Reggie Cameron Player Diary Entry #5

Reggie Cameron '13 of Paterson Catholic (NJ) will be looking for a new high school next year, as PC is closing down. The talented young star checked in with a diary entry to update how things are going.

Wussup everybody its Reggie Cameron with another player entry. My last couple of weeks have been both very fun and very heartbreaking and tough. Around the first week in May my school, Paterson Catholic, held an emergency meeting to decide the future of the school. They came to the conclusion that the best thing to do was to close the school down after this year. My teammates and I were crushed as well as everybody else in the school along with the faculty and staff members.

Me and the rest of the returning players must find a new school to call home. My teammate Kyle Anderson has already made his choice and he will take his game to St. Anthony next year. Me and my other teammates Myles Mack, Kavon Stewart, and DeAndre Noble have yet to make a decision. [Note: Myles Mack has since announced that he will be going to St. Anthony's as well.] Starting the process of picking a school all over again is really hard. I think it's a harder decision to make then when I chose to come to PC. We all would like to stay together, but we are going to choose a school that us best for us.

My AAU season has been going well. Three weeks ago we went down to DC and competed in the DC Assult Classic. We lost in the championship to Baltimore Elite, who we had recently beaten once at the Spring Fling and once at Boo Williams. We didn't play our best game that game. Even though we lost, shoutout to my teammate Shacore Edwards on getting the Capital Hoops Dunk of the Week. Then we played in a tournament that we hosted at Kennedy High School in Paterson which was the Tune-Up. We won that chip by beating New Heights.

[Not long ago], we took a 5 hour plane ride to LA and played in the Compton Hoop Magic tournament while our 17s were playing in their EYBL. We went undefeated and won the chip and everyone gave a good performance on our team. The 17s went 4-1 and are at the top of the standings right now at 13-1. So it was a good weekend for the program. Before we left all of our teams spent about four hours at Venice Beach. It was really fun and a great experience.

Now its back to school and back to trying to find a new school. I'll keep you posted.

Hopefully this will be one of many kids from the northeast that Savino can bring in. Looks like he has a solid all around game and smart for his age. Also good length for being a freshman/sophomore.

Over the years the NJ Playaz AAU program has produced many talented basketball prospects. Jimmy Salmon’s program might have their next big-time prospect coming through the ranks in the form of Reggie Cameron, a Class of 2013 small forward.

Cameron has begun to earn a reputation as one of the top wing shooters in his class. The Hudson Catholic HS sophomore is a crafty player who uses his basketball intelligence to create openings to launch his smooth jumper against opponents. With his size (6-foot-7, 210-pounds), Cameron might be an ideal face-up four man right now, but he is continuing to work on his footwork and defense to transition to the small forward position in the future.

“As far as position, I think I can play the two to four,” said Cameron. “But I would consider my self as a small forward [as] my strengths are my abilty to shoot from NBA range and in. Also using my length to my advantedge and being a smart player with an high IQ.”

Playing with the high-profile NJ Playaz program will put Cameron in front of many scouts and college coaches in the coming years. it will also give him the opportunity to play with and against elite competition in order to help his all around game grown and evolve. He is very much looking forward to playing on the AAU circuit with the Playaz in the coming years.

“The best part of being in the Playaz organization is that we go to all of the big time tournaments and winning them,” said Cameron. “Also, just being part of the Playaz family and in the future I look forward to competing against all of the best teams in my class and accepting all of the challenges that come with that.”

Previously Cameron attended Paterson (NJ) Catholic High School, but the well-known school had to close it’s doors this summer. Many top basketball prospects were forced to find new schools this year and Cameron and another member of the Playaz family will team up together for coach Nick Mariniello and hope to return Hudson Catholic to past glory.

“I chose Hudson Catholic because I thought it would be the best fit for me,” Camron told NBE. “Also I wanted to stay at the same school as my Playaz teammate and my point guard Kavon Stewart.”

Camron is expecting big things right away for his new team.

“This year at Hudson I’m looking forward to competing and winning,” he said. “We have a really young but good team and should be a favorite for the county championsip.”

Playing with the Playaz and also with his talented teammate Stewart at Hudson Catholic has brought some early recruiting attention for Cameron as he already is collecting scholarship offers from Big East programs and other schools are taking notice.

