I don't get why any of you guys are hating on KJ. His shots aren't dropping, but his selection hasn't been horrible. He is very quick, and has some of the fastest hands I've seen at Cincinnati. He is going to rack up a lot of steals during his college career.
Shaq had a nice game. He played hard the whole game and looked a lot better on defensive rotations. That is probably why he played nearly 30 minutes. His ability to break down defenders, elevate, and pop the 10-12 footer is a unique skill that can save our behinds on stagnant possessions.
We got to see what JJ can do when he stays out of foul trouble. 19 points, 9 rebounds, 5 blocks... he was a monster. The offensive flashes of brilliance he has displayed the last 3 years are finally coming to fruition. It's a combination of increased confidence and patience with the ball on the block.
Lawrence is going to turn the ball over a lot this year, but I'm not worried about him long-term. He plays hard, rebounds, and might be able to anchor a defense if he sticks around long enough and puts on some muscle.
Not much to say about SK and Rubles that hasn't been said before.
Jermaine Sanders was quiet, but Mick's assessment of him being a cerebral player is very accurate. He's probably the least impressive athlete in our 9-man rotation, but he is never out of position and makes good decisions in general.
Caupain was quiet as well, but nothing to be concerned about. Guyn handled the point adequately tonight anyway. I think we all know what to expect from Guyn at this point -- good defense, the ability to get to the rim and finish when he wants to, and he will knock down an open 3 if presented the opportunity. He's not a playmaker, but he can get the ball across half court and start the offense without too much difficulty.
The offense looks much more fluid than last season, and I like that Cronin has been true to his word about pressing for 40 minutes. Shot selection has been excellent, no chucking 3's. Free throw shooting scares me, but we all knew that could be an issue. With the new rule emphasis, we are eventually going to get into a free-throw shooting contest with a capable opponent, and I fear we may be in trouble when that happens.
