New Coach

He didn’t graduate from UC. There is an article mentioning he was finishing his studies at Texas Southern but I don’t see anything about graduating. I don’t care about the degree but I think it’s a requirement.

I'm sure he could pull together a "Interdisciplinary Studies" degree in a couple weeks. I like Erik Martin with NVE on staff. And predicate those decisions on "who are your AAU connections and who can you get immediately?"

Where do you think all coaches start? They all come start at mid majors.

I want a guy who can recruit. John Brannen is not that guy. He is the budget hire that puts us in line with Dayton, Ohio University and Miami of Ohio.

And just because most coaches start at mid-majors doesn't mean we need to hire one.

Nick Van Exel has real interest in the position and has NBA and G League coaching experience. I honestly think that's a home run hire. A guy who can relate to recruits and sell his college and NBA playing and coaching experience.

If he isn't the one, I would go with John Brannan.

Huge stretch calling NVE a "home run hire". No clue if the dude could even coach the recruits we HOPE he could get. No thanks. I'll say a couple extra Hale Mary's and do a couple extra good deeds in exchange for selling my soul to Rick Pitino....and I feel dirty saying it.

You sound like a winner

We are talking about the Horizon league (and I watched plenty of H league games). You know who else scored more than UC? Citadel!

It’s all relative. If UC would have played in that league with this same team, they’d have scored more points. If they’d have played in the ACC, less. I’m talking about philosophy. Whatever he’s doing translate to points. People are also telling me a guy can’t recruit but at the same time he’s winning. So obviously, working in the realm of things he’s working with, he’s recruiting well. He must be beating out comparable schools for players. Why would that change at UC? Would he be confused and still think he’s required to recruit Horizon League talent?

UC would have murdered the Horizon league. It'd be about as lopsided as Gonzaga in the WCC.

I think Brannan might be a good hire (I don't know). But nothing in his history indicates good recruiter. No AAU ties, no NBA ties, no recruiting top D-1 talent as an Assistant Head Coach, no regional ties to recruiting hotbeds.

I think X/O guys are dime a dozen (aside from generational talent like Brad Stevens). I think recruiters are really really rare. Obviously you want both. But if I had to choose, I would choose recruits now -> coaching later.

I know he was at Bama but I don't recall any recruits tied to him. Mick Cronin claimed Satterfield and Logan IIRC.

Makes sense. It’s all about the Johnnies and Joes and not the Xs and Os. I agree. I just don’t think we can take someone’s Horizon recruiting and flag it as a problem. Coach K would struggle there.

How do you know he can' recruit? He was at NKU and recruited pretty good for his level. They are the best team in the league and are set up to be next year. Seems like he is doing fine.

My dream: Huggins

My wants: Pitino

My ok withs: Nick Van Exel and brannen

My don’t wants: savino and Matta

whoever it is, let's hope they can get everyone to stay. I strong first year could really help going forward.
