Only reason why I ask is because Vidal tweeted that he was going to try to get another year.

According to Paul Dehner Jr. in this morning's Bearcat Breakfast, UC and Vidal will be applying for another year. He played in 2006, 2007, and 2008 at USC (with a couple of those years riddled with injury). Sat out 2009 due to transfer rules and thus, because he did not voluntarily sit out (i.e. - redshirt), he will have an opportunity to gain another year. It doesn't mean that it will happen but there are cases like his where the NCAA has ruled in favor of the athlete. To be honest, I would be surprised if he isn't given another year.

Also, Paul said that it will happen after the season. Quite frankly, the NCAA should get their shit together and be able to hear this case during the season. The fact that they are so inefficient is really inexcusable.

This is what sucks about the whole situation. If Hazelton applies after the season it might be until summer camp of next season before he hears anything. Hell, it might be game week before he hears anything.

^^^ See my post in the UC v. UK NCAA thread. It seems to me that the NCAA always seems to make expiditious ruling when other teams are involved; however with UC they always wait until the last minute to make a decision and UC is left with no way of making adjustments/recruiting other players, etc before the finger is given to them.

This is the opposite of what they were saying yesterday. I wish compliance would make up their mind. I thought he was eligible for hardship but everyone came out and said nope yesterday. Confusing. I think the attempt to get year 6 will be in vain.

Pulled this off the headlines thread as it is relevant to our discussion. Sounds like to get a sixth year you need two years taken from you by means out of your control. The NCAA considers transferring as something you control. So for him to get his sixth year the NCAA would have to rule that his 2008 season was lost due to injury. I know he missed time that year because of an injury, but I don't think it was a clear-cut case of him being out the whole year as he was not medically redshirted. Reminds me of the Ben Mauk situation. I would highly doubt this decision goes in our favor. This is a real bummer. I was excited to see what he could do on the field for us.

Do extenuating circumstances play a role? I know he transferred from USC to UC to be closer to his grandfather (as well as more playing time) and now a freak injury in the first game of the season... I know NCAA seems to have it out for us, but come on, throw us a bone here.

I would say the fact that he wasn't redshirted at USC will be his demise. The NCAA could probably care less why he chose to transfer.

The transfer might be his demise but the lack of a redshirt is a good thing. The NCAA views a redshirt as a voluntary act by the student athlete.

Didnt he say he transferred because of his ill grandfather? I dont know if it is true but he has said that since the beginning.

I meant a medical redshirt. A medical redshirt clearly states that you are injured and can't perform. I remember the Ben Mauk case and the specific reasons were Wake Forest didn't clearly label his first injury and have proper paperwork for the NCAA to justify that he was out for the year beyond his control. He was injured and could have played but at that point he wasn't the starter and it didn't hurt to keep him on the bench just in case. I feel the same is true with the Hazelton injury in 2008. It was probably a nagging injury that kept him off the field, but not severe enough to warrant redshirting him in case other injuries occured and they needed him. If they would have medically redshirted him in 2008 (assuming the injury was early enough in the season), then he would have a good chance to get that extra year.

It looks like a long shot that his career will be extended. I feel really bad for the kid never really got a chance to display all that talent he had. Wish him the best.
