of defenses when the situation calls for it.

We'll see. I really hope this is the year it starts.

Honestly I do. None of those players showed the ability to do it. Cronin went after raw players with upside or straight out athletes because that's what he could get. He couldn't land both the athletes and the players with basketball IQ. I think the players we got now fall more into the latter category. Obviously time will tell. I wish in the past he would have gone after some of both types of players instead of all athletes.

It honestly doesn't surprise me either that you'll find better fundamentals at the D2 level or more so the mid-major level of D1. That's why those teams can win come March. They institute their gameplans as playing smarter, not being better talents. Once they run into a team with the better talent that can play the fundamentals they struggle. I know it's not quite that easy and I'm not saying there's not talent at the mid-major level, but there's a reason a player goes to a Duke or Kentucky vs. a Cincinnati (hopefully that gap is closing) and goes to a Cincinnati vs. a Creighton or a St. Joes.

I'd love for us to start a season at some point in the future and hear about all the reasons why we're going to be a good team and not all the reasons why we might not be good. Every season the groundwork for the eventual excuses is laid before the season even starts.

well define a good season what do you consider a good season? round 32 round 16 what is it?

OK, here's why we won't embarrass ourselves:
While we don't really have any superstars, we have depth at every position (except 5). We should be able to protect the ball fairly well, we have a few players capable of scoring, we're quick, athletic and ..............let's play a few tougher opponents to add to the list.
I think after the NC State game, we'll have a better idea of our capabilities. Titus will have his hands full with T.J. Warren, but should keep him contained. But let me not get ahead of our next opponent. Each game will be an experience and will bring more experience. I think we fare well.

Well said! I really love having a quality game like NC State so early in the schedule. Our young guys will have to adapt quick. That could be a good thing for us.

UCalum, I really am of the oposite side of the coin. I perfer letting the Frosh grow against weaker opponents, gain some experience and confidence and then take on some quality opposition. Transitioning from high school to college is tough enough for these kids would perfer easing them into the step up in competition.

Waite, NC State has as many Frosh as we do. They're in a rebuilding transition. They have one scorer a la SK and no bigs. You could describe either team without using the team name, and think both were the same team. Same size, scoring distribution, expectations, etc. Interesting matchup - at least on paper.

Yeah you do have a point, but then again it is just a game at the end of the day. You put the ball in the hoop more than the other team and you win. Now I do understand all the different aspects of the transition they have to adjust to, but these kids are all players and will be just fine. I enjoyed having the Alabama game early in the year last season. Quality opponent to test us and give us something to work on. That shot Cash hit was money too! And it was early on and I was on the edge of my seat watching that entire game.

OMG that was one of the best ends to a UC I have seen at Fifth Third. It was so quiet when Cash got the ball, you could hear the lights buzzing, then it was crazzzzzy!
