Lipscomb

Big question on Harvey. I hope it’s because of injury that he was limited. Keith played only 22 minutes and we basically had a 5 man rotation. If Keith plays 30 minutes does Harvey play only 7? And who thought Davenport would be the 6th or 7th man?

Nobody else was a factor for serious rotation minutes

I think coach tried to play others, they just weren’t good and we needed to get a win.
Dou was bad. Hopefully it’s just one game but his track record says it’s not. Except for the 4-5 games last year, that is what he has been.
He tried to play Eason, but he keep throwing the ball to the other team.
Harvey is the only one that should have played in my opinion.
The rest are freshman.

I know it's just one game but our quality depth went from great to not good (at least for me). Dou still has the same problems. Eason made a LOT of mistakes. I guess Davenport was a positive. Lakhin may not play this year. Like I said it's early but you can't play guys in close games who either make a lot of mistakes or blow assignments. That will need to be fixed.

From a guard standpoint I was expecting more minutes out of Harvey with a tight game and Williams out of the game so much. Brannen tried to get the frosh in early in case he couldn't get them in late. That was clearly pre determined. But Harvey seemed to be having some success out there. So not sure if he blew assignments or if he was on a "play count" due to injury. Either way it was a little concerning he couldn't log 20 minutes in a game where Keith was out so much.

I want the cats to do well and so they need a very active defensive big as Tre Scott isn't coming back. I will hold further comment until I see the X and UT games.

I mean if people are wanting Vogt to be a great defensive stopper and anything less than that means he’s sucks, then people are going to be disappointed. He’s never going to be a great help guy unless the ball handler drives right into where he’s already standing.

What he did a great job of was not letting their best player set up camp in the paint all night. But nobody seems to want to acknowledge that part. When he got the ball player on offense he scored.

Our spacing vs the zone seemed really off. Vogt and Rap were nearly touching when Rap was at the FT line and Vogt on the block. There is no way to get Vogt the ball like that.

Well tonight Keith was terrible and in foul trouble. Harvey could have took some of his minutes. DeJulius also didn’t do anything for the first 30 minutes of the game. Could have had some of those minutes also. If someone is playing well, you find minutes for them. It’s really not that hard.

You just aren’t benching the guy you think will lead you all season in game one after he’s sat with 3 fouls. If Harvey keeps doing it, he’s going to get more playing time.

Yah we will probably see a lot of zone but MAW, Keith, and Harvey aren’t horrible shooters by stat. And we picked up Dejulius and Madsens. Tonight was awful but let’s wait just a bit

I don’t think any teams will try to stop MAW, Keith, or Harvey from shooting. MAW has a small sample size, but after a hot start last year shot 28% from 3 in conference, Keith has never been a shooter, and Harvey has way too much arc on his to ever be consistent.

DeJulius might be the best of the bunch but he’s never shot a lot of them either and is at 32% for his career.

I never thought we’d be super deep. Too many freshmen. Even good freshmen go up and down throughout the year. I never thought the Russian guy was going to play this year. To me, dou was the most disappointing. Maybe it’s just one game but I really thought he was past being completely lost. Also, everyone says they are deep, but most coaches only play 7 guys when they need to win

Yah I figured we would get a couple of frosh to step up and Dou would be comfortable by now. Eason is going to be dynamite if he can play with discipline so I hope that happens real soon. We won't get many games like Lipscomb we can tinker with the frosh so we could be looking at 7 man rotation for a good portion of the year which means we can't go 94 ft both ways like Brannen would like to do. If we can get to 8-9 deep we can press and run and gun.

It's one game...but I just don't know how to get the frosh experience if they can't get it against Lipscomb.

Yah we aren't going to be a great 3 pt shooting team but we will be alright. Mainly if we take shots like Jenifer used to take. About an inch past the arc. We were bombing last night 5-6 ft past the line. We need to take a step in and take those when we can and avoid the bombs till late in clock. The 3 line has moved out a couple of times but we can't keep moving with it and taking shots two full steps off the line and expect to hit the same %. 90% of these guys are not NBA talents. I am sure some players like Gabe have the range...but most of these guys would be better off being a little more selective.

To add to this. There aren’t many good shooting teams in college basketball. That’s why everyone plays zone. If we are able to be decent, keep them honest, I think we will be fine. We aren’t going to be as bad as last night.

The Next Step:

From what I saw last night, I am hoping by mid season Eason is starting, instead of "Rap" or "Vogt". 1 of them comes off the bench.

Of course this time needs to be earned, but Eason is going to be special, and why wait?

"Rap" and "Vogt" are defensive liabilities period. The athleticism in the AAC will not be kind to those guys unfortunately.

These guys have got to be killers on the defensive backboard, or give the Young Guys their minutes. Vogt 32 minutes 7 rebs, he needs to be a double double guy nightly. Rap 26 minutes 6 rebs, needs 8 a game.

Eason 8 minutes 3 rebs.. Enough said!!

