There haven't been a lot of prospects in recent years that all three local schools - Louisville, Kentucky and Indiana - recruited hard.
But all three basketball programs want to try and land one of the top players in the Class of 2012 from the state of Indiana - Indianapolis North Central guard D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera.
IU and Louisville are among a host of schools that have offers Smith-Rivera a scholarship, including Xavier, Purdue, Tennessee and
Cincinnati. He's also getting interest from North Carolina, Villanova, Florida, Georgetown, Pittsburgh, Ohio State and Washington. He said he talks a lot with UK but doesn't have an offer - yet.
"Right now, I'm not sure about a time table," Smith-Rivera said. "I am just letting it hang out there now. It's a pretty tough decision and I want to take my time and make the right decision.
"There's a lot of pressure. So, I am going to take my time."
The 6-foot-3 combo guard did say at this point Xavier, Indiana and Kentucky are among the top three on his list of school.
"I think they all fit me pretty well," he said.
Smith-Rivera said he has always liked the Kentucky program and noted coach John Calipari's recent success with putting players into the pro ranks.
"I like Kentucky a lot," he said. "Their style of play and how they get up and down the floor and how coach Cal has sent a lot of players to the NBA. I like them a lot."
With Louisville, Smith-Rivera said his physical play could "fit in" there. He said he has been offered by U of L coach Rick Pitino.
"I like how hard they play," he said of the Cardinals. "Louisville is a pretty energetic defensive team all around and that's what I am looking for."
Smith-Rivera said he has built a "very good" relationship with Indiana coach Tom Crean and noted the Hoosiers' upgrade in practice facilities.
"Indiana, you see the support here," he said. "They are rebuilding the program but you see the fans are coming along with them."
Smith-Rivera is expected to make a visit with his family this weekend to St. Benedict's Prep School in New Jersey where former Indiana assistant coach Roshown McLeod is now the head coach. He's expected to make a decision on his senior year soon.
