Yancy Gates.

I think Gates is a good mid range shooter. The problem is I think he is a little awkward with the ball. I don't mind seeing some fade aways from low post or even turn and shoot from high post...but his bread and butter should be backing them down and going up strong. It's been 3 years and his bread and butter is still going away from the bucket instead of towards it.

I think he's working on it but the progress seems painfully slow. I still think he is the most valuable player on the team though. I am not trying to rip on him. I just don't know how hard it is to coach a guy to back into someone and go up strong. It shouldn't take three years I can tell you that. IMO that's a big man coach problem...and a relatively big one.

You really don't think they coach him that? It's easy to coach that, it's hard to actually get the player to do it if he doesn't want to.

Exactly. The coaches can only do so much. It's ultimately up to Yancy to do the right things. He got in great shape this summer, that was step one. Now step two is consistently having it in his mind that he is going to be an unstoppable force down low. If he does that he will not be stopped.

Sure I think they are coaching that. I just don't know how well they are coaching it. If the player is not doing what the coaches are asking...then he sits until he does...plain and simple. We have had plenty of games to get that point across this year. We aren't deep at the big...but we are deep enough to beat the teams we have been playing without him if he's got his own individual game plan.

Now, if the player simply isn't capable of doing what the coaches are asking...that's a different story. But I don't think anyone in here thinks Gates is incapable of backing down a smaller man and going up strong.

I don't want to be overly critical of Gates or the coach...but this is what I would do. I see where Mick used the bench as motivation last game to let him know who was coach...Cronin or Gates. This is why I am expecting a season high for Gates tonight unless he's still in the dog house. Let's see what happens.

I think Coach Cronin was pretty upset with Yancy after last game. I didn't hear the post game comments, but that's what I was led to believe.

Hopefully we see some improvement tonight.

I watched the post game press conference and Mick addressed it briefly. He didn't seem mad or upset with Yancy. From the way he put it Yancy was more frustrated than anyone about not getting the ball down low. I think that's why we saw him force those shots from the perimeter and why Mick sat him for the majority of the second half. I expect to see a much different Yancy Gates tonight. In fact, I'm betting on a double/double. Anybody want to make a wager? :D

HAHA!

But, yea pick the pace up a little. He has gotten better. Just nowhere near the stereotypical 6/9, 270lb post player college basketball is used to seeing

Yancy's shot selection and desire to shoot from outside is his own issue. It all goes back to desire and understanding your strengths and weaknesses. He has tried to play a finesse game from day one and the staff has pulled their hair out trying to get him to play a power game. They even had him watch film of Dejaun Blair. I will never understand how some dont see that personal development is on a players shoulders. The staff points the direction and tells them how to get there. Whether they arrive or not is on them.

I don't know if they still do it...but I remember a time when I would hear of our coach having football dummy bags at BB practice and they would beat the livin shak out of our big men while the attempted to go up strong. Fouls were okay too...you had to make the basket.

If they are doing that kind of stuff I will say it's a player problem. If not...change the coaching style and get it done. It is possible to turn a somewhat passive player into somewhat of a beast. Use the bench...it's a powerful motivator.
