OT: Tournament Discussion

UConn can get any shot they want offensively. I think we underrated how good UC, SMU and UofL were defensively to hold these guys down in 8 total games.

The league was vastly underrated and disrespected in the selection and seeding process. Watching this tournament and the NIT really brings that into focus. The defense we saw this year was just at another level. What a great inaugural season for the American. I hate having to root for UCONN though.

Absolutely amazing tournament run for Connecticut!!! They have won 4 National Titles since 1999. (We've only made 2 Sweet 16's since '99). Incredibly elite program.

Defense definitely won that championship. UConn completely shut down Michigan State, Florida, and Kentucky! Outstanding job by those guys.

Never even considered the possibility of Kevin Ollie being able to lead a team to the national title. But big time props to him. He had maybe the most difficult path to the title and pulled it off. Their defense was great, but they had offense to go with it. I hope Mick realizes that balance is where it's at. We must become more than just a defensive team.

Both teams were good defensive (UC was a bit better) however UConn had 3 legit offensive weapons and a shooter in Giffey. It doesn't hurt to have one of the best college basketball players in the modern era (post 1985) either.

Being able to win different types of games in the tournament is always a huge plus. UConn won their first three games by scoring 89(OT), 77, and 81. Then they scored 60, 63, and 60 to win the title.

having Napier doesn't hurt either. Kid was clutch all year.

Mick needs to find out what these guys are doing to get their teams to peak in the tournament.

Oh how sweet it would be to have 2 playmakers like Napier and Boatright. Hopefully we'll have that soon with Troy and KJ.

Mick's got half of it figured out. Now just work on that offense.

Congrats to UCONN. James Young is sick. Poythress is a crazy athlete as well.

An interesting fact.....Tyler Olander was a starter in the national championship game as a freshman 3 years ago. Tonight, he didn't get off the bench as a senior. You don't see something like that very often.

And he has won more championships than Jim Boeheim

As huge of an accomplishment as that is, it's amazing to me they don't get more pub than they do.

I agree, they seemed much more nationally relevant around '00-'05. I think it because a lot of media people didn't think they were the best team in either '11 and '14. They were the best team in the country pretty much the whole season back in 2004 though.

I agree with this point from Bilas, they shouldn't have been arbitrarily banned last year.

UConn's APR ban was the application of an arbitrary standard having no bearing on education. It's like measuring health solely by height.

UConn wins both the Men's and Women's National Titles. They are a combined 13-0 in Title games (men 4-0, women 9-0). Talk about coming up big during big games...

UConn has put some distance between itself and the likes of Michigan State, Syracuse, etc. when considering the all-time great programs. UConn and Louisville are getting very close to "blue blood" status.

How is UCONN not "blue blood" status right now?

I think winning with a new coach just ended that argument. Its a great program.

Check out these five breakout players to watch for next season in college basketball:

Jermaine Lawrence, Cincinnati: If the Bearcats want to reach the NCAA Tournament in 2015, they need a major jump out of Lawrence. Cincinnati will graduate both Titus Rubles and Justin Jackson up front and the 6-foot-9 Lawrence is primed to step in to a starting role on the baseline as a sophomore. The skilled forward battled injury and consistency issues this past season as a freshman and only averaged 2.8 points and 2.9 rebounds in 15.0 minutes. Lawrence will need to triple that level of production if the Bearcats are to reach the field of 68 for the fifth consecutive year under Mick Cronin. It says here he's more than up to challenge.
