Butch to Purpooh?

Side question and I wanna hear some opinions. Would you rather see UC renovate 5/3 arena or Nippert first? Which do you think is more important to get the upgrades first?

Personally, I want to see 5/3 arena get re-done into a bad a$$ arena. But I also am a basketball fan first so naturally I am a bit biased. I just think UC is a basketball school first and that is who we are. We can't even get 35k in Nippert consecutive so adding some nice suites and more seats around 10k more really isn't going to do much. We don't need an arena with more seating but we need an arena with an actual arena seating feel. Just a few thoughts.

Basically, I really hope, if Butch does stay that we don't put all our money towards football first. I think basketball has been put on the back burner for obvious reasons but it is time to take the next step for our bball program.

I'm a basketball fan first, but I'd still rather see the facilities for football taken care of first. It's the driving force today and we need to get an invite to a better conference and have a chance to compete.

Basketball can compete right now. Then, use $ from improved conference and football success to fund basketball. Just my opinion if it's one versus the other.

Not to mention, where is Mick going if they don't upgrade Shoe first?

People aren't going to like to hear this but I think UC should work out a deal with the Bengals to play at PBS in the short term, renovate/build an arena for UC basketball and then, once in a conference and getting more money from the TV contract, you upgrade Nippert.

As a fan from a purely emotional standpoint I'd like to see 5/3rd get done first. This is a basketball school first and foremost. From a conference realignment standpoint of what's driving all this madness I think you have to get to Nippert sooner rather than later. I believe the University will do both at the same time once something actually gets done.

Ideally we'd get Burnett Woods and we'd build two new stadiums with shared parking on the site, how realistic that is??? I'm guessing not very unless the city sells us the land for $1 and a corporation steps up in a big way.

As a bball fan, I'd love to see a new bball arena. However football rules. You enhance nippert or go to PBS, that helps us get into a solid conference(make more money from tv deals), and then the money trickles down to bball.

Do we know when UC talks about upgrading/renovating 5/3 arena they mean actually renovating or building a completely new one? If they renovate the current arena, where would UC play their games? US Bank?

Ideally, they would build a new arena. The next question becomes, "Where?" If they tear down 5/3rd and build it in the same place, it is going to be tough for them to really improve. There isn't space to have an NBA style arena which is what UC really needs. How can you improve the sight lines in that box of an arena? Seems nearly impossible without knocking out structural walls which might be as expensive as a brand new arena.

Good points. I was thinking they would have to just tear it down and start new bc like you said, they need to take some walls down. Have you heard any talks with them also taking down the fieldhouse as well? I feel that is just a totally waste of space. I went to UC from 2004-2009, and besides a few intramural bball games this space was hardly used. I think you Jason had a great comment awhile ago. Hindsight being the arena could have been build where the practice bubble and other field is and put the practice bubble where 5/3 is now. I think the practice bubble is a nice additional but does anyone else feel it was kind of randomly decided and placed?

I can't take credit for that comment but I do agree with it re: practice bubble.

I think the Field House is a waste as well. From what I can tell, I don't think there would still be enough room even throwing in the Field House.

Thats a nice view photo. I agree with even the field house gone its not enough. I think they would have to get rid of Dabney Dorm hall. Which imo would not be a huge loss because those few dorms are a dump lol. Thankfully I never stayed in them but I always felt and still feel bad for students staying there. Its all wishful thinking and all problematic.

The current coaching situation with Butch Jones has made it somewhat clear that the renovation of Nippert Stadium will be the first priority. 5/3 Arena will not be renovated at anytime in the foreseeable future.

Football is first, basketball is second.

I wonder if that negotiation would be with the city or the Bengals. It is our stadium as taxpayers in Cincinnati. But with how egregious that lease, something tells me Mike Brown has the negotiating rights and gets the revenue.

I believe Mike Brown has the ultimate say.

Maybe we could ditch the trolley and put that money to good use!

sounds like butch and colorado have been in communication after all not good. http://www.dailycamera.com/top-sports/ci_22130026/butch-jones-and-cu-buffs-still-talking. Is it just me or does this seem to be getting ridiculous if he is going to leave just do it already so we dont miss out on a decent replacement. i know its a big decision but dam

Butch's agent has been in contact with both Colorado and UC (and who knows who else). Butch hasn't accepted anything yet and from what I heard, his agent is trying to get all the details pinned down from UC and CU so when Butch makes a decision he can sign and be done. I don't take anything from this.

From what I understand the university is sitting on plans to upgrade Nippert and 5/3rd. The plan for Nippert is to add about 10,000 seats, that would put it on par with the smaller stadiums in BCS conferences. From what I understand the plans for 5/3rd is to rotate the court and I assume eliminate the fold away seats and make better, permanent seating. The issue is money being available to go forward with these projects.

I think the option to move to Paul Brown is always there if that were a hanging factor on whether a better conference would want us. I think that would be the only way UC would move down there, unless it was a temporary move while Nippert was being upgraded. From past year's games UC found they needed to sell over 45,000 seats to outmake the money it gets from selling 35,000 at Nippert. The amount of money lost would be even more given the amount of seats we are currently selling and I can't see that getting any better with decreased competition. Moving to Paul Brown without the fan interest would be ass backwards to me. UC needs to just hope and pray one of the better conferences needs to go far enough down the totem pole to choose us to try and maintain its conference. Plain and simple. Sounds harsh, but the reality is what it is. As far as 5/3rd goes, I think when and if UC continues it's winning and the fan support comes back they can get a corporate sponsor to shell out some bucks to help in the upgrade. UC needs football to be good to be viable and make money and get into a better conference, but I think locally as far as fan support it will always be a basketball school. Kind of a weird situation, but UC's focus has to be on football to be able to move in a better conference to upgrade it's athletics as a whole. Basketball doesn't make money. Even if we sold out our season it wouldn't balance the university's athletic budget. Simply put, the TV dollars are insane for football.
