Semantics.

My question still stands. Why sign the other 2 with this kid still in play? Wondering if it was a a sure thing is better than a chance or if something else came into play?

I think it was the sure thing. And the 2 guards we got are pretty good. Why wait for better when you have pretty good. The other thing is, they will be sitting a year before they get much playing time with JDIII, Guyn, Sanders, S K, and Thomas getting all the playing time. It's not like we need an instant impact guard coming in.

maybe, just maybe, they had Caupin rated higher than Morris.

I'm thrilled about getting Johnson & Caupain and think it made Morris less of a priority and allowed Mick and staff to focus on trying to bring in some bigs.

Best of luck to Morris at ISU.

Yep, could be. That's why I'm asking. If anyone has heard specifically what they liked about those kids more than Morris. I'm not judging, just wondering what people have heard or their opinions.

Both 6"3', long arms, both great rebounders from the guard position, good kids/students, desire to be Bearcats, etc. No knock on Morris as I'm sure he's a great player and person.

The only opinions I care about recruits are Mick and the assistants.

Well good for you. I care about the opinions of some of the people here that follow recruiting closely as well.

And since you described each player the same way I would question why we need 2. ;)

This is purely a guess, but to me it seems Mick likes bigger, taller guards and guards that can score. Morris was more of a pure PG while Caupin is more of a scoring guard that was recruited to play point. And Caupin has a definite size advantage over Morris. I don't think Johnson really comes into play since he is a SG, but I do wonder if Mick would have taken Morris instead of Johnson if Morris was ready to commit. Personally I'm a big fan of pure PG's. Not necessarily ones that can't score, but ones that really know how to setup and run the offense. Hopefully Caupin learns that. I've never seen either play so obviously I'll trust Mick on this.

i would guess that coming off a year when he was unable to convince any high school kids to commit to UC that he wanted, he had a pool of 5 or 6 guards he liked and was going to take the first two that were willing to commit. i think if morris was willing to commit 4 weeks ago he would have filled one of the 2 slots available for true guards. coming off last year he wasn't really in a position to wait on kids when he had other targets willing to jump on board.

I agree but it's tough to say because we don't know how confident he was on Caupin. My guess is he was pretty confident about Caupin and Johnson but if he liked Morris enough he would have taken him. There were probably plenty of others that he was holding off on.

and take 3 combo guards? why would morris want to come here with 2 other guys playing the identical position.

Has nothing to do with not signing 2012 HS kids. That is recruiting period. You recruit multiple players and you offer who you think can fill that and sign the ones who commit. Yes, there are "targeted" players, absolutely. There are also players you stay in touch with just in case those targeted players don't sign.

2012 was not a deep class talent wise. 2013 is very deep with talent but not in elite talent. There are a lot of very good players. So all things being equal, and you can meet a need, you take the first commit and pt yor energy toward other players, other needs.

I was saying if Morris would have wanted to commit before Caupin and Johnson, then Cronin would have taken him.
