I always said if you give mick 5 out of shape posters from this board he could turn us into a top 20 defense by years end.

That’s a team that has no elite wing defender. It has no 6’11 shot blocker.

UCLA scored .86 ppp against the number 9 offense in the country and won.

That’s toughness. That’s defense.

That’s the anti John Brannen and it’s in the final four.

They also had to score 1.20 ppp to win a first four game and 1.11 ppp against the #3 defense in the country. It takes a complete team to get that far in the tournament.

That's a team with good players and a good coach it's in the final four.

Juzang has to be raising his draft stock tremendously. Average 21.6 shooting 44.7% and 35.3 from 3. Not a bad stat line

I’m going good players and a great coach

Mick is a great coach, not just good. His roster is good but by UCLA standards it’s actually one of the worst and least athletic. These last 2 seasons are the first time in UCLA history for them to not have a McDonalds all American on the team.

Imagine when mick adds a top 10 wing next year and top 50
Guard

Mick best defense coordinator probably on any level of basketball. Give him 24hrs and he takes away what team being doing good for years. Brannen should’ve joined his staff to learn few tricks

Bro every player on their roster top 100. Might not have boba fide lottery picks but they loaded with talent more than any other team in final four

Watching Johnny Juzhang talk about UCLA and the staff and the players.

John brannen should be watching and taking notes

You can use whatever complimentary adjective you want for Mick. He's doing an excellent job.

My point, as usual, is that he's not just winning with his style of toughness and defense that he had at UC. He now has much better scorers. In this tournament run they are averaging a 119 adjusted offensive efficiency, even with the 97.5 dud tonight (before tonight it was a whopping 124). His best offensive team here was 2017 when we had a 115 offensive efficiency. In our sweet sixteen year it was 110.

I'm happy for Mick, and I knew when he left he'd have success because he's a great coach and he'd get better players at UCLA. There's no need to measure our program or coaches against what Mick is doing there. It's a different situation.

They have zero 5 stars. It’s talented but like I said it’s uncharacteristically untalented when compared to the UCLA standard.

UCLA was excellent in 5 min of overtime against Alabama. But in 40 min, the game was tied at 65.. the over time period and the Bama continuing to foul drive the score way up and the ppp.

I think UCLA scored just 27 in the 2nd half.

But I do agree that learning to win in multiple ways in the best approach and having great iso shot makers. But mick having toughness & defense in his back pocket means you can win games even when the shots don’t go in

How many games has mick won us where we shot under 40% ? A lot. I want a coach who has defense to fall back on when the shots don’t fall

I don't know how many possessions were in the first 40 minutes, so it's hard to say what the ppp was. I'd guess it was still more than 1.0, which is impressive against the #3 defense. Compare that to our 2015 loss to UK where we scored 0.82 ppp. UCLA still won the game with offense in overtime. They scored 12 points in 3:30 to take a 7 point lead before the fouling started.

The other part of having better players is the defense shows up against top offenses. In most of our tournament losses the defense is what let us down: Iowa (1.18 ppp), Nevada (1.17), UCLA (1.25), St Joes (1.27), Ohio St (1.18), UConn (1.16). In this run, UCLA hasn't given up more than 1.12 in any game, and their last three games have all been 0.98 or lower.

Gonzaga and their four potential first-round picks just called... they say you're not giving Mick credit where credit is due.

They have 8 4 stars on their current roster. I know you want to push this narrative that they aren’t talented but that’s like having 8 jarrons on their team.

I give mick credit. He won. I’m happy for him. He left this program in a better spot and he went to where he could get a roster that includes 8 4 stars. That wasn’t happening here.
