Clint talks about Kelly's departure.

Recently, Cincinnati’s football team lost it’s head hancho is Head Coach Brian Kelly. This, after leading the team to a 12-0 record, made many people angry. The team plays Florida in a huge BCS bowl game in a few weeks. While Kelly left for Notre Dame, the criticism came flying in from everywhere. The Cincinnati program decided to go out and hire Central Michigan’s Butch Jones as the new head coach for next season. Clint Shepherd is a great offensive lineman and will play for the Bearcats next season. In this exclusive interview, he talks about all things Cincinnati related including Butch Jones, Brian Kelly, his status at Cincy, and much more!!!

Why did you commit to Cincinnati for football? Well, the reason I committed to UC was because of, not just the coaching staff but also the entire university in my mind is top notch. I love the atmosphere of the school overall, and the atmosphere at games is amazing. It just seemed like the right “fit” for me.

What is your reaction to Brian Kelly leaving the team for Notre Dame? My reaction to him leaving… Well, I was honestly extremely disappointed. Not so much was it unexpected, but I was definitely disappointed. Ever since I committed in February, he and the coaching staff were pretty confident that they would be there at least until after I graduated. He and his family were happy there he told me. It was a bit shocking and disappointing just because I had really looked forward to playing for him and the staff, but now it is really starting to look like the coaching staff that I have built a close relationship with will be leaving, such as the Offensive Line Coach, Coach Jeff Quinn. He and I have developed a strong relationship and I really hope he gets the job there. I have a lot of respect for him.

What was your relationship like with Coach Kelly? With Coach Kelly, I really didn’t have an extremely personal relationship with him as I did with Coach Quinn. Kelly was definitely a huge part of the recruiting process and I did get to know him well, but Quinn was really the largest part of my commitment.

Will you still honor your pledge and play football for Cincinnati? As of this moment, I still plan on attending UC. I love the entire Bearcat community. But at the moment, I am still a little hesitant in saying it is a definite yes, but I am 99.999% sure. It would be 100% if Quinn got the head coach job. It’s been a little stressful lately with figuring out this whole situation. But that’s the animal called college football recruiting… Like today I had a coach from Wake Forest at my house visiting, as they are trying to recruit me in case I change my mind. It definitely interests me but at the moment I am just in a waiting game.

What are your goals for your time in college? Will we see you in the NFL? As for my goals… Well, my goal coming in to high school was just to start varsity some day, let alone play in college. I’m living a dream for a lot of kids that I am truly thankful for. But my goal is to come in and compete and help the team from day one. I want to fight my way up to a starting job, and I know I’m going to work as hard as I need to in order to get where I want. As far as the NFL? I’d have to pinch myself if that day comes… That is an absolute dream that I would love to come true. I’m going to work as hard as I can one day to make it there. I sure hope I’ll look back some day and realize how thankful I am to be at that level.

If you could tell or ask Coach Brian Kelly one thing right now, what would it be? Hmm… What would I tell Coach Kelly… Well, I would definitely tell him I am disappointed with his decision and I little bitter, but I understand he has to do what he has to do. But I also want to thank him for the opportunity he’s given me to play and also want him to know that I’m going to help lead this team to more success.

Do you enjoy being an offensive lineman? Is it rewarding to you? As a lineman, it is definitely a rewarding job personally. Most of the time, we don’t get credit we might want, but that’s when the RB and the coaches come up and give us a pat on the back because they know we are a critical part to success. However, we are also criticized if we are unsuccessful. It is definitely a rewarding job though, just because of how tight knitted the O-line is. I love my job in football… But as every lineman does I have dreams of scoring of course!

Where will Clint Shepherd be in five years? So, me in 5 years… Well, if I’m not entering the draft, hopefully I am helping to make a difference of some sort in the world. Whatever plans God gives me, I’ll follow them. In five years I just want to be the best I can possibly be at everything.

Cincinnati has named Central Michigan Head Coach Butch Jones as their Head Coach. What is your reaction to this? Will it hurt your chances of coming to Cincinnati? I haven’t gotten a chance to talk to the new coach, but I am looking forward to it here soon as I have been told he will be contacting me here soon. But it definitely is disappointing Quinn didn’t get the job, but I am still excited to be a Bearcat.

We want to thank Clint Shepherd for the interview and wish him the best of luck with the rest of high school.
