Mick a Candidate for UNLV?

I'm not arguing we are doomed if he leaves but let's not pretend it's going to be easy to get a good coach and recruiter in here. Be careful what you wish for because things could be alot worse than they are. Of course we would love for this to be a better program than it currently is however what's to say the next coach isn't much worse.

Wondering what if is the worst thing there is. You can always use what if as an argument against change.

Cronin will never make it to UNLV. After all, certain people on this site have told us over and over about all the P5 jobs he's going to get if he's available. Those ADs are all lining up today to jump into the bidding war I'm sure.

I support our players, program, and our coach (whoever that may be). I think Cronin has done an admirable job in many many ways! If we part ways it may or may not be the best thing we can do...what do I know. We have become stagnant and have not reached the heights we have in the past. About 40% of me wants to give Cronin the benefit of the doubt that he can accomplish more soon but 60% of me thinks I would be okay seeing if a new face could do the same. This was my year I was hoping to see "new heights" but it didn't happen and I am pretty sure it could have with the current group of players.

I don't think it is okay to insult or humiliate the guy for giving his heart and soul to our program and the players. In fact I don't think he deserves that even one bit. Not performing up to someone elses standards is no reason to humiliate a coach or player. This includes guys like Moore....they just don't deserve it.

If he (Cronin) left I would be the first in line to shake his hand and say thank you for giving it your all...sorry things didn't work out.

I would wish him good luck, not thank you. He was paid an amazing amount of money. The thank you should come from him.

I'm sure he will say thanks...but I'm sure the University won't lack the class to say it back

That's stupid L-T. You and your booster buddies have the right to be unimpressed by cronin for not living up to your standards, but the fact you don't think he deserves a thank you for (at the very least) stopping the bleeding post-huggs is proof of your hard headedness.

Again, my heart strings aren't tugged for guys making elite money (Millions). But, I certainly would shake his hand and wish him good luck, If a thank you would eventually come out, would depend on the conversation.

Exactly. I am not arguing he should be fired. I am arguing against those that think we are doomed and no one can do the job Mick has done.

It's my opinion that UC Basketball could eventually survive Mick's departure.

It's also my opinion that we lose one season, if not two, should Mick decide to leave. Cumberland will ABSOLUTELY NOT come here if Mick leaves. Evans could leave. Clark could leave. There's always attrition on the roster and in recruiting when a coach departs.

And if anyone believes it isn't a near certainty that Cumberland de-commits, you haven't been paying attention to his recruitment. Mick developed a personal relationship with him and it's the primary if not only reason Jarron signed.

And while there are good coaches out there that would take the job, there's no guarantee of anything. And I can't possibly fathom these "high standards" that were set before Mick took the job that he hasn't lived up to. 1 Final Four since the '60s. 3 Elite Eights - all of them between '92-'95. Plenty of 1st and 2nd round exits. I was as proud as anyone of our basketball program during that time and will defend it to the death but let's not kid ourselves about the perception of the program by anyone outside of Cincinnati and the Alumni base. Mick has taken us to a Sweet 16 and 6 straight NCAA tournaments and he's done it with good kids who go to class and represent us all with class. The disrespect shown him on this thread says little about him and everything about how delusional fan bases can be at times.

Doogle, we were a national brand back then. We were top 10 most years and rarely out of the top 20, and were #1 a number of times, which means sportscenter highlights and recognition continuously. It is why when Michael Jordan created his new uniform brand that he selected us as one of the 2 or 3 programs to wear it. Our games weren't buried on some obscure cable channel that half our fans don't get. We were on prime time network tv. Dick Vitale came to our midnight madness and it was televised nationally on ESPN, and by the way, it was nearly a capacity crowd in those years with people arriving three hours early to stand by waiting for the doors to open. Your post is selling those years waaaaay short. To only talk about NCAA results, is not even telling a tenth of the story. We got to enjoy MacDonald's all americans, juco all americans, 1st round draft picks, numerous NBA players (great NBA players). The C-Paw brand attire was one of the best selling in the nation...and most recognizable. I could go on, but the point is, this 10 year era is not even a light at the end of that tunnel. It's not even remotely comparable.

Ironically we only got those Jordan brand uniforms because UNLV was about to go on probation and we had the same color schemes and Huggs had a good relationship with the Nike guys.

10 or 15 years ago we were a basketball school. People also fail to realize how the landscape of college athletics have changed. Our brand has disappeared not because of anything Mick has done but what he inherited. Losing our big east affiliation. Going all in as a football school. NCAA going to a P-5 model has hurt us. We'll survive if he leaves but it will be risky and a set back. I've always been amazed from day1 how much criticism Mick has taken. It's like he forced Huggins to drive around the city impaired and **** canned the program. He has worked his *** off sorting through many obstacles along the way and while we may not be as good a brand as were there is much more to that story then the product he has put on the floor. We have aimed all our anger at him when all he has done was improve what he was handed. As a donor I'd be furious with how we handled conference realignment. I be incensed that we invested a boatload of money with no guarantee it will improve our situation at the cost of the basketball program which was the staple of the athletic programs for years. Why do they get to walk between the rain drops. What could that 80 mil done for our basketball program? Will survive if Mick leaves but it will because of how he righted the ship after a freaking disaster. Otherwise we may have been DePaul. So saying your glad he is leaving is short sighted and stupid in my opinion. If he feels he has a better opportunity and leaves I will say thanks and the best of luck. You helped us survive a very shortsighted administion, a self indulgent coach and did it while being vilified for your whole tenure. Look out for yourself Mick I certainly couldn't blame you.

I don't know who the replacement candidates would be but if this has been a somewhat mutual cutting of ties I would be shocked if the university would be sitting in a position where they don't already have some good candidates in mind or have already talked with

Cronin leaves does anyone think we'd even be competitive for 2 years? Cumberland wouldn't come, decent chance Evans/Clark don't finish career here.

We'd be .500 for 2 years.

Yeah we will be absolutely screwed if he leaves. It will 100 percent get worse

I'd bet Evans and Clark don't go anywhere and UC still has a good shot at Cumberland depending on who they would hire. Cumberland sure as hell isn't going to UNLV and the kid is a bearcat fan.

Pretty confident it won't happen. It just doesn't make sense for so many reasons. Lot of trolls out there that love to make this stuff up. Hopefully this gets discussed on the radio show.

Yeah I'm sure it will get discussed with it hitting main stream media. They have to address it.

Check out President Onos latest tweet. Take it for what it's worth. Indicates he's spoken to Mick and he isn't going anywhere.

@PrezOno
Great conversation with Mick Cronin today. Made it clear he is a key member of our team here at UC.

^Is this him trying to get Cronin to stay? Or was Cronin the one making it clear that he was a key member?