“I have received offers from Rutgers, DePaul, Cincinnati, Seton Hall and Providence,” said Cameron. “I also have interest from UMass, Villanova, Xavier and Rice.”

Cameron also profiles himself as a college basketball fan, trying to watch any game he possibly can on TV when he has the chance. He pays especially close attention to three conferences that he hopes to play in some day as well.

“When I watch college baskebtall I like to watch the Big East, ACC and Big Ten mostly because those are the conferences I really wish to play in,” Cameron said. “But I watch any college game when I can.”

Pretty soon there is a good chance college basketball fans will be tuning in to watch Reggie Cameron in action in their favorite conference in the future. The Class of 2013 prospect to watch is certainly headed in that direction.

Visited Villanova for Midnight Madness.

The 6-foot-7, 210-lb previously updated NBE on his recruiting situation as the process is just getting underway for the Class of 2013 prospect.

“I have received offers from Rutgers, DePaul, Cincinnati, Seton Hall and Providence,” Cameron told NBE earlier this month. “I also have interest from UMass, Villanova, Xavier and Rice.”

Jay Wright and the ‘Nova basketball community gave Reggie Cameron a night to remember last Friday and made a lasting impression on many top recruits in the classes of 2013 and 2012.

Reggie is a pure shooter with a scorers mentallity. He never stops looking for his shot. He can get to the basket and has good court vision when passing. He is not overly quick and it's going to be interesting to see how his body develops over the next couple years. He isn't a great defender and does not have quick feet. Getting in better physical condition and becoming more lean could help. However, he is a legit knock down shooter and whether he grows into a face up four man, or a wing weapon at the next level will be interesting to see.

Seton Hall, Rutgers & Cincinnati all here at the #HGTipOff watching Reggie Cameron & Kavon Stewart of Hudson Catholic.

Built to be a trailing four man in a four out/one in system, Cameron is a dangerous long range shooter from on top. He doesn't make plays in traffic like his teammate Young does, but Cameron has good hands and will make more plays in traffic as he gets stronger.

Reggie Cameron has his eyes on the ACC. Both Maryland and Virginia have offered as have St. John's, Rutgers and Seton Hall.

Combo forward Reggie Cameron one of the top class of 2013 prospects in the state of New Jersey.

The 6-foot-7, 217-pounder from Hudson Catholic already has a host of colleges on his trail and has garnered a handful of scholarship offers.

To date, Cameron lists offers from Seton Hall, Rutgers, Cincinnati, UMass, Providence, and DePaul. In addition, schools such as Virginia, Oregon State, Xavier, and Villanova are amongst those expressing interest in him.

Although Cameron was unsure if St. John's involved in his recruitment, he did say that he would "definitely" be interested in the Red Storm.

2013 Prospect: Reggie Cameron
by Alex Schwartz

A 6-foot-7, 215-pound combo forward who can play inside and out, Reggie Cameron is one of the more versatile players in the Northeast in the class of 2013. Cameron, a star at Hudson Catholic (NJ), was in attendance at the Rumble in the Bronx this past weekend with the Playaz U16 squad and took the time to speak with VUSports.com on Sunday afternoon.

Cameron said that he has scholarship offers from seven programs at this point: Rutgers, Seton Hall, Cincinnati, DePaul, Providence, UMass, and Xavier. In addition, he noted that Florida, Villanova and Virginia have expressed interest.

The Garden State standout claims no favorite right now. Seton Hall, Rutgers and Villanova (for last year's Midnight Madness) are the only colleges that Cameron said he has made unofficial visits to.

Tennessee just spoke with 2013 forward Reggie Cameron of the NJ Playaz. The Vols are the latest school to get involved.

Reggie Cameron (Hudson Catholic HS/NJ Playaz)

The smooth 6-foot-5 pure shooter continues to pile up recruiting interest along with some impressive offers.

“I’ve just recently picked up some interst from Tennessee, Florida, Notre Dame, West Virginia and Marquette…and Pitt,” said Cameron. “And I’ve recently picked up offers from Villanova, Cincinnati, Seton Hall, Rutgers, and Providence, DePaul, Xavier and Northwestern.”

Although only in the Class of 2013 and a ways from scheduling official visits, one school stands out and he would definitely like to eventually make it one of his five official visits.

Villanova is a great school. It is about an hour and a half from my house,” said Cameron.
