Gates is my favorite Bearcat, has been since he arrived, but my question is will he ever be more than a 10 pt, 5 rebound, guy? Yancy should be getting 15 and 10. If isn't doing that against the competition we're playing now. He's not going to do it in Big East Play. He started out strong, but now is reverting back to his form of the last two seasons. I'm not dissing big Yance, I just think he can dominate, but isn't doing it for some reason.

I think he is more likely to be more productive numbers wise in BE play than against the cupcakes they are playing now. That's because BE teams are more likely to play him straight up rather than pack the defense in and collapse on him every time he touches the ball. Additionally he will be on the court for 30+ minutes per game, while he has been taken out midway in the first half, and plays minimally in the second half recently due to comfortable leads after halftime. He does however need to stay in the paint rather than taking 15-20 footers like he was yesterday.

Yancey will have some 20 and 10 games but they will be few and far apart.. He does not command the ball or position himself as good as a Danny Fortson or Jared Sullinger.. If you see him posting up it is always 10ft or farther from the basket. He has the power and agility to consistently position himself right under the basket but he does not. Until he starts getting better position all his points will be coming from mid range jumpers and garbage rebounds. There was a point yesterday in the game where he got the ball on the post and had a guy guarding him 1 on 1 about 5 to 7 ft from the basket, he looked to pass and until the whistle was blown he threw the ball in for an and 1. All he had to do was body the littler defender back and either dunk the heck out of it or have a easy layup. Yancey is a beast and will eventually be a Pro basketball player but for the people worried he will leave this year, dont worry he will be back unless he completely starts dominating like we all think he should. Other than that he has done a incredible job being more vocal and his stamina is the best ever.

I think he sat most of the second half Saturday as discipline. From Lance McAllisters Blog: Yancy Gates played just 5-minutes in the second half. Mick told Dan and Chuck that Yancy must learn that Mick coaches and Yancy plays. Mick added, "I'd like to play and have Yancy coach, but I don't think we'd win as many games."

I like this move if it is true, Mick needs to discipline more and let the players understand he is in control, not them. (glad it was a game where they could afford to have Yancy on the bench though as well.)

Yancy may be only getting 10 right now but he is responsible for a lot the offenses production. He requires a double team almost always. This is leaving people open for threes and now that we are hitting them our entire offense looks better.

I would simply like to see him realize he is 6'10" 260 lbs and not a small forward. He could average another 4-6 pts a game simply by being a better rebounder. He has power big man tools and tries to play a finesse game.

he does an extremely poor job of getting inside position on guys he is a lot bigger than, that is why he always takes finesse type shots.

I think it's a two fold thing. I agree he doesn't do a very good job of consistently establishing strong position when on the low block, but, over the past two years I'd also contend that our offense and guard play hasn't been very good at consistently getting him the ball when he's been open on the low block... hopefully all of that starts to develop and change as the season progresses. Even if Yancy just ups his potential to 15 and 10 we'd be looking at an All-Big East player- and that's not far off of what he's averaging right now (11 and 6 or 7 I believe).

I agree with that in previous years but the guards have been trying to give him the ball a lot this year and his positioning is still horrible.

Agreed.

Overall the offensive flow has been much smoother and crisper this year. I think Yancy just gets frustrated and settles too much. That's when we see him step out to just below the three point line and start heaving up those jumpers. I still haven't given up on him though... I'm interested to see what occurs once Big East play starts.

Right now Gates is shooting 43% from the floor. We have guys getting open looks at three that are shooting 55%, 43%, and 42%. Two more who are shooting over 37%.

If teams are packing it in on Gates...we need to keep unpacking it. Gates is 20% off of Fortson's best year of 62% FG%. Meanwhile Bishop is on pace to have a record % of threes made (.476) and two more guys would be top 5 if they finised today (#5 all time is .418).

I know I know...we won't finish with those %'s since we are probably getting easy open looks because of inferior talent. But...as long as we are canning threes at this pace there is no reason to force anything to Gates. Things will open up for Gates soon enough. All of these threes will benefit Gates. He needs to get over himself or start asserting himself a little more. If he were putting in 60% of his shots...we would find a way to get him the ball a bunch...just like we use to do with Fortson.

Bottom line...let Cronin do his coaching job. He's taking advantage of what is being given. Gates has yet to prove himself as an ustoppable force. I do appreciate his hard work in the off season and that will pay off. Hopefully our big man coach can prove his worth...because I haven't seen a lot of development in terms of Gates position and low post moves. That may be the biggest thing holding Gates back right now...why hasn't someone taught him how to play the post to the potential that his body is capable of? Mick isn't a big guy so IMO he needs to take a hard look at the big man coach and say...you aren't doing your job right now. I want Gates to dominate like we know he can...either fix that or we may have to bring in a new big man coach to get the job done.

I completely agree with you. For once :D

The guy is one of the biggest specimens in college backetball. Bring down the hoop, Please!

Have noticed he's added some nice post moves this year, but just not near as physical as he can be

If we could bottle his one play from last Saturday night vs. Utah Valley, I'd be extremely pleased. He got the ball behind the basket right by the baseline, took one extremely strong power dribble back out to the basket and went up STRONG above everyone else and finished with two hands for the and 1. It was an extremely impressive move, Utah Valley or other wise.

I like that he appears to be more thoughtful/patient inside the paint. Definitely is moving in the right direction..finally.

Yea, the fact that he shows it in spurts, means he is fully capable. He just has to bring it every game. That play was awesome. Reminded me of Hicks, except Gates is twice the size

I thought the entire basket was going to come tumbling down for a second, it was exceptional.

Reember as well that Yancy wasn't a post player in HS he was a jump shooter. He never really played the post there either, the coaches are working with him trying to make him a post player now. That's probably part of the reason he wasn't more highly recruited.

That's really an excellent point that I've never given much thought to. Good post.

I think Gates is a good mid range shooter. The problem is I think he is a little awkward with the ball. I don't mind seeing some fade aways from low post or even turn and shoot from high post...but his bread and butter should be backing them down and going up strong. It's been 3 years and his bread and butter is still going away from the bucket instead of towards it.

I think he's working on it but the progress seems painfully slow. I still think he is the most valuable player on the team though. I am not trying to rip on him. I just don't know how hard it is to coach a guy to back into someone and go up strong. It shouldn't take three years I can tell you that. IMO that's a big man coach problem...and a relatively big one.
