If you look at his minutes per game after 1/1/14-20 games, 7 of those games he was in double digits in minutes after averaging double figure minutes in almost every game until then. 5 of those 7 games are against Rutgers (2X) and UCF (3X). Once the meat of our schedule hit and we were playing top division opponents, his minutes dropped big time.

He was a freshman in conference play behind a 1st team AA. Kevin Johnson will not redshirt as a sophomore if healthy. 0%.

I'm just not that high on KJ never have been I def think he's 2nd string right now behind Cobb and if we get Mason the KJ goes to third string. Maybe when he's a jr or sr but he isn't going to be in top 3 in scoring this year.

41% 3s last 27 games, 87% FT on the year, 3rd on team in points per min behind senior captains, plus defender, in limited minutes as a frosh...what dont you like about him?

When he gets a look and gets into his jumper, he is right on the money every single time. Best natural shooting stroke of any Mick player. He is going to be elevating and canning jumpers off the catch or the bounce from all over the floor for the next 3 years imo.

I wasn't big on KJ early in the season when he was playing poorly, but he really improved as the year went on. I don't see him redshirting even if we do bring in someone like Mason. The reference to Mick regretting not redshirting JaQuon Parker as a sophomore is fair, but I think KJ is more ready to contribute than Parker was at that point in their careers.

There are too many questions to answer on this roster to redshirt anyone for non-medical reasons IMO. The only exception to that would be if Moore or Clark are not even close to being ready to contribute, which I don't think will be the case. Everyone on the roster will have their chance to earn playing time.

You are missing the point. If Mick did say numerous times he wanted to get KJ more minutes he obviously didn't feel comfortable giving him those minutes in important conference games.

I don't get trying to predict if/who will get redshirted, it will all work itself out. Injuries, clearinghouse, transfers all can be unpredictable. I am sure Mick he is happy he has a full roster so he has some backup plans if something happens like last year with Strickland not being able to practice or play and Mormon getting hurt and JD3 having a family tragedy.

Yes looks bleak that KJ will redshirt right now, injuries/additions to team will also have a say in what happens.

Remember Jaquon also did move up a class and graduated early. He was Mr. Basketball in Virginia if I am not mistaken. That team was also completely different that this seasons team of predominantly newcomers.

You keep talking about his minutes as if they exist in a vacuum. They don't.

Against better teams you typically play your best players more.

What happens when you give someone more minutes? Someone else gets less.

His minutes dropping against better teams has much more to do with the fact that we had a 1st team AA playing the same position than it does with whether Mick felt like he could handle playing against those teams.

No dude, I'm not missing the point. He played 11 minutes per game again last 4 games...3 were conference and 3 were win or go home. Seems like Mick was pretty comfortable doing that, too. As was KJ, who shot 6-10 on 3 for 5.5 ppg. And what do you mean "if Mick did say numerous times"? There is no "if" about it. Try watching a press conference, interview during the week, listening to a radio show, or reading an article once in a while. You might learn something about the program...like, that there is no way in hell any conversation about KJ redshirt soph season is even a remote possibility if he isnt hurt.

Mick spent the whole year last year talking about wishing KJ got more minutes. That was with SK. And now a year later as a soph with SK gone, some of you are saying Mick's convo with Johnson will be about sitting out even though healthy bc he is possibly 3rd string and there are no minutes?
Were just speculating on line ups. We don't need 6 guards for one season. Just not enough minutes to go around, not to mention that Sanders and Shaq could handle ball also. If not KJ then somebody is going to redshirt if we land Mason.

If we get Mason who redshirts? Sanders, guyn, Shaq, Cobb, kj, caupain?

I know there isn't much to discuss right now, but I hate speculating who will redshirt when it's only May. Can we let the kids go through summer workouts, the Bahamas trip, preseason practices, and exhibition games before we start this conversation? Or at least wait till we land Mason or another wing? Or at least start a separate thread for this discussion?

None of us know how everyone will progress this summer, especially when there's still 4 months or so till practice starts.

Thread is SPRING RECRUITING, basically open thread right now about ALL recruiting topics. Like you mentioned workouts, practices, players haven't even arrived yet. So what else you want us to talk about? Should we shut this board down after spring signing period? Discussing roster is all us DIE HARD fans have to talk about at the moment.

Just to be clear, do you think we should redshirt KJ?

I had said early looking at every angel, I am not just looking at next year but next three or four years. I am very pumped up about Johnson at some point he will be great for us there is no argument. But if redshirting him one year helps him and we can get better play his 5th year then this year and can bring somebody in for one year, all for it. GO BEARCATS!!!

I don't like the answer he gave. I would rather him just say he wants to go to a bigger program to give himself the best chance to play in the NBA. He averaged 37.6 minutes per game and 18.5 shot attempts last season. It's not like Niagara is going to put him on the bench, so complaining about your role next season in terms of minutes and shots sounds kind of silly.

I would love to have a player who can score like he can on our roster, and I do believe there will be plenty of minutes available to showcase his skills for NBA scouts. But he's not going to average 35 minutes + at Cincinnati.

Yeah, and when you are away for a while to come back to a lot of posts in the RECRUITING thread, you think there might be some actual news - not people talking about redshirts and next year's lineups. I thought that was the whole reason to have two separate sections - one for basketball discussion, one for recruiting discussion.

It's not that big of a deal, but I'm sure I'm not the only one that gets aggravated time and time again.

Agreed. I don't think he wants to play at a big-time program. If he wants to "showcase his talents" and isn't worried about winning, he's better off playing for a lower-level team in a good conference, i.e. Georgia Tech.

He'll play 35minutes in games that count if he's the real deal. He should be smart enough to understand he's not playing 35minutes every game on a top team in country unless he go to another mid major.

If Johnson is a healthy redshirt this year, I will never post again.
Jacob, KJ isn't red shirting this year unless he is injured. He is going to be a big part of the rotation this year. Count on it. Him and TC will both get big minutes. The player on this team who should be concerned about minutes is Shaq. He doesn't board, his defense is spotty, his handles are average. Other then a occasional highlight play he is very inconsistent. If he hasn't worked on his game or taken his physical development seriously he will be pushed for court time.
