Thats what I was trying to say about Lawrence...he still came here regardless so Mick is doing something. But we've all talk about this before...if T.V. = MONEY = FACILITIES = RECRUITS = BRAND = FANBASE = better recruits/nba players.... then we are def behind the 8 ball. Not all P5 schools are better but they all have a better income to work with.

The conference realignment doesn't really hurt basketball to be honest. In fact, it could help long term. If the power 5 conferences break away, that will only be for football. Basketball won't be changed. The NCAA Tourney makes a lot of money and part of that is the cinderella aspect. They don't want to lose that.

The reason this conference could help UC in the long term is that UC has a chance to make the tourney every year with a really good record and a high seed like in the CUSA days. That will help recruiting. There are still enough good teams and good games in the conference but it won't be the grind that the Big East was every game. I would love to be in a conference like the ACC but I think the American can benefit UC Basketball. Football, on the other hand, really needs to be a part of that top division (should the power 5 break away). It could be possible, I guess, for UC to be in two different conferences should the power 5 break away. They could be absorbed by a Big 12, lets say, for football only. I think that is unlikely, but still a possibility that really hasn't been discussed.

In a way...this could just be my take on it. But does anyone think the power conferences in a way could hurt some schools for basketball? I want to say football too, but money plays a bigger factor and that will always be the argument. But take a school like West Virginia. What is the closest league game for them? Do you think this could play a negative factor when it comes to recruiting?

I don't know that it necessarily has a negative factor to recruiting because it is not something most kids really focus on. Plus, they can say things like, "We get to play Kansas and Texas" which has some pull. Where it could hurt is that they don't have a rival. There's always a different buzz in the building when you are playing a rival and that might be lost on recruits visiting. I think what hurts West Virginia more than anything is that they are located in West Virginia! There is nothing in Morgantown or any other part of West Virginia for that matter.

More highlights from his HS days, he looks pretty good:[ame]http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=X9ILMQt6yfc[/ame]

Highlights like this are pretty worthless because you can't tell how good the competition is. He looks like he plays below the rim, which is fine, but he also didn't look 6'10" in that video. Maybe he has grown more since that video. Let's hope. One thing I did like was his willingness to kick the ball out and re-post. We haven't had a big that was willing to do that in a while. Of course, you have to have guards willing to give him the time to do that too. We'll see what he looks like when he gets here. At that point, I'll make my judgement.

I agree, but we have so many on this board who like to write off kids because they aren't big names or targets we have been known to be pursuing, so I just wanted to make a point that just because we haven't heard of him doesn't mean he is bad. Like you said, can't tell much either way with highlights. I will reserve judgement until we see him play live and I hope he becomes a serviceable big. Hopefully he puts up big numbers at his new school and turns some heads.

I'd take Yancy's stat line from a big any day of the week.

Indeed. Added production inside would be a definite bonus. I feel Mbodj was just getting there but Yancy came in with those skills. If the guy can add points, play defense and take up significant space, take him.

Brad Winton ‏@JucoRecruiting: Looking over some notes from Dallas JC Jamboree. Cincinnati is getting a good one in Coreontae Deberry from Hutch. Huge frame, has improved

He clearly has the body and skills, but motor looks like it will be the question with him, at least according to what I've read. Motor is much easier to fix than trying to teach a 7'1 African national how to play a game he has barely played in 2 years. I like how he asserts himself in the post and is willing to re-post if nothing is there. He and Strickland both have potential to give us a legit 5.

any updates on how Deberry has been doing so far this season? I dont know where to look

http://cms.hutchcc.edu/athletics-ftp/basketballmen/2010-11 stats/Men's BKB Cumulative.html

Those are his team's stats. Looks like he's putting up 7.25 ppg and 2.5 rebounds in a little under 15 minutes per game. Nothing earth-shattering, but he has hit 9 of 10 free throws so far, so that's good. Hutchinson is an elite JC program, but I hope he puts up some numbers before the end of the season. Regardless of how good of a JC program they are, they still face lesser competition by far than we do.

It's all about how many touches he sees. As was said above he plays at an elite juco so there are going to be a lot of guards that take a lot of shots. He has only attempted 14 shots and has made 10 of them. Is not going to put up earth shattering numbers on that team.

Kadeem Allen (Arizona recruit) is the PG for Hutchinson so I doubt there are enough basketballs on that team to let others score besides him. Per the link above, he's averaging 28.6 pts/game. Berry's #'s are productive for only playing about 15 min/game. I'm excited to have his size on our team next year.

If Coreontae DeBerry can bottle up the last minute from last night and replicate that, he would be the nation's best post player.

Coreontae DeBerry sounds like a synonym for Yancy Gates. If only he could put it all together.....
