On his radio show tonight Mick stated he has called Purdue, Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky, etc. about playing at 5/3 next season. None will play. He has called ESPN and asked for their help in scheduling a major opponent to 5/3rd. Such are the difficulties of scheduling OOC games.

At some point he's going to have to do a 2 for 1 or something just to get it rolling.

One could argue that the light schedule this year allowed Mick to weather the suspensions and change gears before conference season while still (mostly) winning games. Changing personnel and style mid-flow would've been difficult from a confidence-gaining standpoint had UC played Indiana and Michigan State instead of Wright State and Chicago State.

Please tell me you aren't advocating for this schedule.

The schedule is what it is at this point. Unless ESPN gets off their asses and sets up a big time non-conference matchup, there isn't going to be much the administration can do to improve the out of conference schedule. ESPN runs college sports. Just the way it is.

It has seemed to work out hasn't it?

No it hasn't worked at all. Quality wise Cincinnati is a top 30 team, IMO. However their computer number are horrible, they have an RPI of 115 and a horrible SOS. It has been an absolute disaster thus far...

Their current RPI prediction (obviously things can change) is a 20-11 (10-8) record, with an RPI of 84 and an SOS of 95. Those are no good...

Obviously nothing you can do about it this year, but I don't buy all the excuses and won't be happy if we see a similar schedule next year. If you want a good schedule, go play somewhere. Offer a 2 for 1. Get creative. Expand the budget....otherwise stop complaining about lack of fans support for these games.

Having a soft non conf schedule last season made sense in a lot of ways. The expectations really weren't that high and getting wins I can understand. This year though is a lot different with returning the core they did and being ranked in the pre season top 25 in almost every ranking, there was no reason to think this team could not handle a more difficult schedule. I realize we dont know the ins and outs of what goes into scheduling, but I really cant see why we dont have a more difficult schedule given the number of pretty good non power 6 schools that are always looking for games against quality opposition. Those kinds of schools have to play tough non conf schedules and are always trying to load up with them to help their RPI bc their conferences are weaker, so we might even be able to get some 2 for 1 deals in our favor with someone like a Wichita State.

My issue with the scheduling isnt whether we play big name schools like Mich St or Indiana. Sure that'd be ideal, but what they need to do more of is play quality small schools. If we cant get the Ohio States of the world in a 1 for 1, we almost definitely can get a 1 for 1 with dayton, and maybe even a 2 UC home games and 1 road game with them, or just play it at US Bank.

All of these teams listed below would be better to have on the schedule and help the RPI tremendously year in and year out by replacing the teams ranked 300th or worse. Try to load the schedule with top 150-200 teams and their RPI will be fine and they can do that by easily by playing the top teams in best non power 6 conferences. They dont need to play OSU, mich st, or Indiana etc with being in the BE. Just avoid at all costs the atrocious teams.

I'd try to get a bulk of the following teams every year on the non conf schedule in addition to keeping XU and Marshall.

I really struggle to think that these teams, or teams like them wont give us a home and home.

Dayton
Ohio University
Cleveland State
Butler
UNLV
BYU
San Diego State
Memphis
Temple
Murray State (mick's ties there should help right?}
Mizz State
Wichita State
Creighton
Gonzaga
St Mary's

Ervin you really want to play half of those teams in their gym in a 1 for 1?
I don't see any reason not too coming into a year like this. Getting battle tested early is good imo anyways bc it lets guys know how much they need to improve and where.

id do it unless we can get a 2 for 1 from them. He needs to stop whining about ohio state not playing us when uc wont go play those teams which are wanting the same thing.

There's a big difference between Ohio State not playing another school from a major conference and UC not wanting to go to a place like Murray State to play. UC went to Wright State this year. That was questionable IMO. Ohio State doesn't want to play UC because they are afraid of recruiting ramifications. I don't think UC is worried about recruiting against the Murray States of the world.

If you really think that is the reason Ohio State isn't playing UC this discussion is going nowhere and we'll agree to disagree.

So if were not worried about recruiting against the Murray States of the world, then what is the reason to not play good small schools that are and have been willing to play us. Sounds to me like were just afraid of going there and getting a loss. If were really that much better than them, why are we afraid of playing them.

There is no issue playing them. There is no reason to play them at THEIR gym. It is a lose-lose for UC.

Just like I am not a fan of UC football playing at Toledo next year in a 1 for 1, I would not be a fan of UC Basketball playing at any of these small schools. None of the other big time programs do this in the country. You want to be big time, you have to act big time. Mick needs to keep winning and keep hounding on ESPN to get these games. He should always aim high in his scheduling and then settle for less if ESPN won't give it to him.

You want to increase attendance and overal support, you have to play a stronger out of conference.

Dayton
Butler
BYU
Memphis
Temple
Creighton
Gonzaga

1 and 1 with these schools would be awesome and I have no problem going to any of these locations.

I am ok with the bolded games. The others would be worthless (on a 1 for 1 basis). Does anyone really think Wichita State or Mizz State is going to bring in the fans to 5/3?

We are on the same page... I thought Ervin brought mostly good schools up. I would think Mick could make one or two of those happen!?

Can't pull any worse than the Arkansas Pine Bluff's of the world.
