Memphis

Curry= "pure" shooter. Bearcats= "streak" shooters. Big difference.
The point is this is not a team of reliable capable shooters and these unreliable shooters are not well coached offensively. Please explain the low point output during Cronins tenure ? I feel its recruiting and coaching.....both on Cronin.
Yes Cronin is responsible for the program. He is the Coach. Personally with what this program has to offer I think he has done a great job. We took a tough loss at Memphis. On to the next game.

Memphis was incredibly lazy with their rotations. Most of those shots were the correct play.
More by design than "lazy". Memphis wasn't running out to the perimeter to even challenge the 3. Some time you have to take a couple of dribbles in for mid range jumpers , not toe up to the 3 point line every time. Every jumpshot doesnt have to be a three.

If the only way Memphis can beat UC is to leave Farad Cobb wide open looks and hope he misses, the Bearcats beat them 7 or 8 out of 10 times. That said, I do think Evans is most effective at the rim. But most teams are going to flatten out their back line and force the 'Cats to take and make some shots. I was happy with the way the offense ran and the shots UC got. My bigger issue was with the way they quit playing defense and allowed Memphis to out-energy them in the first 10 minutes of the game. It's a tired refrain from this season that needs to be corrected. Xs and Os are not why they lost the game.

I've been talking about the need to recruit pure shooters for the past 3-4 years, as have others. I'd rather have well rounded basketball players than gazelles who thrive in the open court but front-rim 3 footers UNLESS you're going to play the style West Virginia plays. Some of that is changing though. Troy is an all-around player. Evans is a basketball player. Cumberland fits this mold. Kyle Washington has skill and basketball IQ. And so forth.

No Mick apologist here, but I noticed at least twice on Saturday Mick imploring Troy to push the pace of the game. Also noticed that Memphis made a conscious choice to slow the game down. Coincidence?

Call me wildly optimistic but I think this team is on the verge of finding themselves in a major way. Effort and intensity have to be there from the get-go. That's the only real thing keeping them from being a Top-15 team. 6 of 7 losses, they've been right there with a chance to win in the final sequence. We can debate what losing each of those games mean but I doubt there's another team in the country that can say that. Even Xavier's had a game where they were completely overwhelmed. UC had the X game down to 5 at one point.

Not saying they're a national title contender or anything but until they get trampled or lose to a dog team, I'm cautiously hopeful.

This team is anything but a bunch of gazelles. That's the problem, they have some athletes and some all around players and it doesn't seem to be mixing well.

Troy is an all-around player but is a PG without natural PG instincts and isn't a pure shooter. I keep telling everyone that his shot is anything but pretty which is why he is inconsistent. And sometimes he doesn't even jump on his shots, other times he does. ps - don't take that as me being a Troy hater, I like him.

Evans has a smooth shot, not sure what his problem is but he needs to fix it asap. But he'll be good.

Not sure what to think of Cumberland w/o watching him in person but he also looks like he gets no lift on his shot and doesn't appear overly athletic. But hopefully he is a high IQ player that doesn't need to rely on athleticism. He definitely looks built.

I keep reading this and at times seeing it with my own eyes, but at some point it's on Cronin. If Troy keeps slowing it down, bench him. Lesson should have been taught a long time ago. JJ sure as hell doesn't slow it down. But of course now Mick can't afford to teach him a lesson because their season is on the line. But that's on Mick.

I agree. But at the same time, we had a million chances. It is easy as a fan to use hind sight and say we shouldn't have taken those shots bc none of them went in. But on the flip side, we had division 1 athletes shooting virtual practice shots in many situations. It will never be part of the plan for a good team to tell very capable shooters to pass on shots that any division 1 player should be taking without hesitation.
Jacob I enjoy reading what you have to say. However, you knew there was a however coming lol: on one possession Cobb Shot two or three straight threes. They were rushed shots, they were not good shots. He was not wide open. We did not swing the ball we did not move the defense. That is not winning basketball. And Cobb my favorite player on the team.

We did speed it up, and I saw Mick imploring Troy. But late in the game, and when we were down, I don't believe we got the ball to half court quick enough nor ran the O quick enuf. When you're down you need possessions. You can't expect to outscore the team 6-2 ( 3 offensive possessions) or 8-4. Down the stretch to barely leave enough time in the game to tie or win by one. On the same point, the whole second half we should have played a little bit faster. It's hard to come back from 15. We ran out of possessions and time. That said we fight back. We really needed the game though.
