Nigel Hayes, Whitmer

A combination of solid post moves, inside scoring touch, ability to draw contact, good vision in transition and the knack to knock down free throws and the occasional 3-pointer, Hayes appears to be a lock for big-time college basketball by 2013. Add to that his ability in the classroom, where he carries a 4.0 grade-point average thus far, and his attractiveness increases.

Power forward
Toledo, Ohio
Whitmer
AAU: All-Ohio Red
Ht:6'7"
Wt:200 lbs
Class:2013

Other schools of interest are currently Dayton, OSU, and Xavier.

Joining Tucker was frontcourt mates Nigel Hayes and Marc Loving. Hayes is a bruising power forward who is trying to get more skilled, but his combination of strength and athleticism is nearly unmatched at the 15-and under level. Loving is a skilled small forward who can really shoot it, and also is capable of scoring off the dribble. The two of them put points up all weekend, and had a huge part in the run to the title.

His older brother is a defensive end commitment to Ohio State, and look for the younger Hayes to be recruited at the high-major level before it is all said and done. At 6-foot-6 and 205 pounds, Hayes is a specimen for a young prospect, and he is coming into his own. Hayes plays with a high motor all the time, and simply knows how to score around the rim. The athleticism is coming, and with more strength he could be very tough to deal with down low. Right now everything is with his right hand, so developing an adequate off hand is going to be important, but for a young interior player Hayes showed very well for himself.

Nigel Hayes (Toledo, Ohio/Whitmer)
2013, PF/SF, 6-foot-7, 210 pounds | Team: All Ohio Red
College: Undecided
He is a skilled power forward who is slowly trying to make the transition to the wing. He is able to operate a lot more on the perimeter for his high school team, where he even leads the break at times. However, he plays mostly inside for his All Ohio travel team. Hayes has a very good game in the paint with excellent hands and nice footwork. He has good back-to-the-basket moves, can score well in the paint and has an improving 17-foot jump shot. He is also a good defender who can step out and defend in space.

Nigel Hayes looks the part of a big-time player. He has a strong, sturdy build and long arms. Hayes does a good job of blocking shots and is solid at the defensive end. He is a superb athlete capable of highlight reel dunks. However, he is not great offensively and does not seem to have much of a jumper as he is working on transitioning to the wing, but has time to develop.

Hayes, a 6-foot-6 forward out of Toledo’s Whitmer HS, is a Class of 2013 prospect with offers from Toledo, Xavier, Central Michigan, Dayton, Cincinnati, and Akron as well as interest from Memphis, Ohio State and others.

Xavier is the school recruiting him the hardest and the only one he has visited. He has no trips planned.

On whether he has a favorite: “No, not really, or Ohio State and Xavier.”

Hayes’ brother is an incoming freshman football player at Ohio State and although he too plays football, he said he will definitely be playing basketball in college.

Of a commitment timetable: “It’s still out there, I’m just trying–that’s a later time.”
