TLL on the St. John's game thread:

"I will say this... Dion Dixon should not be allowed to shoot the three ball."

Good thing Mick listens to the Ralph and not TLL.

Ralphy Ralphy Ralphy. Once again you try to diminish my brilliant insight and yet manage to not have a clue.

Dion shot 1-5 from three last night.. He is the worst percentage three point shooter on the team (besides jackson who hasnt shot enough to qualify) for a reason. He shoots alot of them and doesnt make many.

Dion inside the arc is good to go, Dion can get this team a basket or get to the line when we need him to. He made some clutch shots last night. Dion is a GREAT player for this team, hes just not a pure 3pt shooter

I have to say I've given SK some hell for his D, but the guy stepped up last night and probably was the deciding factor holding Thompson to 0 points in the second half. Not to mention the offensive display SK put on last night.

Great game for him.

I've got to say seeing all the movement in the second half, is the way this offense needs to run, driving, dishing, moving off the ball. That is the way this team will be it's best!

Also have to give Mick huge props for his adjustments last night. Calling off the press, demanding more driving and less standing around and settling for three's, isolating on one man who couldn't guard anyone down the stretch, going back and forth man to zone.

A well coached game I thought.

At times the D and the O both looked sloppy but the guys never gave up and did what they needed to do to get the win.

Dion was 1-4 from three? 25% since I doubt you can do that math. That isn't very good and I would NOT take that every game. Where Dion was good was inside the arc.

And off the dribble, Dion does better off the dribble than around the perimeter. Last night is the way he needs to play, drive, dish and get your shot, don't settle for the threes, that is not his game.

Is there even a debate about this. Dion's at his best when attacking the basket and pulling up for short jumpers. Dion needs to lower his 3 output to about 20-25% of his shots a game. Right now about 42.7% of his shots are from behind the arc. Compare this with Kilpatrick who's three pointers make up over 55% of his shots and you can see the wing players are attacking enough. Kilpartrick does hit 39% of his three point shots, while Dixon is way down at 25%. Dixon has never been a good three point shooter. His best season as a Bearcat is 35.6%.

I will give the players and coaches credit for last night.

Mick was able to adjust after Drubiek or whoever, was killing the Cats. The players were finally able to hit clutch free throws and make plays when needed.

Hopefully this team can gain some consistency

Good teams find ways to win, but great teams find consistency.

They need to realize when the 3 isnt falling to drive early on. They seem to make that adjustment late in games. Defensively, I've mentioned it before, they chase and come too far to contest shots. They get over aggressive and it gets them out of position

Phrases like this are exactly why Our Lady Of Pertual Motion offered you the coaching position. Do you even know how good you are?

I am giving this team credit for being good and you come at me like this?

They are a step away from being a great team

As for me, Im damn good. Youtube me ha

dixon shooting

In the last 5 games we have played good quality teams, OKL, Pitt, ND, St. J, and Gtown, in those five games dion has went 5-28 from the three point line
roughly 18%, which is awful. In those same games he was 19-37 inside the arc 51% which is more than solid. This being said i would like to think our shooting guard can know down some threes, and we have all seem him do that, but he won't be remember at UC for being a guy that can stroke the three.

P.S. he was also 18-20 at the free throw line thats 90%

Few thoughts on the game...

As much as I'd like to think if only we'd have shown up vs. St. Johns we'd be 4-0, I don't think we get that kind of effort last night had we beat St. Johns, we were hungry last night, especially on D. I think the loss had a lot to do with that...

Anyone else think the rims are bigger at the Verizon Center than anywhere else? Georgetown couldn't miss, we couldn't miss after that horrific start. We even hit a high percentage of free throws...

Anyone else notice coming out of a TV timeout a sign a student was holding that said something about revenge? Isn't it nice to have such a prominent program put a target on our backs? Isn't even nicer to know they failed to get that revenge?

Great Post!! I saw that revenge thing too and thought the same thing. I believe that Mick has recruited a team and made good enough adjustments during the game to expect these kind of games in the future. I feel that UC is on the cusp of being a consistent tournament team.. Hopefully we can go as far as the 9th place team went last year...

I think Dixon does well when he shoots the rhythm 3.
Problem is, he just seems to be popping them off indiscriminately.

He's been missing just about every 3 possible lately. He had one against GU where it was completely in rhythm and he was wide open and he didn't even come close.

You miss enough, the easy ones become a challenge.
How wide open he is, used to not matter.
Not to say he was a lock to hit it, but he was much better than this earlier in the year and last year.

Dixon is a streaky shooter at best, I am not opposed to him shooting 3's as long as they are open, they'll start going in...

He has never been a good shooter. Even last year was his best year and it was an average percentage for a SG. He is a career 28.8% 3 point shooter, and is hitting them at a 25.6% rate this year.

He has only shot over 50% from 3 in a game once this year (Georgia) and since then he is 8 for his last 48 attempts (17%). I think it's safe to say he just isn't a good shooter. In fact, his overall FG% is terrible as well and second worst on the team only behind Mbodj. But I think if he ever realizes he isn't a good shooter his numbers will increase because he'll stick to taking high percentage shots.

That being said, when he is WIDE open, I don't mind him shooting it because you can't have a SG playing that is no threat to shoot. At least make the defense honest every now and again.

Right now, he's not even close to average though. You can't really pretend he's himself, because he's nowhere near the mid 30% range where he should be.
As for his career, his freshman year distorts that figure.
Not really fair to even count that one, as his shooting got better the two years following. Two years of improvement is no fluke, the past 6-7 games might be. Though I am impressed by some of his mid-range jump shots lately. Especially the turn around one he had in the first half of the GT game.
Me personally, I'd prefer if he only shot 3's once in awhile.
It is nice to see he can hit freethrows again though.

I don't think we really have a pure shooter on this team.
