Interesting article in the Enquirer today. Larry Davis pretty much comes out and says Troy Caupain will be the starter, not Guyn. He also says that if 3 of the 5 freshman play well, we could suprise some people.

Here is the quote: “Relying on a freshman point guard, you never know, but he has a great demeanor,” Davis said. “I don’t think he’s going to succumb to the pressure. He can really score.”

I think you're reading too far into his quotes. I didn't get the impression that he was claiming him as the starter at all. Relying on freshman doesn't mean they have to start but he is expected to give solid minutes this year.

Still though, it is a much different tone than the coaches usually use when talking about freshman. Usually, coaches will say that x is the starter because he has more experience and until y proves tht he's ready, x is the starter. He sounds very optimistic that Caupain will push hard for the starting job and like you said, get a lot of minutes.

One thing that the article did make clear though, which for some reason people still had their doubts. Caupain was brought in to be a PG and not a SG. I still see Caupain starting next year. I havent seen him play, but I have seen Guyn play and if he is the starter we are in trouble

I see Caupain starting and Guyn still getting some minutes. KJ should be redshirted, IMO, because he isn't used to handling the ball and having to be a scorer and distributor. He was used almost exclusively as a SG in HS, whereas Caupain has some experience of being a PG and taking the ball up the floor. In all of his highlight videos, he is taking the ball up the court most of the time. KJ has added 12 pounds since he got to UC, but he is still pretty small and needs a little time to develop. Either he or Morman will be redshirted. Strickland will definitely receive solid minutes since we don't have lots of options for bigs, and of course, Lawrence will get plenty of minutes. Morman could definitely see some action, but we have such a logjam amongst the small forwards and SGs that it might not be a lot of minutes.

The fact of the matter is, if 2 of the the 3 between Caupain, Mormon, and KJ play, either Guyn or Davis won't be playing. JD3 is the huge X factor in all of this. I can see him playing at the 2 and backing up the point to keep his scoring ability in the game. The guard positions are going to be very interesting indeed and Davis or Guyn may be the odd man out.

Talent vs Experience. Should be an interesting battle for 4 of the 5 spots on the floor. SK is obviously the 2 guard but after that I dont think anyone has a starting spot locked up.

Really hard to perdict who will be playing beyond SK. Especially considering we haven't seen the five of them play any college ball,That said, having a team full of guys who have the opportunity to get meaningful playing time after being used as subs tells me there should be alot of guys working very very hard this summer. Guyn,Davis,Sanders,JJ,Narsuk,Rubles and Thomas all should be busting thier tails with the amount of PT that is available this coming year. Huge summer for those guys because eligibility wise all but Thomas are upper classmen. If they aren't ready to take the next step their roles will always be limited. Can't afford to get buried by incoming freshmen. Starter minutes are there for the taking who wants em. alsoi the incoming group no there is a opportunity to get meaningful minutes right out of the gate.

I didn't get that at all from that article. I took it more as "don't count Caupain out", rather than it's his job to lose.

For years, since taking over the program, Mick clearly had a divide between his best players and his backups in terms of talent. It's evening out now which makes more positions up for grabs.

PG. Cash is gone. Who takes over? There's no real clearcut answer. Competition will decide.

SG. Kilpatrick has this locked down. Incumbent.

SF. Parker is gone. Who takes over? The competition begins. Lawrence, Thomas, Sanders............???? A third guard maybe.......JDIII, KJ, Morman?

PF. JJ? Rubles? Unless he has worked on his game this offseason contrary to past years..........it's JJ's to lose. But I can see Mick using Rubles, Thomas, or Lawrence here.

C. With Gaines gone. And Nyarsuk a step behind. This position is clearly up for grabs. I see the road opened for Strickland now. I wonder if he's ready or not?

S K is the only one I see guaranteed to start. All the other positions are up for grabs, IMHO.

Pretty much agree with your post except at PF. It is Rubles position to lose he past JJ last year.

Rubles was a turnover liability last year, shoots like 3% on 3 pointers :D , and doesn't shoot much better anywhere else except for layups. He does rebound though. I'm not convinced he won't get his minutes cut if he hasn't worked on his shooting/scoring ability.

Bearcatboy's proposed lineup could easily be

PG Caupain
SG Kilpatrick
SF Thomas or Lawrence
PF Thomas or Lawrence
C JJ or Strickland

Strickland and the other 4 would give us the best offense, but our defense would struggle for awhile. Rebounding would probably be pretty good.

It's going to be an interesting season to say the least. I think it will be the most competition for spots we've seen under Mick.

Starting lineup

Caupain
Kilpatrick
Thomas/lawrence
Rubles
Jackson

It would be fun to see Thomas and Lawrence on the floor at the same time. Whether it's Rubles or Lawrence starting at the 4, both should see plenty of minutes. Not to mention that Johnson, Strickland, and Morman should push for court time as well. It's going to be interesting watching this team come together over the course of the year.

Need to start JJ at the 5 imo. The lineup would be very athletic with him in there. IF we decide to press Thomas, Titus/Lawrence and JJ would be a nightmare for opposing teams.

There is no way Rubles doesn't start he was the leading rebounder last year and he had a lot of turnovers last year because mick had him handling the ball but this year with all the new guards Rubles will be strictly a pf down low.
