Just saying if you were showing tweets from someone who had no bias to the situation it would be a hell of a lot more credible and believable.

Shortly after 10 p.m. Tuesday, NetJets flight No. 953 landed at Atlantic Aviation on Tropicana Avenue, a quick drive from the Thomas & Mack Center. The flight's cargo included the top candidate to be UNLV’s next men’s basketball coach, Cincinnati’s Mick Cronin.

Two black Cadillac Escalades whisked away the 44-year old coach, UNLV Athletics Director Tina Kunzer-Murphy and a few other UNLV administrators and boosters, thus commencing the Cronin courting in Las Vegas. The Rebels plan to offer a contract that would pay reportedly as much as $3 million per season, although even Cronin’s current $1.8 million base package from the Bearcats would be by far the most UNLV has paid a coach.

Cronin just finished his 10th season at Cincinnati, his alma mater, and the Bearcats were bounced at the buzzer in the first round of this year’s NCAA Tournament. UNLV President Len Jessup was reportedly at the game, and he was among the group that greeted Cronin on Tuesday evening.

Cronin has led the Bearcats to the past six NCAA Tournaments, plus shared the American Athletic Conference regular season title in 2014 and top three finishes the last three years. Since a Sweet Sixteen run in 2012, however, Cincinnati is 3-8 in conference tournament and NCAA Tournament games.

UNLV has been in a protracted search for its next coach ever since asking Dave Rice to leave on Jan. 10, although realistically many conversations with coaches couldn’t fully take place until those teams’ seasons ended in March. Rumored targets Brad Underwood and Jamie Dixon recently took new jobs at Oklahoma State and TCU, respectively, and after discussing Cronin’s name with boosters on Saturday, Kunzer-Murphy has worked to get necessary support and funds to persuade Cronin to leave home.

Rice was making $700,000 annually on the extension he signed in 2014. The university still owed him close to $1 million for the remaining base salary while showing Rice the door, and the program is also on the hook for at least $365,620 in base salary next season for assistant coaches Stacey Augmon and Ryan Miller, who agreed to two-year deals last offseason. Interim coach Todd Simon left to take over at Southern Utah.

In 2014, Cronin signed a seven-year extension — his fourth extension at Cincinnati — that paid him $1.8 million annually with incentives that could push it to around $2.2 million. His buyout is $1 million. For weeks, sources have suggested that UNLV would have upwards of $2.5 million to pay a coach, but now there’s possibly more, for the right guy. Cronin has a .643 winning percentage over 13 years as a head coach, and the belief is that Cincinnati's best counter would be a commitment to better facilities and more funds for the basketball program.

One source said that the Board of Regents, which must ultimately approve the contract, has not yet seen any potential deal. With Cronin in town that could change very soon, and more than a week ago UNLV officials asked to have March 30 cleared for a special session that they hoped would approve the 12th coach in UNLV history.

Cronin started at Cincinnati in 1996 as a video coordinator for Bob Huggins and became a full-time assistant coach the following year. After four seasons under Huggins, Cronin became the associate head coach and recruiting coordinator at Louisville under Rick Pitino.

Two years later came his first head-coaching job at Murray State, where Cronin won one regular-season Ohio Valley Conference championship and earned two auto-bids to the NCAA Tournament in three seasons. That led Cronin back to Cincinnati, where he took over a program still recovering from Huggins’ resignation.

This isn’t the same kind of reclamation project, though the cupboard could be just as bare as rumors swirl around players prepared to depart if they’re dissatisfied with UNLV’s hire. If Cronin turns UNLV down, attention turns possibly to Arkansas-Little Rock’s Chris Beard, South Carolina’s Frank Martin or New Mexico State’s Marvin Menzies.

