Help Support BearcatTalk:

Based on the report that GreatOne posted the link to, I will move him to a verbal. I would still like to see something that confirms it though. I will look and see what I can find.

According the Plain Dealer article, Shaq should be making the announcement at high school as I type this.

This might not be the last guy from Maple Heights that comes to UC this season or the next. There is a lot of talent there (Maple Heights is like a Cleveland version of Winton Woods). What's more Washington might help us land some other talent in Cleveland as well. UC has alread offered a WR in the 2012 class from Garfield Heights, Jeremy Graves. . According to an article on Washington's Plain Dealer blog, I think we can pretty much pencil hiim in as well.

Saw that Shaq did a blog for Cleveland.com I can't imagine that they are incorrect.

I also question him being able to contribute immediately. I doubt that a HS QB won't need a year to develop receiving skills such as reading CBs, etc.

He is a great talent and am very excited to see him here. Coyne and 2 WRs so far look strong for our future.

I am guessing it will be at least two years before Washington has of contributing significantly. The position change will be big but a bigle hurdle will be the depth at WR. Keep in mind in 2011 he will be competing against Woods, Kenbrell Thompkins, Dyjuan Lewis, Anthony McClung, Montrel Robinson, Alex Chisum and Josh Jones (maybe, not what is going on with him). Granted not all of those guys will be playing the slot, but that is a lot of bodies to move past. It is possible that Shaq could contribute on special teams in 2011.

I could definitely see Shaq taking a redshirt year just to grow physically and learn the offense. The guy plays QB in high school and although he's looked great at all the camps playing WR I'm sure there is a ton he still needs to learn about playing the position. I could see him making an impact on special teams by his RS Frosh year or who knows he could be on the field by then. Anthony McClung is also a slot receiver who is supposed to have big time speed as well. Not sure that he has all the tools that Shaq has but I'm sure they will push each other. Glad to have Shaq in the fold, though!

Maple Heights WR Shaq Washington has orally committed to UC

Looks like we are starting to see some confirmation from AFTER his announcement. This is good. I look forward to watching him keep the UC Receivers among the best in the nation every year!

Nice! Good find!

Man, this class is really looking good. I love the way this coaching staff is putting this class together.

Coach Jones hasn't coached a game yet, but I am really liking what I am seeing from him so far. It keeps getting better.

You know, the weird thing for me is that I was never concerned about his ability to coach. I was always curious how he would be able to recruit. There is no doubt he could coach (just look at what he did at CMU) but I had no idea he was as good a recruiter as he seems to be early on here at UC. I think he is going to take UC to the next level just like he did at CMU. I think we win a BCS game under Coach Jones within 3 years max (hopefully this year).

I was just the opposite. Jones recruited pretty well at CMU. He has a lot of connections in Florida (he has family in Tampa and coached with the Buccaneers), New Jersey (he coached at Rutgers), Michigan (it goes without saying) and I think Bajakian has ties in Illinois. What's more, I know many in Ohio don't like the guy, but Jones is close to Rich Rodriguez. By comparison, Brian Kelly coached at the DII level for mos of his career and only spent three years at CMU. He did not have any connections.

My only concern with him, which remains to be unseen, is how he will call plays. The CMU folks biggest criticism of Jones was his tendancy to get conservative in big games. Certainly, this is a lot difference than what we are used to under Kelly who tended to forget we had a running back in key games (see UCONN 2008, Oklahoma 2008, Virginia Tech 2008, etc.).

Look at how well he recruited at CMU. Amazing some of the talent he got to go there. 7, 3 star kids in 2009 (I don't really look at 2010 since they had attrition when he left). He recruited better at CMU than UC did with Dantonio.

If we win another Big East title we arent going away anytime soon with the way Butch can recruit.

This year is so important on so many levels.

The only reason I questioned Butch's recruiting at all is that his best player (Dan LeFevor) was recruited by Kelly. He has shown he can coach programs to new heights after Kelly at CMU but I have been really impressed with his ability to land quality players in his first class at UC. Keep it up coach!

I had a good feeling about him, but I wasn't certain. Glad to have him aboard.
