Over the years the NJ Playaz AAU program has produced many talented basketball prospects. Jimmy Salmon’s program might have their next big-time prospect coming through the ranks in the form of Reggie Cameron, a Class of 2013 small forward.
Cameron has begun to earn a reputation as one of the top wing shooters in his class. The Hudson Catholic HS sophomore is a crafty player who uses his basketball intelligence to create openings to launch his smooth jumper against opponents. With his size (6-foot-7, 210-pounds), Cameron might be an ideal face-up four man right now, but he is continuing to work on his footwork and defense to transition to the small forward position in the future.
“As far as position, I think I can play the two to four,” said Cameron. “But I would consider my self as a small forward [as] my strengths are my abilty to shoot from NBA range and in. Also using my length to my advantedge and being a smart player with an high IQ.”
Playing with the high-profile NJ Playaz program will put Cameron in front of many scouts and college coaches in the coming years. it will also give him the opportunity to play with and against elite competition in order to help his all around game grown and evolve. He is very much looking forward to playing on the AAU circuit with the Playaz in the coming years.
“The best part of being in the Playaz organization is that we go to all of the big time tournaments and winning them,” said Cameron. “Also, just being part of the Playaz family and in the future I look forward to competing against all of the best teams in my class and accepting all of the challenges that come with that.”
Previously Cameron attended Paterson (NJ) Catholic High School, but the well-known school had to close it’s doors this summer. Many top basketball prospects were forced to find new schools this year and Cameron and another member of the Playaz family will team up together for coach Nick Mariniello and hope to return Hudson Catholic to past glory.
“I chose Hudson Catholic because I thought it would be the best fit for me,” Camron told NBE. “Also I wanted to stay at the same school as my Playaz teammate and my point guard Kavon Stewart.”
Camron is expecting big things right away for his new team.
“This year at Hudson I’m looking forward to competing and winning,” he said. “We have a really young but good team and should be a favorite for the county championsip.”
Playing with the Playaz and also with his talented teammate Stewart at Hudson Catholic has brought some early recruiting attention for Cameron as he already is collecting scholarship offers from Big East programs and other schools are taking notice.
“I have received offers from Rutgers, DePaul, Cincinnati, Seton Hall and Providence,” said Cameron. “I also have interest from UMass, Villanova, Xavier and Rice.”
Cameron also profiles himself as a college basketball fan, trying to watch any game he possibly can on TV when he has the chance. He pays especially close attention to three conferences that he hopes to play in some day as well.
“When I watch college baskebtall I like to watch the Big East, ACC and Big Ten mostly because those are the conferences I really wish to play in,” Cameron said. “But I watch any college game when I can.”
Pretty soon there is a good chance college basketball fans will be tuning in to watch Reggie Cameron in action in their favorite conference in the future. The Class of 2013 prospect to watch is certainly headed in that direction.
