'10 TX PG Josh Watkins (Utah Verbal)

Help Support BearcatTalk:

We'll know more after Josh's scheduled visit this weekend. If he ca provide staedy ledership, I'm all for him coming. He is a tough New York kid and I think he'll add some of that too. He takes very good care of the ball. That killed this team last season, especially at the end of games.

A guy with great leadership skills would be a good get for the program in the long haul. But I think expecting him to step in and be a leader as a freshman...well, I think we've seen that it rarely happens unless that player is extremely special (ie. John Wall). But, it can only help.

I am very concerned how we are going to out score people next year though.

Josh is a juco.

JucoJunction is reporting the visit for this weekend:

"Could Cincinnati replace one New York City playground legend with another? After losing Lance Stephenson to the NBA Draft and Ricardo Ratliffe to Missouri, the Bearcats are on the trail for a late junior college signing. This weekend Cincinnati will host Howard College guard Josh Watkins."

I guess this is good news. I'm tired of getting my hopes up. I wish I could keep myself from looking at this stuff. Hope the visit goes well.

I watched him play in the NJCCA Championship. He reminds you in stature of Steve Logan. He didn't have a very good first half but got aggressive in the second half and ended up with 26 points. He's not fast, but has a very quick first step. He attacks the lane constantly. Not a great athlete, but solid. You can watch it on the link below. There are two different tabs for the game and overtime.

MVP of the National Juco Tournament.

From New York Wadleigh High. Averaged 14 points, five rebounds and four assists this year while leading Howard to the JUCO national title game win over Three Rivers. He outplayed Carter in that game to earn tourney MVP honors. Watkins has been talking with Cincinnati, West Virginia and Florida State, among others.

Watkins, who sparked the comeback in both the title game and the semifinal win over CEU, was named the tournament MVP. He tallied 26 points and seven rebounds in the title game and averaged 19.8 points over the tourney.

He visits Cincinnati this weekend.

He did visit and reportedly has spoke with his head coach about his options. He will most likely decide between the Bearcats and Utah Utes. Utah has another small guard coming in to visit and has more playing time to offer. I think there may be some hesitation about him playing in the BEast because the point guards are larger than the smaller conferences. This may be why Dilik has been brought in as well. He is 6'3" - 6'4" and reportedly good defensively.

Supposedly deciding very soon. Hopefully will hear something by tomorrow.

Why is it that recruits seem to think that playing time isn't available at UC?

Oh well, another one lost to a non BCS school. Not a good batting average for this signing period. 2011 is more critical then I even thought it was before. I hope some current players can step up and hold the fort while we wait for more talent to come.

I blame it all on Lumberjack. For his gross insensitivity and negativism.

But that's just me.

We aren't getting anybody we really wanted.

Im starting to get worried for Mick. I use to think he was a big time recuiter, but he hasn't landed any of the top guys we wanted in most years(other than Lance). If he can't recruit, he can't win, which means he will be gone sooner than later.

I personally don't think Mick was all that sold on this kid. Think about it. He is a PG which we really don't need. He isn't an explosive scorer, which we need. It wouldn't shock me one bit if his visit just went ok and they decided to go their separate ways. If Mick really wanted this kid and thought he was the best possible option, he would be putting the full court press on him and I would have to believe he would have committed to Mick and the Cats before he left. I don't think you can blame Mick on this one.

I have no inside info or anything like that, but I always thought this kid was kind of a last resort and really didn't take care of a need. We need a SG, not a PG. Unless Mick was absolutely blown away, I never thought he would be a Bearcat. Just my opinion.

I'm sure other coaches are recruiting against Mick, and not the school itself. At this point, who could argue (other than Ralph) that MC will definitely be at UC after next year? I applaud Thomas for keeping MC in place, and giving him 5 years to turn the hoops program around, but I wonder if by doing so, he hurt UC's chances of recruiting..

I think UC not making the NCAA Tourney has hurt recruiting as much if not more so than the question about Mick being here. MT can give his word to recruits that MC isn't going anywhere. MT nor MC can tell a recruit you will be playing for a National Championship because the Cats have not made the Tourney yet. I think Mick has 2 years. This year and next year. MT won't make a change with such a pivotal class of recruits coming up in 2011. He would have had to do it after this year to even have a chance. I think if Mick doesn't start landing some 2011 recruits and the team doesn't make the jump to the NCAA tourney, Mick could be in trouble.

Agreed 100 %. I dont think our staff was ever in love with this kid and we have cashmere and jaquon at the pg already. Never understood why we really recruited the guy.

I do want a SG though.
