Terrible guard play! Not to mention our defense was beyond embarrassing. More than half of UConn 3's were wide open. Love JJ but man, the freshman showed his age today with not being ready for the ball and reacting poorly when he did. He had at least 4 travels. I hope this opens their eyes that they haven't won jack sh!t yet.

"You can win with our guards were as bad as they were today...no excuses."-Mick on 700.."They didn't want to be here...and it showed"

As Cash goes, the team goes? That's not always true, but against quality guards he tends not to attack the middle as much, or make himself an integral part of the offense.
Gotta work on that.

Tough losses always make for quiet rides home. We cant win them all and UConns guards played well today. 2 more games left. Keep the faith. Go Cats.

Mick Cronin: "We had some guys that looked like they would rather be at the Kenwood Towne Centre today."

CINCINNATI (AP) - Kemba Walker scored 11 of his 16 points in the second half Sunday, and No. 14 Connecticut snapped its two-game losing streak by pulling away from Cincinnati for a 67-59 victory.

The Huskies (21-7, 9-7 Big East) hadn't lost three in a row all season. They led for all but 29 seconds against Cincinnati (22-7, 9-7), which was coming off some of its biggest wins of the season.

Walker, who leads the conference in scoring at 23 points per game, made three consecutive baskets that built Connecticut's lead to 11 points.

Jeremy Lamb added 17 for the Huskies, who went 10 of 19 from behind the 3-point arc.

Yancy Gates had 14 points for Cincinnati, which has lost three of its last four home games. The Bearcats had won their last three overall, including victories over Louisville and Georgetown that put them in position to make the NCAA tournament for the first time since Bob Huggins was coach.

The Bearcats set their defense to stop Walker. He had at least two players on him whenever he drove to the basket. The Huskies led the entire first half - they got up by as many as eight - despite only five points from Walker.

UConn hit a flurry of 3s to stay ahead. Lamb and Roscoe Smith made two apiece, and the Huskies shot 43.5 percent overall from the field to hold a 30-27 advantage at halftime.

Walker picked up his third foul with 16:37 to go, and Cashmere Wright made both free throws for a 33-32 lead, Cincinnati's only one in the game. It lasted for 29 seconds.

The 3 got UConn back ahead. Smith and Shabazz Napier made shots from behind the arc during a 12-2 run that gave the Huskies their biggest lead, 47-37, with 12:18 to go. Then, Walker made his three consecutive shots to put UConn in control the rest of the way.

The long-range shooting was quite out of character. Connecticut ranks 12th in the Big East, making 33.5 percent of its 3-point attempts.

Thomas played 8 minutes, had zero rebounds or points. Did commit two fouls tho.

Larry Davis played 24 minutes..had two points.

Cash played 24 minutes, had zero fg, 3 points all on FT's.

Justin Jackson played 19 minutes...had 6 TO's.

Tough loss. We struggle vs. good guard play. Lack of intensity leads to lapses in defense and open shots. They buried every one. Surprised it was as close as it was. Hopefully this team can take this loss as a lesson as to what will happen with getting too big a head and not showing up to play. Need one of the next two.

We’ll start by saying that it took an hour and 45 minutes before the UC players emerged from their locker room to take questions from the media. Once they came out they were ready with their mea culpas, particularly Yancy Gates, who said the Bearcats might have become complacent after their win at Georgetown on Wednesday night.

“We felt like, OK, we won on the road, now we’re going to come home and it’s just going to happen instead of going out there and playing to make it happen,” said Gates, who led UC with 14 points and eight rebounds. “You just hope that reality sets back in that we’re still not a guaranteed lock in the NCAA Tournament. If we lose these next two games, we definitely won’t be in.”

Play of the game: Darnell Wilks’ one-handed alley oop slam off a feed from Gates, who stole the ball and dribbled down the court to set up Wilks.

Player of the game: UConn guard Kemba Walker. He was held to six points below his average of 23, but when UC cut the UConn lead to six in the second half he scored seven straight points after taunts from a UC fan who was telling him he couldn’t shoot. Aftet he made a 3-pointer, he looked to toward the fan and smiled.

Great. Now we have fans who are dumb enough to motivate the other team.
(sigh)

Players all find motivation in their own ways. Walker really didn't need much though. The boy is a stud and can play some ball. A big miss for Clifton when he headed to New England.

I really wish our own camp would stop campaigning for UC to be out of the tournament. There is absolutely no reason to believe that losing the next 2 puts UC in danger to miss the tournament, but suggesting that to everyone cant help.

Very disappointing they didn't come mentally ready to play. That really is it for this team. when they are mentally ready they can play with anybody. When they aren't, well....

I apologize for not being on much lately. Have some personal things I have needed to give my attention to. Go Bearcats!

Yeah that is my only concern with this team. If they come metally and physically tough to a game, they can and will play with anyone, if they aren't ready well we've seen what happens then.

Agree

They came out flat.

One they started pressing though, they were getting back into the game. They played with a purpose. Not sure what happened to that press the rest of the game. Seemed like the PG version compared to how they were pressing earlier

Was at the game and not only were the players fired up after those press points, but the crowd was crazy.

The problem, as Cronin said post game, is that some of the players aren't mentally strong to overcome their mistakes. If Cash or Dixon makes a mistake, they let it linger and affect their play the rest of the game. Its easy when things are going your way, like in the previous 3 games, but to fight through difficult stretchs when things are going against you takes mental toughness that some of these guys don't possess as yet. As has been mentioned previously, the toughest part of the rebuilding process was not having upperclassmen to teach the younger guys what it takes to win consistently in this league. Part of that is teaching them mental toughness. Pittsburgh is a prime example of this, and why they continue to excell in the league. This will become less of an issue as we start having more 4 year guys who are used to success in the program. They will be able to pass on the 'Bearcat way' to the 1st and 2nd year players. We are already seeing some of this in this years freshman class, and is one of the reasons that SK and JJ have been impact players on this years team.