While reading the posts on this site over the past 2 years, there is one thing that is overly apparent. The rabid Cronin supporters appear to attack any member not in agreement with their beliefs in an aggressive manner. Most will immediately toss accusations that the non believers are somehow linked to the Bob Huggins movement. I find it to resemble the actions of a cult. It's like the church of "Cronintology." If a negative comment is made towards Mick the person will be labeled a "suppressive person" and be ousted by the group as a whole. Kind of fascinating.....and scary!

u say that as though you dont realize the ridiculous and large % of people who are completely ridiculously anti cronin for strange reasons. they almost want him to fail so they can say i told you so. not only that but the fact people assume things are better without him is almost dumbfounding to me

At this point, I just care about the players and recruits. I don't want to have to lose players bc of one selfish man. If players leave, hello massive rebuild mode. But that would be par for what UC fans have to endure.

Also, if Mick does leave I remember him two ways:

A quitter and a liar. A guy who simply couldn't get it done and did not reach his own goals. Someone who invested so much work into a massive project, but ultimately gave in to the temptation of more $. He basically would be a liar. He is doing what exactly what he has said is wrong with college basketball. Example, coaches leaving every few years, it hinders to build stability in programs. If he leaves, not like it matters but I would have lost all respect for him. I work in recruiting, and if Mick leaves, he reminds me of what I dislike about people in today's society. People are never content with what they have, they look at all the negatives instead of the positives, always looking for something "better" but most of the times people don't even truly know what "better" is for them. The grass isn't always greener on the other side. People that hop around, constantly looking for something else, wind up doing it repeatedly and its a character trait/flaw. This isn't Mick's first go at entertaining other jobs. Just go ahead and leave, but I would be confident, the answers for his displeasurment will not be found at UNLV.

2) I would view top administration as failures and partly to blame. I would seriously question further supporting them financially with their constant failures. Football is a train wreck right now. Ive lost interest in football due to keeping a coach who has the same amount of fire in him as my 90 yr old grandpa. Clearly Mick isn't happy. They have ignored the basketball program for over a decade. While Mick's numbers arent amazing, he deserves to have more access to things to succeed.

All in all, this looks horrible for the University. It's just ******** that we as fans have to continuously put up with this kind of **** on a more regular basis.

u cant honestly follow uc so closely and honestly think this would be about money?

Him actually visiting there makes me change my opinion to him leaving UC. Why would he go out there if he wasn't serious. He has been to the Mack center plenty of times for games, recruiting etc. We all know he has been around campus before. Its not like he is going there to see how the facilities are. He already knows that. This is all business.

theres no doubt about it. this is not a game hes legit thinking of leaving still hoping he wont tho

That's what's so funny. The Mick hatters can't see the mess Mick has been dealing with. All updates and getting chartered flights is on Mick, not the university. Mick getting a private plane for recruiting? Gregg Marshall gets one from Wichita State. It's the price of playing ball in today's world.

How far behind in money spent in UC to Uconn, Memphis and SMU? i know Houston is finally pumping money into hoops program after decades of not.

I've explained this before but my expectations are to be ranked in the Top 25 consistently, to sell out our arena on a regular basis, to compete for conference championships, to recruit and develop all Americans and NBA players and to achieve 1-4 seeds in the NCAA's on a regular basis. I want sweet 16's and Elite 8's and Final 4's.

I get those things won't all happen every year, and there will be down years mixed in, but I want to trend in that direction and Mick is not doing that.

I'd be happy if we started with the Top 25. Have one season where our team is ranked from start to finish. Create some buzz and excitement and get our fan base fired up again. That would be a nice start. But here we are at the end of year 10 and none of those things are happening with any type of regularity.

I know the response will be that the landscape has changed and we don't have the facilities and blah blah blah. Other coaches are doing more with less every year. It's on Mick to raise the bar and he's not doing it.

ya and i want a million dollars so what. this idea that the grass is automatically greener on the other side is laughable. its like u guys have not even thought that maybe things would get worse not better without him

At this point i hope he leaves on his own terms and clark/evans/cumberland decide to go to another school. If we're gonna start over let's start over and see what the new coach can bring in on his own. And anyone who wants to label cronin a liar and traitor has got to be one of the most delusional human beings walking on planet earth. If this is what the majority of the fans want then let it be done. I know you wanted to see him get fired and that satisfaction will not happen if he beats them to the punch but i say good for him. If it's time to move on then lets get on with it.
