Word around Colerain township is Coach Coombs has expressed interest in taking over the program if given the chance. Spoke to a St. X booster who says the school is concerned Specht will be on a Coombs staff at UC.

what makes anyone think combs is an upgrade over the awful Tubberville?

Go get a real coach.
How does anyone really know?? Whom knows who will succeed. Ex- when Skip Holz was hired, or Charlie Strong, or anyone. Of course get the best possible candidate. But I'll take anyone whom wins. Can Coombs really recruit outside OH?

I expressed interest in taking over Apple when Steve Jobs died. There is nothing other than his recruiting ties to Ohio that make him even worth consideration. Brohm, Satterfield, or pick any good coordinator at the p5 level will be ahead of Coombs. He will not be the next head at Cincinnati. If he is then everyone else said no.

I would venture to say the fact everywhere he's been his position group has had very good success and his recruiting ability are pretty good qualifications. He's also a master motivator and has local ties and a passion for the program. He's been offered coordinator positions at P5 schools but has turned them down to stay loyal.

Essentially the guys complaining about Tuberville are wanting to replace him with guys just like him when it comes to career history. With the current way college football is set up, ZERO young up and coming coaches are going to leave a coordinator situation at a P5 school to coach in the AAC. If they do, your looking at a Tom Herman situation where even if they do have success, they are leaving 2 years later. So that leaves you limited options. Essentially you'd be picking from a Tuberville clone or a no name guy from smaller school.

I'm of the opinion the administration needs to find stability and passion. Someone who can recruit the local talent and build relationships with high school coaches. This program was at its peak when they established a firm grasp on local kids.

When Urban Meyer wants a kid bad, he sends Coombs to go get him so yes he can recruit outside of Ohio. For on campus visits he has Coombs spend a huge amount of time with all the recruits. I think if Urban trusts him, he might just have some ability.

You are wrong.

P5 coordinators WILL take AAC jobs. Look at Scott Frost. And Matt Rhule wasn't a head coach either, that's worked out. Norvell was Arizona State's OC...he went to Memphis.

And if you lose these guys, that just means they did a good job. We've seen it work here. But what hasn't worked is hiring a dinosaur who has no aspirations to go anywhere else. AAC jobs are stepping-stone jobs, not dream jobs. We're no different. And there will never be a shortage of smaller time up and comers and P5 coordinators. The "stability" route just totally blew up in our face. While the stepping-stone approach worked 3 times in a row for us and is working across our conference.

The Apple comment was too funny! I hate it when people fight with each other over every little comment on here, we're all adults. But I certainly appreciate the jokes.

Ok first of all the comment I highlighted is DEMONSTRABLY false. His secondaries at UC and OSU have been carved and cut up year after year. He was so bad that Urban demoted him a few years ago. Second I have no idea what you are talking about when you say ZERO young up and coming coaches are leaving a P5 to coach in the AAC. WHAT?!?! They are doing it all over the place. Tom Herman (OSU) Scott Frost (Oregon) Chad Morris (Clemson) Mike Norvell (Arizona St.). And how would Brohm, Fleck, Satterfield, or any other young coach trying to climb the ladder be like Tubs? Tuberville is heading towards retirement, those guys best years are ahead of them. Nothing like Tubs. We did just fine when we were a stepping stone school. This whole argument was just ridiculous.

Yep.

Being a stepping stone school has gotten this program to exactly where it currently is. Herman is a complete outlier and will be gone after this season. Your naming coaches who aren't even close to Herman's level as a coordinator. Frosts offense was inconsistent at best after Mariota graduated, Chad Morris' defenses were routinely carved up by good offenses, and Mike Norvell had decent offenses at Arizona State but nothing special. Your lumping in names together to try and make your argument when really there is 1 coach among them that anyone outside the AAC was and are considering. Also if you read my comment instead of skimming I didn't compare these guys to Tuberville. My comment was if these guys aren't available your left with Tuberville clones.

By the way, who exactly would you like to replace Tuberville with? I get the sense your similar to this kind of guy: "The Reds should trade Homer Bailey for Mike Trout". It has always been funny to me the light in which some UC football fans see this program. Even IF another guy like Herman comes along and is interested in an AAC school, we aren't a top 5 program in the conference nor do we have the monetary resources programs like Memphis and Houston have.

I'm sorry man, but you have no idea what you're talking about.

And your comment was that ZERO (you even did all caps) P5 coordinators would take an AAC job. You were proven wrong. So now you're changing it to "Well but my point is they aren't on Herman's level"? Not what you said at first.

I know exactly what I'm talking about. What you highlighted in my comment is 1,000% true. If not, what exactly would you attribute to the program being where it is? Tuberville has been awful but the talent is not there either. Recruits don't want to play at a school where the coach will leave for a bigger job, they want stability. Being a stepping stone school has hurt recruiting, period.
