Crosstown Shootout

DD needs to cut his 3 ball volume in half and Mikey needs to double his. MAW should not attempt more than 2-3 and be very picky like Mike is. Mason is now a heat check only for the time being. I am okay with JD shooting a lot but I would like him to score in other ways as well.

Not gonna judge Wes just yet on his X's and O's etc. I will give him some time to make adjustments. I remember not too long ago CJB thought Rap and Vogt would be a good pairing. It wasn't and there was an adjustment made. Some other adjustments were made out of necessity but a smart coach will learn what it is about their preferred style that works or does not and then will make a change.

It has been said if you aren't changing you are gonna get passed by...and I believe that to be the truth for the most part.

Also can't really judge Wes's X's and O's because we don't know how well players are actually executing. Wes's post game comments indicated that execution is quite poor. While that is also part of coaching, it's also common for a year one coach.

The main adjustment that can be made is in terms of substitution patterns. Start Lakhin and Saunders for one. Stop playing guys (especially backups) who aren't going to box out and rebound.

This basically same offense ran at last school, he doesn't have Isaiah Miller. Mickey is close and might eventually be better. DD/MAW isn't what he looking for out of guards. Neither has speed or play above rim. Same reason he doesn't love Paul Mcmillan, whose camp has made it a point to market his new athleticism since Summer.

I was looking at Bartorvik assist rates and yeah, Miller's teams the last three years were among the worst in the country at assist rate. Basically the complete opposite Brannen who valued ball movement above all.

I also think as long as nobody is slashing to the basket, our interior rebounding will continue to look inferior. Almost every rebound opportunity comes from jump shots, or long 3's.

Put back opportunities are scarce. With no slasher, Dd and Saunders get easier to guard throughout a game.

That lack of too many players, dribbling ability, also locks this current team up.
Challenge them to go to the rack!!!

The offense is exactly what we thought it would be. This is the offense Wes "runs". There won't be assists. effective fg % will be terrible. its just what it is.

the only hope is he finds some guys that can hit contested long 2's at a high clip.

And we won't be going to the free throw line much either. This is the first season Wes has had a team in the top 235 in free throw rate. Hard to have an efficient offense with low assists and free throws.

Good or even ok shooting can make up for a bad offensive scheme though. I don't expect us to shoot under 30% from three every year. We only did it once under Cronin (2010) and Wes only did it once at UNCG (last year).

Gonna have to get some guys in the game that can shoot or score. Mike is hitting his 3's, FT's and can make some plays and he assists. DD needs to pull back the 3's to about half his current volume. Vik is hitting 65% of his 2's. He doesn't assist a lot but he can pass pretty well. If he can score then we don't need him to pass much. Ody is at 63% on 2's.

With MAW shooting atrocious numbers and MM not doing well it's going to kill our numbers. Newman helps in other areas but shooting isn't one. Time to switch gears.

Vik
Ody
JD
DD
Mike

Ado is first big off the bench. Newman comes in for JD for defense. Let's see what McGinnis can do.

I agree with pretty much all of this except starting Ody. Ody has shown some interior scoring and offensive rebounding ability, but he has been horrible at boxing out and communicating on defense. I'd say Saunders, DDJ, Newman, Vik and Ado (5 of our 6 best players, with JD being the first guy off the bench). It does lead to the issue of where does scoring come from when starters are on the bench, but if you play the starters 30+ minutes (if they can take it), that may not matter too much.

Minutes wise would be
Saunders 30/MAW 10
DDJ 30/McGinnis (or MAW) 10
Newman 25/Davenport 15
Vik 20/Davenport 10/Hensley 10
Ado 20/Vik 10/Ody 10

I would agree Ado/Ody and JD/Newman are somewhat interchangeable parts. It depends on the matchup or what we need in the game offense or D. Ody can probably step out and guard the perimeter better (as well as score more) and Ado can guard the rim/paint better. JD can shoot and Newman can defend.

I think we need Ody to learn fast. Whatever he is not good at Wes needs to coach him up. Boxing out or communication is teachable.