Agree with most of this. Eason going to be good. Disagree with Vogt becoming some kind of great rebounder though. Rebounding is mainly about being in the right position or getting to that position. It’s not about being tall. Vogt doesn’t move well. If you Can’t move, you are never going to be able to get a lot of rebounds

voght watches instead of trying to figure where the ball comes for a rebound. he is slow of foot and reactions. The AAC has quick strong guys. Just becaust the guy he guarded was the best on the bisons doesn't mean he would start for Houston or memphis.

I think you answered your own question within the same sentence. He had 4 turnovers in 8 minutes and after one of the TO's he fouled the guy out of frustration. His talent level is clear but he's going to have to play with some discipline. I'll be excited to see him play again under a little more control.

I’d guess he was a little pumped up to finally be playing. Also adjustment period for all freshmen. I think he will have big games and no shows. Hopefully more good than bad. Similar to Jarron freshmen year.

I never said he’d start on those teams. Vogt is what he is. Everyone said the aac would eat him up last year, but he was pretty good for a lot of it. I was hoping dou would be good enough to take his spot this year and I still hope that’s the case but after last night, it was disappointing

It's going to be tough sledding for minutes for most of the frosh not named Eason. We won't see a team ranked as low as Lipscomb for the next 10 games. OOC is typically when you want to get your frosh some experience against a couple patsies. Eason is clearly talented enough to carve out some heavy minutes if he plays with discipline.

Not sure where to put Davenport and Dou right now or Eason for that matter. 1 or 2 of them has a good chance to find a spot in the rotation.

With the way MAW played not sure where to put Harvey either. MAW can start at the 2 and be primary backup for DD. He looks primed for 30 minutes now. Can Harvey get to 20 mpg? Last night would have been a game he could have played 25 with Keith out but only got 15 which is basically what Davenport got.

I worry a little bit about playing time frustration. Some of the frosh, Harvey, Dou etc. I sure hope Brannen can manage the situation. In a Covid shortened year...we might lose the ability to give them court time to keep them satisfied until it's their time to shine. I want most of these guys to want to stick around and not get frustrated.

My take is not to read too much into the first game. First game jitters and excitement can cause players to try to do too much, or make simple mistakes.

I did not think we played well overall, had Libscomb not shot themselves in the foot with TO's and fouls, they could well have won.

A couple concerns based on last season have become bigger concerns based on them showing themselves again. Williams getting into foul trouble early, Diarra being unable to play the 4 and (yes) even Vogt struggling at the 5. Rap struggled guarding the perimeter, though he did rebound better than I expected.

Eason definitely showed potential, but he made a lot of mistakes on both ends. Looks like he needs to clean his game up quite a bit before he gets major minutes. Gabe missed some open 3's, but the bigger concern is that he was getting beat on defense.

Our interior defense was poor and Libscomb had quite a bit of success driving the ball. Vogt is who he is and Rap isn't nearly at Tre Scott's level on defense.

We looked good the final 8 or so minutes of the game. Vogt especially excelled after being shutdown for the first 32 minutes. If Vogt played like he did in the last 8 minutes all game, every game I'd have no complaints. But I suspect it was in part because Lipscomb's only real big (Abadullah) started to tire out - props to Vogt for having better conditioning. Lipscomb's second "big" fouling out and Davenport at the 4 also made a difference.

I am less worried about Diarra at the 5. He has historically struggled to defend big physical 5's. He also has a history of getting overly excited. His defense at the 5 should be strong where Vogt's is weak - against more mobile, athletic 5's.

The bright spots of the game were MAW and Davenport. MAW played a solid game and made quite a few plays. Davenport did nothing but good things every time he came it. Davenport especially was a surprise due to uncertainty regarding his injury status.

I continue not to expect much from this team. The RAP/Vogt combo seems likely to struggle as expected and really slows the game down as well. If Rap/Vogt/Diarra rotated at the 5, it means that our guards are going to be getting a lot of minutes and besides MAW/Davenport nobody really shone either. Keith I expect to play much better. But the depth seems questionable after Harvey.

Hoping we at least go 2-2 over the next year, better would be nice, but I'd be happy with 2-2 with what I saw last night.

Good breakdown.

Between the Princeton offense Lipscomb ran, the zone they displayed that they hadn't shown in their first two games, Keith's foul trouble, our abysmal 3-point shooting, and combining all of that with a team playing their first game while breaking in 5 new players, there were quite a few reasons for us to struggle as we did against a less talented team for 30 minutes.

The final 10 minutes and final score indicate we do have the talent to play at a high level when we put everything together.

If we go 2-2 for the rest of our OOC, that means we'll likely pick up at least one 1 Q1/Q2 win with the possibility of another.

The quality of competition we will have faced will give us a boost compared to a good portions of our peers in the AAC once we start conference play.

I'm a little concerned with who we are going to trot out on defense for the short term when the other teams bigs can shoot on the perimeter. Dou still seems lost. Eason will be mistake prone for a while. Davenport could be a little undersized. I don't think Rap will cut it and Vogt we don't want out of the paint.
