Article on the Commit from Today's Enquirer:

Coyne commits to UC
Posted by mdyer March 30th, 2010, 8:20 am

Badin junior QB Patrick Coyne orally committed to UC on Monday night, becoming the first Cincinnati-area player to commit to the Bearcats from the 2011 class.

Coyne, who is 6 feet 2 and 225 pounds, also had offers that included West Virginia, Wisconsin, Illinois, Akron, Bowling Green, Boston College, Minnesota, Buffalo, Toledo and Ohio University.

“I think it is great to have Pat commit to Cincinnati,” Badin coach Bill Tenore said. “The University of Cincinnati has a great football program and to be able to play in front of a hometown crowd and family and friends will be great for Pat.”

Coyne threw for 1,642 yards and nine touchdowns for the Rams last season. He rushed for 491 yards and 11 touchdowns. He was first-team all-GCL Central.

“I expect Pat to have another great year,” Tenore said. “We have the potential here at Badin to have a real nice 2010 football season.”

All Great stuff. Good start to the 2011 class... who's next?

looks like I am a few hours late, Coyne is a great pickup. Local kid with some great D1 offers, he should be a good one.

I'm pleased. UC probably won't take any more, so he was smart in verballing sooner than later. The big need is the defensive front. I hope to see more offers coming out in the next two weeks with DL in the forefront.

BuckeyePlanet had some nice things to say about Patrick. He was a solid first verbal.

Was at the Elite 11 Camp in Columbus, OH this weekend. Here is one review of his performance.

Most physically gifted
Cincinnati verbal commitment Patrick Coyne (Huber Heights, Ohio/Wayne) may not have ideal measurables in terms of height, but he sure can make all the throws and possesses a quick and powerful delivery. He is a gunslinger who is a much better athlete than you might think. That's not exposed in this type of setting, but it sure is on film. Has very good bulk and is highly competitive. Right now he only knows one speed -- 100 mph. The ball jumps off his hand. However, he is also blessed with the ability to make any throw on the field with tremendous velocity and ball speed. He has good feet and his footwork and depth from center are still developing due to him playing exclusively out of the shotgun as a junior. As a senior he is expected to be under center far more often and this will enhance his feet, timing and anticipation when reading on the move. When he learns to change up ball speeds he could really have a terrific arsenal of throws at his disposal.

This is a really good read and is a good sign IMO for the future of Bearcat Football. Many of the ranking services use these camps as their primary basis for ranking players. We could see Coyne end up with a 4 or 5 star ranking if he gets the invite to California and performs well. This means quite a bit in terms of recruiting because high profile kids want to play with other high profile kids. In one of the paragraphs, Coyne talks about his relationship with Shaquille Washington (another player recruited by UC) and how he is pushing to try to get guys like Shaquille to UC. I hope he is successful on and off the field.

Not to dreg p bad memories from last year, but I hope Coyne does not pull an Alex Smith here. If you recall, not only was Smith committed to UC early on, he indicated he was going to lead all these other guys to UC. Last I checked Smith changed his mind like five times and didn't bring a soul over to UC.

The difference is the position they play. Smith was a TE which was not a very big part of the offense under Kelly. I was honestly shocked he even committed in the first place. I don't know Coyne personally but from everything I have read, he seems pretty happy with his choice and as a QB, why wouldn't you want to play for the Bearcats?

The success of UC qb's (even with Kelly's departure) is enough reason to give HS QB's reason to go to UC. Coming here is a great move, just ask the third string QB at USC who was beaten out by two freshmen last year. Bigger is not better, and the UC QB position is becoming pretty high profile.

Don't forget Butch Jones is no slouch when it comes to QBs either. LeFevor was an absolute stud at Central Michigan. It may be a different story if Butch Jones wasn't a known commodity.

I'm hoping in 6 months, BJ and Cincy are clicking on the field. If the offense is sharp, that would help bring in defensive players.

The Class of 2010 was one of the best of the decade in the Greater Cincinnati area. With such a large crop of talent graduating this May, we begin to look at what players will take over as the stars of the local high school gridiron next season with our series, Rising Stars.

Badin quarterback Patrick Coyne enters his senior year with world in his hands. The 6-foot-2, 230 pound signal-caller is surrounded with outstanding talent on the Rams’ roster as they are positioned for a deep playoff run.

To top it all off the youngster has already made his verbal commitment to play football for the University of Cincinnati starting in 2011.

Coyne ascended onto the national scene last spring when college recruiters took notice of his physical skills as he took home honors as the top underclass quarterback at a camp in Indianapolis. This all happened before he ever threw a pass in a varsity game.

His ensuing junior season saw him throw for 1,641 yards nine passing touchdowns while rushing for an additional 491 yards and 11 more scores on the ground. Not a bad varsity debut. Those numbers were good, but not good enough.

“I need to cut down on my (13) interceptions” said Coyne.

The classroom part of football and watching film is where he looks to hone his skills this off-season.

“I get to line up across from one of the best defense backs in the state, Jeff Smith, every day in practice,” Coyne suggested. “He’ll bring it. He’s the quickest player on the team.”

Badin made the playoffs a year ago, but were ousted in round one by eventual state runner-up Coldwater, 41-0. It was in this game that Coyne had a revelation about how good you have be at this level and the next after watching the Ball State-bound Keith Wenning shred the Rams’ defense for five touchdown passes in less than three quarters of football.

“I was impressed with how the quarterback and the team handled themselves in that situation (post-season football), they were very professional” stated the future Bearcat.

His desire and drive are what wills his effort. It isn’t all about Patrick Coyne though. He has a zest and a genuine passion about the players and people that are around him. He is constantly showering them with adjectives and accolades.

The power of the offense is what excites Coyne about his 2010 version of the Rams.

“David Korb is the best guy with the ball in his hands. Nate Snellgrove is a bruiser and Alex Rieman is our sparkplug, he’ll run over anything,” Coyne claimed. “Tyler Sanders is the best slot receiver in the league.”

The love doesn’t stop there. The University of Cincinnati and head coach Butch Jones brings a spirited tone to Coyne’s voice when he mentions them as well.

“Butch Jones is the best coach in the nation. He is the most charismatic coach, he has the WOW factor,” the senior-to-be added.
“We are going to win a national championship UC with him there.”

Coyne has been a fixture on the sidelines of the Bearcats’ spring practices. The coaches love him as he constantly dials potential recruits urging them to join him in Clifton. He has become the program’s biggest fan.

Even with all the unbridled enthusiasm that Coyne posses it is his hard work and ability to recognize the efforts of those alongside that will elevate his game to a new level in 2010 and beyond.

FINAL TAKE: The young man is a winner and gentleman whose best days are still ahead of him. The great news is that the journey is just beginning for Coyne. It is a trek that appears to be destined for greatness.

The more I read about this young man, the more I can't wait to see him in a Bearcat uniform. If he blows up and gets an invite to the Elite camp in California, it could be huge in us being able to land other big time prospects. This kid is doing his best to bring in more talent to UC and the bigger he gets, the more pull he has. This is an exciting time to be a Bearcat fan.
