They are DESPERATE for a marquee win after losing the Georgia Tech last night. This is going to be a major game, an all out war. UC better come prepared.

4:00 pm on Saturday on CBSSN

I think we'll be -2.

Melvin Johnson can fill it up. He averages 19.6 and shoots 16 FG per game and about 9 3s (at 45%). Stop him and you stop VCU. Last night against GT he was 6-17 with 0 REB and 0 AST...they lost by 13.

VCU is 5-4...wins over Prarie View A&M (75-50), Radford (92-74), American (72-44), Old Dominion (76-67), and Middle Tennessee State (62-56). Losses are against Duke (79-71), Wisconsin (74-73), Florida State (76-71), and Georgia Tech (77-64).

They are more tested than us and on their home floor. Gotta bring the big boy defense, rebounding, and intensity WHILE STILL being crisp and active offensively. This is no time to bring a 50-something point effort. We are just as desperate for a marquee win.

They allow 66.3 PPG despite being ranked 58th in tempo. We HAVE to be efficient. They are ranked 45th overall in KenPom.

UC 69
VCU 64

I hope UC remembers the ass kicking VCU gave them at home last year. That alone should give them enough motivation. This is a must win for us. Not sure how it will go. Still not confident UC has the drive to step up and play with some toughness and use good bball IQ.

Wow, Gelawn Guyn's 4-4 ETSU team beat Georgia Tech and GT took down VCU by 13. We really can't afford to lose this game at all. It will be tough, but we have to do it some way, some how.

This team is not very big as there tallest player is 6'10 but doesn't play alot, nor score or rebound when he is in.

Other than him, its mostly our bigs against 6'7 guys. They have 2 6'9 guys but history has shown that they only play them against less opponents.

UC should be fired up to win this game. They got beat by 20 on there home floor 2 hours after hearing Cronin had a medical issue. I expect these guys to be very motivated.

In the first VCU matchup, the thing that killed UC was the 3 point shooting as VCU hit 15 3's that game. You wont win too many games when your opponent hits that many.

Melvin Johnson dropped 4 3's on us last year and is not at all shy to shoot them as against Georgia tech I believe he took 10 and another player took that many as well.

We need to contest every 3 and beat them in the post and absolutely crush them in rebounding. Also protect the ball as they are one of the top teams in the country stealing the ball. Also I really don't like that VCU has now dropped 2 games in a row, they will be fighting for there life.

The Good for UC: They dont have Shaka Smart, they aren't very tall, They get there shots blocked a lot, they lost 2 starters of which hit 4 3's against us last year, If you stop the 3 you stop them as they have one of the lowest 2pt% in the country, Because there small they don't get fouled alot and thus dont shoot many free throws.

The bad for UC: VCU forces a ton of turnovers (9th best in the country) and they do it via steals (2nd best in the country), Over all they have a good D (27th in Kenpom), Even though they are small they offensive rebound pretty well.

But overall it seems that VCU offensive is not very good. They win by the 3 point shot but dont shoot it much better than us. We just need to take care of the ball, stop the 3 and we should win

I just have nightmares of watching them shoot wide open corner 3 after wide open corner 3 off the same exact play last year.

Please not this year.

i would expect a differnet kinda game this year. But like I said, them losing 2 in a row is scary.

also there point guard is super turnover prone. I hope we more than soft press him to force more. He had 6 last night and averages nearly 4 per game

Great post.

Seriously. I just checked that box score...Quadri only played 2 minutes but I swear he gave up 6 3s bc he couldn't get to the line in time to contest the shot.

I'm not too worried about a two game losing streak giving them extra motivation. One game should have done the trick. Maybe they just aren't that great. If we lose this one maybe we aren't that great. Gotta take care of business in this game...no excuses!

Man it was just brutal. I had really good seats for that game. Lower level and I just watched then torch us over and over and over. Hope its different this year.

Amen. No need to say anything more.

Watching VCU play Tuesday night after the Bearcats game they didn't impress me at all on the offense, but defense is a different story. They play how Cronin wants his team to play on defense - tough. Everywhere the ball goes you see VCU flock to it. On the offense side I saw them miss so many open looks and their main player Brooks was playing horrible. If he plays horrible, it's really bad news for them. As long as we make some of our open shots I don't see us losing this game. I think we can D them up. I have a really good feeling about this game for us. Keep in mind on our losses we lost to an extremely good team in X at Cintas which a missed 3 by Evans to bring us to 4 points was a huge difference, and a buzzer beater shot by Butler. We are still a very good team and VCU is down this year. We win this game.

We really really need to shut down Melvin Johnson.

That guy can off.

His lowest scoring performance of the season was just 13 points. Im hoping UC can hold him to single digits and just 1 3pt at the most.

He put up 36 points against FSU, and in the 20's vs Wisconsin and duke.

He's only had 1 game where he made less than 3 3 pointers (and he still hit 2). They will do there absolute best get it him open. I will be pretty upset if I see him shooting wide open 3's from the corner.

Melvin Johnson scares me..

19.6 points, 45.6% on three pointers on nearly 9 attempts a game. Mick compared him to SK.

He alone can't beat us though. I think Mick said that no one else on the team has more then 10 made 3's on the year.

we need to shut this dude down
