We have a whole week off to prepare for our trip to Houston Saturday.
Game time: 9pm ET
TV: ESPNU
Scouting Houston:
#41 in Kenpom
#23 in Offensive Efficiency
#93 in Defensive Efficiency
What they do well:
Shoot the 3: Houston is by far the best percentage 3 point shooting team we will face this year. As a team they shoot 42%. They have 6 games this year with double digit 3 pointers made. They can hit in volume but also make sure they are taking efficient shots. Absolutely need to play man to man.
Defend the 2 point shot: Houston is 24th in the country at 2 point shot defense. Chicken knowles is the best shot blocker. This will be a battle of wills, UC is one of the best at scoring 2 point baskets and they are top 25 at defending it. Need good ball movement.
Protect the ball Houston is also top 20 at protecting the ball. Teams that protect the ball, shoot the 3 and are on their home court tend to give us some trouble. We need to get them frazzled and out of sorts early. The pace might be slow (they play a lot slower than last year) though.
What they Struggle with:
Defensive rebounding. : Gary, Kyle and Tre should be able to impose their will on the offensive glass. Its not a strength of Houston and I hope that if we cant hit our first shot, we can get it on the next.
Defending the 3: Houston is ranked 135 in 3pt % defense. They'd rather you take open 3's than score down low. At the pace they play in, it may come down to finding the open 3 point shooter and him executing.
Houston's Big :
6'2 JR G Rob Gray 20 PPG/3 APG/46% 3pt%
Rob Gray is a canidate for American Player of the year behind Dedric Lawson. Scores at all levels and drawa 5.4 Fouls per 40. Shut him down.
6'5 SR F Damyean Dotson 15.5 PPG/6.9 RPG/48% 3pt%
Lights out 3 point shooter. Has taken over 90 3's and made nearly half of them. On Defense plays more like a big man and is the teams leading rebounder. Very Trevon Blueitt like in that he is undersized but rebounds well and shoots extremely well.
6'1 SO PG Galen Robinson 5 PPG/5 ApG/2 TO PG
I could have gone with Chicken knowles here but Robinson is the PG that finds his shooters. He doesn't score much and is mostly pass first but he is good at protecting the ball and getting his guys open.
Also of note:
F Chicken Knowles: Doesn't do anything particularly great but scores 10pgg and can block shots on D.
G Wes VanBeck: Well what do ya know, another guy who can shoot the 3 at 52%. He is the teams first guy off the bench and usually plays as much as some starters do. Mostly just shoots 3's
FYI: IF you want to watch Houston before they play us. They play Tulsa on ESPNU this coming Wednesday at 9pm
