Happy we have Mick

I think this year is going to be a great measure of how good of a recruiter Mick really is. Everyone is hyping up this recruiting class so much, even though to me it looks really similar to the 2011 class that hasn't stepped up in at all.

-Guyn/Johnson
-JDIII/Caupain
-Sanders/Morman
-Thomas/Lawrence
-Ellis/Strickland

I also think its alarming that even though Mick was able to offer immediate playing time to top recruits with Yancy and Cashmere leaving, our point guard and center spots are huge question marks.

This really shows how much luck is involved. What if Ellis doesn't allegedly hit the bouncer? What if JD3 doesn't get hurt this past year? I never expected much from Guyn. Sanders is a valid point. Thomas has only played 1 year of D1 ball, I don't think you can count his year as a practice player.

Compare the number of 4 and 5 star recruits Huggs had before and after Mick and the number of 4 and 5 during Micks stay at UC. Lets see it, I will be waiting, the numbers won't lie.........,

LOL what? Mick isn't responsible for Huggs recruits. They came here because Huggs built a great program. Mick has had Lance and thats it. SK is solid but he might not even make it to the NBA. Huggs had flat out studs. Don't give our boy Mick credit for Huggs teams because that's garbage.

To me they don't look similar at all. This years class is light years better coming in. Now, they may prove me wrong. ;)

-Guyn (3 stars) /Johnson (3 stars)
-JDIII (3 stars) /Caupain (3 stars)
-Sanders (3 stars) /Morman (3 stars)
-Thomas (4 stars)/ Lawrence (4 stars)
-Ellis (3 stars) /Strickland (2 stars)

To say they are light years better without seeing them play one college game seems a bit ridiculous

Just an opinion. I understand your point, but I never thought Guyn, Sanders, JDIII, or Ellis were going to be anything special.

I think all 5 of the newcomers have a chance and I think it is likely at least 3 live up to that.

I'll just put my 2 cents in real quick and make a generalized comment about the back and forth about quality of players/ good recruits between huggs and cronin.

College basketball, especially in recruiting is different now than it was in the 90's...shoot even very early 2000's. Social media, media coverage, facilities, money are all way different now with Cronin being our head coach compared to when Huggs was. When all those factors I just mentioned above became a part of college basketball, UC basketball what absolutely imploded. UC was virtually non existent.

To compare players who Huggs brought compared to Cronin is comparing apples to oranges. There was so many different factors its crazy to debate it. I don't understand why so many UC fans still want to argue it. We have gotten to the point where we should all reasonably appreciate and be proud of what Cronin has been able to do. The only thing we should care about is player development because the coaches now are doing a pretty darn good job with the resources they are given.

Im Happy we have Mick because it pisses of the so called "good kids" at that other school.

They make the school look just as bad(actually way worse) than those self entitled thugs that play on the team

Haha, thanks for the laugh, XU fans still struggling to accept their defeat this year. When we lost to them in the early years of Mick, I got endless crap. Now, all the excuses come out. I didn't even have to say anything the day after and the excuses started coming. Maybe we need to start a Chris Mack thread and make fun of his lack of eyebrows and how he threw an inbounds pass off of an opponent's face when his team was up by a lot in the final seconds of a game when he still played.

(Note sarcasm, we don't need to stoop to their level to enjoy it)

Agree with this 100%

I agree with this. It's impossible to compare recruiting due to the different era's. It needs to be pointed out though, Mick's players thus far do not even compare to the players Huggs had here. And I mean it's not even CLOSE. Mick's a hell of a coach but I'm not entirely sold on his recruiting.

Im sold on his recruiting, but not his development of bigs. When you look at our budget, facilities, and other resources, it shows why recruiting for Mick in the early years was hard. He has done an excellent job getting players like Yancy, Cashmere, Shaq, Lawrence, Stephenson, Biggie McClain (yes, Biggie was pretty highly touted), etc. to buy into the program. I will give him a pass on Wright due to his knee/ACL injuries, but Yancy, Stephenson, and Biggie (although injuries also played a factor with him) didnt progress as I hoped they would've. Yancy turned out to be a decent player, but either he was mis-evaluated or he just didnt develop properly. Don't get me wrong, I wish we still had Yancy and he showed glimpses of greatness, but he never became the dominant player we all thought he could've been. Biggie struggled through injuries, but he always looked like he was lost and just not very athletic to me. Stephenson had a good freshman year, but he wasn't nearly as matured and polished as most thought he would be/other one-and-dones are. On the flip side, he has also done a good job of finding players that fall through the cracks like JaQuon Parker, Deonta Vaughn, and John Williamson who exceed expectations. Huggs was pretty similar and you can see how Mick coached under Huggs for a while.

I'd agree with the majority of what you said. I saw monster potential in Stephenson even when he was here though. That kid could attack with the best of them. Cash is tough to judge because of injuries but I thought he had a bad year last year. Yancy and Cash were both big time recruits that didn't do much for me personally. I didn't see much in their development. A few of the underrated guys like Bishop and Williamson I enjoyed watching.

I disagree about Cash. He was really good his junior year and was off to a phenomenal start last year until the knee and shoulder injuries. This team was undefeated and ranked as high as #8 last year and that was largely attributed to Cash before the injury.

Yeahh, it was such a shame when Wright hurt his knee. He was playing lights out and was a straight floor general. We really took a hit when that happened and couldn't find anyone else to step up.

I may have jumped the gun on that. He was playing lights out. That knee killed him.

Andy Kennedy and Frank Martin, to name some you might have heard of. He had no one early on at UC, then he had Cronin, Kennedy, and Martin. After he left K-State, he has had nobody as far as recruiting goes. He didn't have superior talent early on, he had JUCO guys like Van Exel that he helped mold into a great player and other recruits tht fell through the cracks. It was much easier to find guys like this before social media and the obsession with recruiting there is now. When recruiting started to be followed much closer, he had guys like Cronin, Martin, and Kennedy to help him get some big time guys and find some guys who fell through the cracks.

Yea, Huggs was a darn good coach...look at that coaching tree. They came to play for Huggs

Stokes came into the store couple weeks ago and he his exact quote was....."You're going to tell me I get to play for the number 1 team in the country and wear Jordan??? Yes please"

It was the program Huggins built. Especially when coaches come and go but the man at the top is the common factor...
