New Coach

I lurk here just to see what's up and I have a friend who graduated from UC and rag on each other at times.

Cronin taking the UCLA job is a massive blessing in disguise. Your AD has a chance to move the program forward one of two ways. You can go the retread route or grab a young up and coming coach. McMahan and Brannon represent the latter. Pitino is the former.

I am huge believer in grabbing youth and moving foward for better or worse. When Mack left, I loved the Steele hire. At the end of the season he seemed to have proven his worth a bit.

McMahan or Brannon, I think are actual immediate improvements over Cronin. My only issue with them is that it was easy to hate on Cronin. Those two I actually like, but it could take some of the heat off of the shootout and make it more fun again. I liked Brannon for X if they didn't go with Steele.

Edit: I think if you get McMahan or Pitino you save Curtis (I really like this kid and was bummed when he decommitted). If Brannon is the new coach, I could see Curtis leaving. Change happens, it is a good thing in the end.

I agree with just about everything you said. My biggest concern with those two guys is, can they recruit on the level needed to compete nationally every season, win the conference and make the tournament every season. I have huge recruiting questions when it comes to both McMahon and Brannen

It’s not a blessing in disguise.

Xavier just missed the tourney with roughly 4-5 top 100 players on its roster.

Steele looked good in the end but he also played in the worst version of the big east in the kenpom era.

Literallyast years big east was the worst it’s ever been potentially, but at minimum the worst it’s ever been since 2002

X had 5 high DI recruits. James/Kennedy were not high D1 recruits (Kennedy left mid-conference). Then you have 3 grad transfers, 1 middle DI, 1 low DI, and 1 DII. Then you can toss in a 37 year old new head coach with guys he was an assistant. Assistants are friends, head coaches are there to lead. It is a tough transition from friend to tough leader. Miller/Mack both had trouble but were both in the A10 a more forgivable conference.

Considering with what he had, I think we had a season about as expected. Now, he actually has a good class coming in and I think the expectations go up a bit.

Recruiting is always a tough thing which is made harder in the American. Nowadays, the assistants do most of the recruiting. The head coach is the closer. UC has a full roster. Has Cumberland even declared without an agent? Curtis hasn't de-committed yet either. Your new coach doesn't have a bare cupboard or even a slim margin of error. He is going to probably have 11 players who have DI experience and one high level recruit.

Edit: my point is you can get someone who has a focus on both sides of the court. UC is not a top destination, neither is Xavier. You have to take a risk. Taking the youth is a risk. There were absolutely fans at X who wanted Miller back or Matta. I don't think the retread route is the way to go. Pitino also carries a stink with him, I don't think many fan bases want.

Big East was basically 2008 A10 last year.

Frank Martin keeps being named a lot of places....

Unsure what to think. He’s a solid coach and made a final four. But South Carolina has been bad the last couple of years. I read he is frustrated by the fan support, etc there and may want to move on to a place he can win. I do think he can win at UC. How has his recurring been at South Carolina?

Frank Martin is Mick 2.0 - defense first. I’m not saying he’s a BAD coach, but he absolutely is more of the same. Hard pass.

Gimme someone with an offensive mindset, please.

Don’t understand the hard pass on Frank. He’s in my top 5 of the names I’ve seen for sure

one NCAA tournament in 7 years, or something like that. You think fans here would accept that? He had one run to the final four and really hasn't done anything since. UC can find a much better coach.

I'm more concerned with whether they can coach. Hire a couple stud recruiters and they'll be fine so long as they can coach and they know the type of talent they want. One of Mick's biggest issues is he kept they same old staff that sucked at recruiting. Had he brought in new staff members who could recruit he would have done much better.

I have the impression that Frank Martin's personality is just something most high school kids aren't looking for these days. I doubt he can recruit better than what he has been, which hasn't been that great.

I'd rather take a chance on someone rising in the ranks right now.

Basically this, plus I’m just tired of the “ToUgHnEsS and dEfEnsE wins” thing. We’ve had that. Offense wins. Shooting wins. Give me something new.

He makes mick look like a god on offense.

Go check his offensive numbers. Dreadful.

Say no to Frank

Anyone want my season tickets.

If frank martin is the guy... I’m out.

Horrible offensive cosch. 1 tourney in 6 years. Getting out recruited by mick In the AAC.

I’ll stop spending money with that shitty hire

Same with Pitino or Andy Kennedy. I'm done if any of those are hired. I'm 95% confident Pitino, AK, Martin, and Savino won't get much of a look.
