Indiana coach Tom Crean and Louisville coach Rick Pitino were in attendance for the Wednesday's Ivy Tech Downtown Showdown at Conseco Fieldhouse. Crean was there for both North Central's 80-51 win over Brownsburg and Pike's 62-58 overtime win over Lawrence North, presumably to see both North Central sophomore D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera and Pike junior Marquis Teague. Louisville is also among the schools Teague is considering; he also has commitments from Lawrence North juniors Michael Chandler and Ryan Taylor.

D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera, North Central: The 6-3 sophomore was very active early, hitting a couple of jumpers in the lane in the first quarter. Brownsburg had a tough time stopping him around the basket, as he hit 5-for-6 from the free-throw line and finished with 16 points. Like Johnson, he didn't play much in the second half. He was 5-for-10 from the field.

How they fared: top players at State (3/28/10)

D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera, North Central: Warsaw had no one to match up with the 6-4 sophomore and he burned the Tigers for 16 points in the first half on 6-for-7 shooting. He didn't score the rest of the game, missing three shots, but it didn't matter at that point. The primary question about Smith-Rivera seems to be, 'With his body style, how much better can he get?" I understand it. He is physically mature for a sophomore. But that doesn't have to impede his development. He will become more of the primary option next year with Terone Johnson graduating. He has offers from Cincinnati, Indiana, Louisville, Purdue, Tennessee and Xavier.

The 6-4 Smith-Rivera has offers from Cincinnati, Indiana, Louisville, Purdue, Tennessee and Xavier. Tennessee coach Bruce Pearl was at North Central this week, Panthers coach Doug Mitchell said.

Playing AAU with a very good team (Indiana Elite). Made outside shots as well as going inside in helping his team when against the Illinois Wolves.

"One of the best games of the day came in the semi-finals of the 16-and under level where Ohio Basketball Club topped Indiana Elite. While OBC came out on top, it was D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera who stole the show with 28 points, almost all of them when his team needed him.

Smith-Rivera is a ball dominant combo guard who is a very good passer, but quite simply he is at his best going to the rim and getting buckets. There might not be a player at his age level who does a better job of getting to the foul line, and once he got there Smith-Rivera kept hitting one clutch free throw after another. Add in that he made threes, and the hard working Indianapolis native is beginning to prove some of the doubters wrong about his game."

Smith-Rivera has always benefited from being much stronger than his competition. However, the 6-foot-3 combo wasn't always in the best of shape. This spring, he looks much more lean and the result is a mean guard who can punish defenders physically. He shifts speeds with ease, has a crafty feel for the game and is a much better shooter from deep than he's been given credit for. Clearly, he's a high major prospect.

Joining Perea with a solid performance was D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera. The Indianapolis native continued his excellent spring with his play on Saturday. After struggling some with his outside shot at the beginning of the season, Smith-Rivera has caught fire from deep and is now a very reliable shooter. He is still at his best going to the rim using his power and great ability to change speeds, but now that the perimeter jumper keeps defenders honest he is even tougher to deal with.

Smith-Rivera, who has offers from Cincinnati, Indiana, Louisville, Purdue, Tennessee and Xavier, said he also may visit Oak Hill Academy in Virginia. He said he did not need prep school to gain college eligibility.
"But there wouldn't be too many distractions and I'd be able to focus on my grades," he said. "That would be the basis of it. But my family will look at what's best."

This young man gets in the lane and to the basket at will. He uses his strength very well. Needs to be a bit more consistent from the outside but he is a tremendous talent.

Not to be outdone by Harris was fellow Indianapolis 2012 wing D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera. Smith-Rivera scored 22 points in the championship game win for Indiana Elite. He battled through cramps to take over the game in the second half, and finished as usual around the rim with his strength and simply knack for scoring. The 22 point outburst closed out an excellent tournament for Smith-Rivera.

Word is Indianapolis North Central star sophomore D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera will be making a trip in June to visit Elizabeth (N.J.) St. Benedicts Prep School. Former Indiana University assistant coach Roshown McLeod is now the head coach at St. Benedicts. He said he could also visit Oak Hill Academy. Smith-Rivera is considered one of the top 2012 players in the Hoosier State. He lists Xavier, Indiana Cincinnati, Louisville, Kentucky, Purdue, Tennessee and Xavier as schools top on his list.

The Scout Says: “After struggling some with his outside shot at the beginning of the season, Smith-Rivera has caught fire from deep and is now a very reliable shooter. He is still at his best going to the rim using his power and great ability to change speeds, but now that the perimeter jumper keeps defenders honest he is even tougher to deal with.”

There haven't been a lot of prospects in recent years that all three local schools - Louisville, Kentucky and Indiana - recruited hard.

But all three basketball programs want to try and land one of the top players in the Class of 2012 from the state of Indiana - Indianapolis North Central guard D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera.

IU and Louisville are among a host of schools that have offers Smith-Rivera a scholarship, including Xavier, Purdue, Tennessee and Cincinnati. He's also getting interest from North Carolina, Villanova, Florida, Georgetown, Pittsburgh, Ohio State and Washington. He said he talks a lot with UK but doesn't have an offer - yet.

"Right now, I'm not sure about a time table," Smith-Rivera said. "I am just letting it hang out there now. It's a pretty tough decision and I want to take my time and make the right decision.

"There's a lot of pressure. So, I am going to take my time."

The 6-foot-3 combo guard did say at this point Xavier, Indiana and Kentucky are among the top three on his list of school.

"I think they all fit me pretty well," he said.

Smith-Rivera said he has always liked the Kentucky program and noted coach John Calipari's recent success with putting players into the pro ranks.

"I like Kentucky a lot," he said. "Their style of play and how they get up and down the floor and how coach Cal has sent a lot of players to the NBA. I like them a lot."

With Louisville, Smith-Rivera said his physical play could "fit in" there. He said he has been offered by U of L coach Rick Pitino.

"I like how hard they play," he said of the Cardinals. "Louisville is a pretty energetic defensive team all around and that's what I am looking for."

Smith-Rivera said he has built a "very good" relationship with Indiana coach Tom Crean and noted the Hoosiers' upgrade in practice facilities.

"Indiana, you see the support here," he said. "They are rebuilding the program but you see the fans are coming along with them."

Smith-Rivera is expected to make a visit with his family this weekend to St. Benedict's Prep School in New Jersey where former Indiana assistant coach Roshown McLeod is now the head coach. He's expected to make a decision on his senior year soon.

D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera and his family will visit St. Benedict's Preparatory School in Newark, N.J., this weekend, and a decision on his high school future will probably be made within a week.

Zoom D'Vantes Smith-Rivera, here driving to the basket in the Adidas May Classic in Bloomington, is arguably the state's top prospect in the 2012 class.

The 6-4 North Central standout, arguably the state's top prospect in the 2012 class, said last month he was exploring the possibility of playing the next two years at St. Benedict's, which is coached by former Indiana assistant Roshown McLeod.
