Hes gone... It makes no sense... But is what it is.

Agree, makes zero sense. Why would he leave his teammates, to go to another team, with new guys and new coach, for one year? Are there any rumors out there as to the reason? I know people said to be closer to home but that obviously isn't it.

Family wasnt thrilled that brannen didnt reach out to them within 15 minutes of excepting the job... This one is so bizarre.

Hes an older senior as is. Sit out a yr. Take off yr of career. New coach. New system. For one season. Mind boggling.

Hopefully truly thinks this through. Bc its not makikg sense.

NCAA is rapidly (for them) moving towards allowing students to have the same rights as coaches...to leave one place & go to another without any penalty (at least one time during academic career). They are increasingly granting waivers for students to play immediately when the coaches that recruited them bail. Maybe he thinks he won't have to sit a year??
Sit or not, it looks like he's long gone...already trying to schedule visits...LSU, Texas Tech, Miami. Maybe he figures sitting a year & then playing for a big name team that actually can win a few games when the spotlight is on is worth a year out for his future pro aspirations

assume the worst

Let's assume Nysier is gone...Jarron is gone (maybe not straight to NBA, but somewhere that pays) - we know Fredericks is gone - let's also assume Samari will never play for UC.

What does the starting 5 look like? Williams, LoJo, Diarra/Nsoseme, Gillan Toyambi & Scott? Moore playing a ton...no backup point - this "worst case" scenario is pretty dismal (could be more dismal if LoJo would bolt)

Given the dire possibilities, how does a coach get anyone, recruit or grad transfer to even come to UC? Without some clarity, how do you do anything?
On the other hand, if there were no defections other than Fredericks, next season looks pretty good.

Given that probably nothing will be for sure in Jarron's case for another month since the decision date is now in late May, after combines, how in the hell does our new coach plan? I have to assume he can get some hard commits from existing players, but in the cases of Brooks & Cumberland I have to figure he would proceed as if they were gone. However, if you're a potential grad transfer guard, wouldn't you want to go somewhere where you know the situation you're getting into? Seems like the uncertainty would tie the coaches' hands...& we're still short some coaches.

nyone have some more positive takes?

I’m confused. I read all the time that we can’t get a recruit because no playing time. Then if a ton of playing time opens we can’t get a recruit because the program is in bad shape?

I’m nervous but letting coach do his job.

I think the former concern remains a greater issue than the latter.

As far as I know, right now, we're operating/recruiting as if we have 11 scholarships filled for next season.

If there's a slimmer of hope that players like Cumberland, Brooks and Curtis will be on the team next year, then I want us to prepare as if they will be, and recruit the 'best of the rest' once we learn they officially won't be available.

Any player entering the portal needs to know that we are looking to replace them ASAP. As soon as we find someone that fits the system...we have to lock them in or give the player in the portal a chance to come out.

Brooks being the primary guy here. Sounds like he is the only one besides Fredericks in the portal. I would keep a spot open for Cumberland no matter what until he has to make that decision for good.

So I am looking to replace Brooks and Fredericks right now. Then I think we have one other spot to fill for the time being. Hopefully we have Curtis and Johnson on board and hopefully Cumberland comes back.

can we give the guy more than 3 weeks before we start getting nervous? Coaches usually recruit players for years (at least several months) before they get a commitment but we are expecting recruits to line up within 3 weeks?

I'm more concerned about the Staff.

Travis Steele Knocked it out of the park with his 2 big coaching staff hires because they had guys in the pipeline and they recruited a certain region extremely well.

Just 1 year later they will bring in a top 20 class to start 2019 and they already have a top 50 player committed for 2020

Travis Steele hit 2 Homeruns on his staff and now is hitting HR's in recruiting.

just a little frustrating because we just went into a crucial recruiting people with an analytics guy who has never really recruited before and another guy who wont actually be on the bench, but rather in a support role.

In my opnion, Brannen put all his eggs in Pettway's basket and clearly they talked before hand about him taking the job and he was caught flat footed when Alabama counted and he choose to stick to his alma mater. Now its almost getting too late for a guy to want to jump staffs.

