What Made You Become A Bearcat Fan

Great to see some new posters in this thread.

I moved to Cincinnati to go to college and had made up my mind during my junior year of high school. It happened to be Kenyon's senior year (the injury year). The team was so good that year I talked them up to everyone at my high school since I was the only one heading to Cincinnati. When he got injured and we got eliminated I took a lot of crap. The next year I was all about the team and watched as many games as I could from several hours away. By the time I stepped foot on campus, I already knew every player, every recruit, etc.

I was lucky to attend during some peak years for UC basketball (mostly the Logan era).

I wasn't much into college football until I got here, but I loved that we could get in for free and ended up being friends with mostly sports junkies here so we all went to the games. The game that put it over the top was the day where they bused us all to PBS for the 1st time to play Ohio State. Lots of my friends were from Central or Northern Ohio and were torn going into the game (not me). When UC put up the amazing fight and almost ruined a national championship for the Buckeyes, all of them were sold on following UC football. That was the day IMO that made a lot of people pick a side and stop following both teams or UC BBall/ OSU Fball.

quadri moore lol.... thanks for having me! was fan of lance and kenyon.... you guys crushed me when a week after our (rutgers) biggest win ever (to me) against l'ville in 2006 we travel to cincy and lay an egg in a 30-11 loss.... we went from #15 to #7 for one week until being knocked back down #15 after losing to you guys.... we destroyed the cuse a week later and then ripped my heart out with a triple overtime loss to wvu.... we did smack kansas state around in our bowl game to finish #12 that year... but yeah... how i became a bearcat fan... quadri moore lol

Glad you joined the site, thanks for your insight! I was at the Rutgers game when we shocked you guys, that is one of my all-time favorite UC moments! You guys get the last laugh, however, as you are moving into a power 5 conference. As far as what made me become a fan, I have been a fan my whole life. The day I was born, UC hit a game-winning shot to beat Tulane. My dad still tells the story to this day, along with him staying up with me during the Great Alaska Shootout when I was 2 years old. My whole family went to UC, and I have gone to countless UC games in the past 18 years. I became a big time UC basketball fan after dealing with my Xavier friends (As I documented in my story:http://cincyontheprowl.com/2013/12/31/bearcats-tale-representing-c-enemy-territory/). As far as UC football goes, it was definitely the Rutgers game that made me turn into a big time football supporter. I am still narrowing down my college list, and I desperately want to go to UC, but my parents want me to look around a bit so that I can make sure UC is the best fit for me. I loved my campus visit and I want to take a couch from my dorm down to the 50 yard line of Nippert and take a picture with my friends with us in tuxedos like my tour guide did. I love that you can use the facilities as long as the teams aren't practicing, that is awesome! I don't know many other colleges where you can run around on the football field as long as the team isn't out there! UC is a great school that has vastly improved in the last 10 years, and I think that with our current leadership, it will continue to grow and become an even better school. Go 'Cats!

Man, I hope I didn't run over you when I rushed the field after that win!! :D Just kidding, welcome to Bearcat Nation, we all look forward to Quadri the next four years.

My story might be a little different but a little the same. I grew up a Reds fan. Baseball was my first love. As a neighborhood boy at 7 living in Newport that was all we did or cared about. I think that is what made me such a sports fan. My dad went to Auburn but wasn't really a sports fan, but he is a die-hard Auburn Tiger and I think I got my passion from him. My mom went to South Carolina, but it was never really an issue, but her dad and her would listen to Yankee games on the radio in the 50's together so she was a baseball fan. Being a sports minded kid and my mom liking basball she always encouraged me to be a sports fan and I would go to Reds games all the time when I could. I moved out of the area to Wisconsin for a year and a half but my loyalty stayed with the Reds. Luckily we moved back to Cincy in 1989. I first heard of/followed Bearcats basketball during the final four year. I was a typical kid who rooted for every team that was good and loved the local team. So UC became my favorite team even though I rooted for (hate to admit) X, UK, OSU, Duke, UNC, etc. The older I got the more I became a basketball fan and when I went to UC in the fall of 96 all of my philosophies changed. I was a Bearcat fan ONLY and being that my sports background is what it is and being able to go to all the games free I became a die-hard. I really do live and breathe UC sports. My whole schedule revolves around gametime and my mood even changes based on winning and losing, although the older I get (I'm 35 now) I'm better at dealing with losing. I'm just glad to be in a position now to be a season ticket holder to both football and basketball. Gamedays is what makes me both happy and a nervous wreck. Sad really I guess, but hey we all feel that way on here. So my story might be a little different as there was no one that brought me to UC sports or a defining moment that made me a Bearcat fan but I am here and loyal and proud to be a Bearcat!!

If you are looking to do engineering or DAAP I would definitely recommend UC. If you are looking at any other type of study I would recommend Ohio State. Decisively better in non-engineering degrees...

(assuming you are looking to stay in state)

Yup, I'm looking at poly sci and law school. Really, you can't go wrong with UC, NKU, or OSU for law school. I might do NKU undergrad and UC law or vice-versa. OSU does have a nice poly sci program, but it is huge! If you think UC is big, OSU is on a different level.

If you are set on going to law school, I would recommend studying Economics (if you are interested in it). That is why I'm studying and a lot of my fellow Econ majors are applying to law school.

Yeah, I'm thinking about double majoring or minoring, and Econ would definitely be my second choice. I took an intro class in it this year, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I argued with a kid in my class who is a self-proclaimed socialist and we had many good debates. Actually, he would correct me, he is a Leninist Bolshevik, lol! He is one of those people who is so smart that he has no common sense.

I went to OSU my freshman year and you are right. I felt more like a number there than at UC.

Funny story. My brother went to UC his freshman year and transferred to OSU. I went the following year and lived off campus since my brother was able to live off campus. I didn't go to the dorms so I didn't meet a lot of people and my hometown was so close I went home most weekends. I had good friends at UC so I decided to transfer. My brother stayed one more year at OSU and then transferred back to UC...one year prior to the final 4 run.

Smart moves huh:)

Wow, talk about not staying in one place for too long, haha! I think anywhere I go, what you put into it is what you get out of it. I'm definitely going to live on campus my first year so that I become a member of the community and get involved. It is very expensive and I hope to move off-campus after a year or two, but I do see the benefit in living on my own for a year. Hamburger helper every night, nom-nom, haha!
