Sounds like a good match. He probably would start next season for us. Add him and Yancy stays and we are very dangerous again next year. Good bench too. I would really like to get this one.

the only reason id think jackson might start rather than Jurick (if we get him) would be in order to press. jurick and gates would make it hard to press.

i wouldnt expect much out of gaines next year

I think it would be reasonable to expect Gaines to give you 10 minutes of solid defense and rebounding. He will have some games where he puts the ball in the hole but you will be relying on Gates offensively just like this year. Jackson might start to show some offense next year too.

Stats thru 1-7-2011:

PPG - 12.3
FG% - 67% (rounded)
Reb - 16 (rounded)
BPG - 10
APG - 5 (rounded)
TPG - 3

On the downside he has only hit 1-9 ft's. but 12.3 ppg, 16 rpg, and 10 blocks is a nice stat line! I'd take 7 ppg, 8 rpg, and 4 blocks next season and a 60% ft shooter.

I know juco guys aren't the smartest in the world, but how dumb do you need to be to not realize you need to hack-a-shaq this guy? How do you average numbers like that and only have shot 9 free throws on the year?

Offensively he must play away from the basket... to average a triple double pretty much is good at any level, juco or not.. He must have athleticism to block as many shots as he is... Him and Gates on the low block would probably be one of the most fierce in the Big East.

at least at Tennessee, he was very, very raw offensively. Could be why he doesn't get to the line much.

Junior college center Philip Jurick, a 6-foot 11 inch 265 pounder, received an offer from UTEP. He has offers from Cincinnati, Oklahoma, Southern Miss, UCF and West Virginia. He spent a redshirt season (2008-2009) at Tennessee before leaving for junior college. He’s was rated a four-star prospect by Rivals.com out of East Ridge High School.

Jurick can be a great addition to next year’s squad because he has great low-post moves and can score with either hand. Additionally, Jurick has a good frame, is not afraid of contact on the post and is an athletic big man that would fit into head coach Tim Floyd’s system.

Angel’s Angle: Jurick would be huge get, no pun intended, if UTEP could snag him. He’s rated in the Top 10 (8th) on JUCOJunction.com’s Top 150 JUCO players. But, it remains to be seen if there is any room to sign extra players. There doesn’t seem to be a lot of flexibility with scholarships next season, but it’s a little early to say everything will stay the same.

Can't say with 100% certainty this is accurate, but I'm hearing that Jurick's top 3 are Oklahoma, WVU, and UC. WVU has really made a push since mid-January with him. Imo this is a guy that would perfectly fill a need this team will have next season. He's a guy that can come in and play right away, rebound and block some shots. At a legit 6'11" and 275 lbs. he has Big East size as well. Clemson has also inserted themselves into the conversation.

Now, the story is different. Jurick is giving Bob Huggins and the Mountaineers a close look as West Virginia is among a list of offers from schools like Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Cincinnati, Southern Mississippi, “like all the SEC schools” and others. He will have two years of eligibility.

“There are a lot of schools that have offered,” said Jurick. “But I am really just looking at a few schools now. Tops on that list are Oklahoma, Mississippi State, Oklahoma State, Southern Miss, West Virginia and Cincinnati. There may also be a couple of other SEC schools in the mix but those are the main ones I am looking at.”

“I don’t really have a set time frame for a decision but I will probably do it in late April or so,” said Jurick. “I just want to go somewhere that I can fit in righy away. Since I have just two years left to play, I want to go to a program where I can get the most done and make a big impact right away.”

Phillip Jurick (6’10 245lbs) of Chattanooga State Community College is one of the most sought after post players still available in the 2011 JUCO class. Jurick was a rated as a top 100 player by ESPN and Rivals coming out of East Ridge HS (Chattanooga, TN). He chose to stay in state, and accepted an offer from Bruce Pearl and Tennessee. At UT he was red-shirted as a freshman and left after two semesters in Knoxville. Jurick resurfaced at Chattanooga State, playing the last two seasons for head coach Jay Price.

He has a large frame and is very athletic and skilled for his size, and has played so well that he has actually been offered again by Tennessee (Jurick turned down the offer from UT). Jurick is averaging and astounding 9.5 blocks per game, which is leading NJCAA D1. If he can stay on the straight and narrow he will get paid after two good years at the high major of his choice.

Like a lot of the available sophomores at the junior college level, Jurick will wait to take the majority of his visits after Chattanooga St. CC finishes their season. The lack of available post players in the 2011 class (high school and JUCO) has really made him a hot commodity of late. Jurick has picked up offers from West Virginia, Georgia, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Oklahoma and Oklahoma St. He also has heavy interest from UTEP, Cincinnati, Southern Miss, and other SEC schools. It’s hard to tell which way he is leaning at this point, but he seems high on West Virginia.

Please don't go to WVU, it would tick me off to see him playing there the next 2 years. This is the one I want. I just hope he can stay out of trouble.

Torn between God's Gift and him but if I had to choose today it'd be Jurick. Just think he adds things the team needs. Size, athleticism, shot blocking, rebounding and defense with a bit of an attitude.

I have to wonder if WVU's signing of Dominique Rutledge will now effect their pursuit of Philip Jurick.

The Mountaineers have already received a commitment from one JUCO player in forward Dominique Rutledge from Western Texas Community College, and Bob Huggins is after another big player in center Phillip Jurick from Chattanooga State Community College. The 6-foot-10 player originally signed and played his first year of collegiate ball at the University of Tennessee under head coach Bruce Pearl.

Jurick left the program because of his mother’s health and he wanted to be closer to home. He is originally from Chattanooga, Tennessee and went to East Ridge High School.

The native Tennessean is in his second season with the Tigers and redshirted in his only season at UT. He has two years of eligibility left and he has already gotten a few visits from WVU head coach Bob Huggins. The Mountaineer head coach even made a visit after WVU’s season-ending epic victory over Louisville.

“I talk to them about once a week,” said Jurick. “We talk about how I can fit in and how I’m a JUCO guy and how he’s always been a coach who recruits JUCO players and makes them successful.”

The Mountaineers have had their eye on Jurick for quite some time. West Virginia only has two experienced big men returning next season in Deniz Kilicli and Kevin Jones, but neither of them is as big as Jurick.

The 6-foot-10 prospect is receiving interest from almost every SEC school and major programs like Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and WVU. He has already visited Cincinnati, Oklahoma and Southern Miss. Jurick says he plans on visiting WVU when his college season is over.

Jurick is familiar with the West Virginia program. WVU recruited him in high school before he signed with the Volunteers.

“It’s kind of weird,” states Jurick. “After all of this time we’re kind of back on the same page; I’m just a few years older.”

Jurick likes the physical style of play that Huggins uses and knows the track record he has of putting players in the NBA. That’s something Jurick would like to do in the future.

“It’s coach Huggins. Just the name alone speaks for itself. It obvious the success that he’s had and just playing in the Big East,” said Jurick. “That’s a hard conference to play in and have all of that success.”

Since Huggins has taken over the Mountaineers he has put three players in the NBA, has gone to the NCAA Tournament each year he has been the head coach and made one trip to the Final Four. Jurick knows if he comes to West Virginia he will see results and understands the kind of success players can have under Huggins.

“Just how he coaches and stuff like that I’m sure if I went there he would get the most out of me,” said Jurick. “It’s just my decision from there.”