LOL Were gonna end up with the NKU staff.

Brannen is quickly realizing the reality of not being in a power league with power league money and power league visibility

xaviers recruiting didn't uptick, they've been getting guys for years.

all the people i've seen panic have just so happened to be guys that were huge mick supporters. i wonder why that is.

I don't really wonder why that is.

That's fair. I do not know enough about the college assistant coaches, to be concerned or not. I usually know who they are but i don't know if they are any good at what they do. You never know if it's the assistant coach having success or the coach he is recruiting for. I also don't know who he wants, can get, or wants to come here. The coach we had left, I am willing to give the new guy a chance before I start getting concerned.

Well for years we have been told that Mick was trash and that we could do some much better.

So now it’s here.

And I will hold John Brannen to an incredibly high standard. Just like mick was held to one.

Especially knowing that we could have kept mick fairly easily but Bohn choose not to.

If jarron returns and still we miss the tourney next year I’ll be borderline calling for his head. If it stretches to 2 years in a row, I’ll absolutely want him gone, especially if doesn’t have a top 100 commit by then.

It will only take a few down years in a non power league to really kill your momentum.

For now, I’m all in. But I will absolutely be expecting the world of John Brannen. He inquired about the job before it was even open, Bohn didn’t want to retain mick for 6 years, and half the fan base says we can do better. So my expectations are blue blood level.

So if you’re holding him to micks standards he doesn’t ever have to achieve anything meaningful... sounds easy enough

and after 2 weeks we should clearly give up on him!

and mick wasn't staying here. i don't really know why you have this image of mick wanting to be here so bad but big bad bohn just didn't like him and made him leave.

mick wanted out and mick chose to leave. he wasn't passing up ucla, it didn't matter what bohn did.

he's got 2 years to make it to .500, 5 years to make a tournament, and 13 years to make 1 sweet 16. those are the extremely high mick cronin standards we hold around here.

This does not sound like you are all in. Sounds like you are looking for reason to call for his head. Sounds like you can’t wait to call for his head. Sounds like you can’t wait to say, I told you so. That mick is the best coach we could ever get. But maybe this isn’t what your saying

You can cry about mick leaving forever, like the Huggins people that are still crying 20 years later or you can move on. Really that simple. He’s not coming back

Does the big east have more money than the aac?

Literally 2 weeks before mick signed with UCLA, he would have renewed with UC for 2.5 million if it was a 6 year deal.

Bohn refused. Mick was patient. And mick left.

Multiple who would know have mentioned this.

2.5 million is literally the same amount mick is going to bring home after taxes in UCLA. 6 years would match the contract length. But Bohn choose other plans.

And regardless.... fired, left, pushed out, quit,.... if doesng matter.. for years on this very board multiple people have said we can do better then mick.

So I am ready for it.

I want top multiple top 100 recruits

I want 9 straight tourney appearances

I want league titles

I want conference titles

I want guys playing in the NBA

I want a squeaky clean program

I want multiple sweet 16’s and a final four too

That’s what I expect and I expect it now.

Considering mick literally left you a brand new arena that he had to threaten to go to unlv to get, a top 15 roster..., which all you gotta do is sell your brand and keep it in tact.

I don’t think I’m being unreasonable in the slightest.

John Brannen & mike Bohn are our saviors from mediocre Mick.

Let’s gets started

Also.....

I never said I gave up on John Brannen. I just think he expected that upgrading from NKU to cincinnati meant it was going to be easy to land top recruits and top assistants.

Once the games start... I’ll be all in

But right now, all I can grade him on is what he’s done. Thus far he’s had very little celebrate.

Literally he is able to turn us into NKU 2.0 staff wise if he doesn’t make a splash hire soon.

Also.... if Brannen gets us rolling, I’ll be happy too: I’ll still go to every single game regardless but I do have high expectations. In fact my expectations of John Brannen are higher than that of most UCLA fans of mick Cronin
