Cincinnati basketball coach Mick Cronin has emerged as a candidate for the vacant UNLV job, sources said Saturday.

Cronin has a 207-129 record in 10 seasons at Cincinnati. He has taken the Bearcats to six NCAA Tournaments in a row, including a trip to the Sweet 16 in 2012.

Before Cincinnati, he was the coach at Murray State from 2004 to 2006, compiling a record of 69-24. Two of those three seasons ended in trips to the NCAAs.

Cronin, 44, also has coached under Rick Pitino at Louisville and Bob Huggins at Cincinnati, learning the importance of putting together tough, physical teams. UNLV has struggled in such matchups against Mountain West rival San Diego State.

Cincinnati’s season ended Friday with a 78-76 NCAA Tournament loss to Saint Joseph’s, so UNLV could move quickly if it decides to seriously pursue Cronin. He also could work out a contract extension with the Bearcats, a source said.

The Bearcats stuck by Cronin, an alumnus of the school and a Cincinnati native, when he was forced to miss most of the 2014-15 season because of arterial dissection, a vascular condition.

No way. He isn't going anywhere. As much as I can't stand the man, he has U.C on the verge being basketball relevant again. I see big things coming for this team next season. All Cronin has to do is sit back and watch.

Its an irrelevant mid-major.program. It would be a perfect fit for both sides.

I couldn't see Cronin leaving these guys. He has some serious talent, and some great ambassadors for the program.

This can't be right. Who would hire him? They would have to pay a buy out. Why would a mid major school like UNLV want to pay a guy serious money (I think it's been mentioned that Mick is a very well paid coach in today's market) to accomplish as little as he has here. Could UNLV actually think they could lure our Coach away? I mean with our fan base, facilities and conference affiliation they must be crazy. It's obvious UNLV hasn't been reading our site.

Lived out west for many years. One of my favorite teams was the runnin rebels. Tark was a great coach. Took on the NCAA. That town is starving for a winner. In the day they were absolutely crazy for the rebels. Thomas and Mack arena is a nice facility. Town host many high school prospect games in the summer. I'm sure they are capable of laying a bunch of money on him.

Mick isn't going anywhere. I'm sure this is one of those times where his agent floated his name out there to get some pub. Maybe use it as leverage, though I don't think it will work in this case. It's UNLV for christ sake. It's also obvious from his post game comments that he pays attention to what the fan base says so maybe he is feeling the heat (even though he isn't on the hot seat) from the fans and is trying to turn it. Mick may have some interest from very low level P5 schools or some mid-majors but that's about it.

Either way, would there be a worse fit in college basketball than the UNLV "Runnin Rebels" and Mick? They may have to change their nickname.

He can stay with Pete Rose!

i'd be shocked if he left for this job but there will be others. He loves Cincinnati and it is a great place to raise children. Hope that is enough to keep him here.

Id prefer winning kept him at Cincinnati. 8/9 seeds....not so much. He's got work to do.

Clearly his agent is using this for a contract negotiation so I don't see him leaving for UNLV. I don't want him to leave but won't be heartbroken if he did.

Coaches have work to do 24/7. He has done his job and then some. He is more aware of what he needs to do then anyone posting here. You think he doesn't want to be coaching a program like the elite. His dream is to do it here at Cincy. To get there he needs things that the admin. must provide. It's my opinion if given those things he is more then capable of getting us there.

Certainly his agent is conducting business but Mick has made it abundantly clear on numerous ocassionally this is his preferred destination. If he leaves it's next man up. Like you I hope he stays.

Not happening. Nothing to see here. Not even worth a discussion.
Think your right but find it funny that many comment on his lack of coaching ability and mention that he makes to much money and here is a school willing to give him a raise and payout a 3 Mil buyout to get him to coach for them.

If he goes, UNLV is just one less school that we'll have to worry about on our quest to win a national championship. I don't know what they will do about their name though. The UNLV Walking Rebels just doesn't have the same pizazz.
