B10 to meet tomorrow to discuss expansion

Hold the phone folks, there appears to be a new development on the expansion rumors.

Word is now the PAC 10 has sent an invite to Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Colorado. This comes on the heels of the Chancellor at Cal saying the other day that the P10 is going to overturn the landscape of college football.

That's a LONG way to travel for sports other than football. So much for taking the ol bus.

It wouldn't be too bad. They would primarily be playing teams they already play except for one or two exceptions. The divisions would work as follows:

Texas
A&M
Tech
OK
OK State
Colorado
AZ
AZ State

USC
UCLA
Cal
Stanford
Oregon
Oregon St
Washington
Washington State

That's if everyone agrees to it. Why would Texas join the pac 10 instead of going with the more lucrative big10? Aside from OK, they are the only big name in the group. Sounds like desperation moreso than a wise business move.

If that's true, Arizona and Arizona State have to be pissing their pants with fear. They'll win 3-4 games per year. Maybe.

Texas (meaning the state not necessarily the university) has a lot more in common culturally with the schools on the west coast than the B10. Texas (meaning the university not the state) has a lot more in common with the liberal bastions of the California schools, Oregon and Washington than schools in the more conservative midwest.

Of course, just because the P10 has made an offer to Texas, does not mean they have to accept. Right now Texas is like the hottest chick in town, she can sit back and wait for the right suitor to make the best offer.

That pretty much forces Nebraska, Missouri, and Kansas into trying to find homes. Problem for those three is I don't think any of them fit into the SEC. So it looks like they would be trying to get into the Big 10. That still leaves Kansas St., Colorado St, and Baylor without a place to go. If the Pac-10 gets all the big fish out of the Big 12, the SEC and Big 10 could be left scrambling. The SEC probably takes FSU and Miami. Maybe Clemson, Virginia Tech, or Georgia Tech as well. If you assume they take the two Florida schools, Clemson, and GT, the ACC would be left with 8 schools. If the Big 10 adds three from the old Big 12 and 2 from the Big East (say Rutgers and Pitt), the remaining 6 from the Big East could combine with the ACC and add 2 more teams if they want to get to 16. They would have to split off the other 8 non-football schools which means the A-10 probably gets raided for 2-4 schools (namely Xavier, Dayton and maybe a couple more). This could get very interesting if this Pac-10 deal goes down.

Big Ten officials mum on expansion

1 hour, 22 minutes ago

PARK RIDGE, Ill. (AP)—The Big Ten did not take formal action during a meeting Sunday about conference expansion, although officials say their timeline may change after the Pac-10 revealed plans for their own expansion.

The 11 school presidents and chancellors along with Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick met for about 4 1/2 hours, and Big Ten commissioner Jim Delaney said the majority of time was spent on expansion dialogue.

Michigan State President Lou Anna K. Simon emphasized that academics would play a large role in determining what schools would be a good fit to join the Big Ten—not just athletics.

The Big Ten has been examining possible conference expansion since December.
