he actually said we don't have talented enough players to run offensive sets all game. our players aren't capable of that.

"we don't have the shooting, we're not an elite shooting team. we don't have the players that can run 37 set plays in a game. thats not who we are, we would be a bad team if we tried to play that way."

Good Lord really? I am now officially concerned. As a fan I disagree.

We have 5 position players who can all make 3's at a decent clip. That is elite!

We have two bigs who can expose a 1 on 1 at a high level. That is elite!

We don't have the best penetrators but maybe we can be at least average there with Evans and Cumberland...and I don't know...maybe one player on the bench? The bench player being the best % 3 point shooter on the team? The bench player who gives you much more flexibility to run different sets?

thats a direct quote from last night. the context was him saying we must win with defense and rebounding. he was saying you have to know who you are, sometimes winning a lot can make you think you're better than you are.

While I share your fear of sharing a conference regular season title...I'm more afraid of actually not making it to the conference tourney championship. IF, IF, we end up with a two seed or three seed....we'd get red hot Houston in the semi's. Id actually have more confidence against Wichita.

As for the NCAA, i've said it since the X/FLA week that if we run into a team that runs an offense...even if they arent nearly as talented as us...we are in trouble.

I hope im wrong on all account here.

UC is going to have to face a good team in round 2, like Oklahoma or Kentucky

He recruited them--guys who can't score! Recruit some guys who can shoot and score! Mick's recruiting base is limited by Mick himself. He has pigeon-holed UC into "what it is" and there is no way out. Sorry to say, but the only way out is to change coaches.

the grass is not always greener. coaches can always improve as they go forward.

Guys who can get to the rim are the most important guys on the floor.

And our best players lack that. Look at all the best offensive teams. they have shooters surrounded by guys who can beat you off the dribble.

Grayson allen, duval for duke
Shamet, Reaves and MCduffie for WSU
Macura, GOodin, Marshall for Xavier

OHH and Kansas, was bad at getting to the rim, but now all the sudden they are attacking and getting fouled and are much more elite on offense.

we lack those guys. Williams is a NYC kid who can prob do that at some point, but not yet

Hey I get it. Defense, rebounding, and turnovers are HUGE!! All big things we need to focus on no doubt. We can win some games on bad shooting nights.

For him to come out and say we don't have good enough shooting in his best shooting year is extremely concerning. I think we have enough fire power there when we take the right shots. Part of our shooting woes over the years (outside of horrible shooters) has been generating the open looks we need. A penetrating guard who can kick it out for wide open looks for instance.

We don't have quick trigger accurate shooters like Houston or WSU...I admit that. But we have enough shooters to win games with the rest of the stuff he mentioned. 3 of our starters can knock down 40%. We have a PG sitting on the bench hitting over 40%. Cumberland has other assets to go with his 3 point %.

Lets face it though.

We aren't that good offensively and it ain't micks fault. We have zero killers on this team. When UC is on the floor, they don't know who their best player is. And that same issue affected Xavier last year when they played Sumner and Blueitt together.

We tried to score uptempo with Xavier early this year and tried Offensive first approach and we got killed.

We tried to do the same against WSU and realized quickly we were out gunned on that end of the floor.

Winning teams in march have guys who can make contested shots. DO we have that guy? Its not evans, he has to be open. ITs not cumberland, he pump fakes into a worse shot.

Im predicting a round of 32 exit until proven otherwise and keeping my expectations low. And I wont rule out a first round exit either.

I think I'll troy caupain in a big game over any guy on the floor we have right now.

Yah...I wish we had someone who could beat a team off the dribble....lol

Recruits

Do you guys realize that people like Xavier, Dayton, and Ohio State have a much larger number of possible recruits that actually will attend those schools than UC?

What I heard Cronin say re: Broome (between the lines paraphrase)...Cane wasn't working hard enough in practice...wasn't putting in the time. The last 7-10 practices he has, & it's paying off in results & he's happy for him & his results in the Wichita game.

Anyone have a different take?

I call bs.

Cronin is not being truthful. But the sad part about it is that none of the coaching staff have the balls to let him know he’s wrong. The bottom line is Mick doesn’t like anyone that has a buzz. So he has to keep players like Lance and Cane under wraps

I wanna know who's fault this would be? Who's job is it to find "killers"?

If you want to get to the next level you need to (as a coach) figure out the players who are going to get you there.

Now I don't agree completely here. I think we have enough weapons on this team to make a run. Whether or not you or Cronin does. I think we have a well balanced team...but we need to use it that way. We can't force the ball into the hands of two players when you have 5 weapons.

I think a lot of this IS Mick's fault. Either in recruiting or in player management. This is his best team by far...he better get the most out of it.

I can't tell if this is sarcasm or not. If not, I get you on the OSU one but I have to disagree with the other 2. The only reason we would have less possible recruits is because of Cronin himself.

Think about next year without Kyle and Gary and tell me you don't think this is the year we need to make a statement?

We will have the same guards...a little more matured...but we will be average at the very best at the 4 and 5 positions. Defensively we could be elite again...but offensively we will be bunk next year down low. If we are hoping Cane can give us a lift next year...we need to be hoping for it right now IMO!!

I can guarantee Chris Holtman noticed this as well and is looking to make a statement the first game in the renovated 5/3

What kinda offensive super star wants to come into this shitty league full of fricking crappy slow defensive teams.

Our league is 3rd world compared to everyone else and our leagues pace is god aweful. Its not an offensive league. Why would any offensive killer want to come to Cincinnati?

If Im Mick, I leave after this year, Go take a high major conference job for a team that is struggling (pitt would be a great job for him) and get the f out of this shit hole conference.

He will had left the place better than he found it with a new arena and in good standing.

I mean, you guys act like Mick is operating with Offensive Superstars. He got the best players that would come to CIncinnati. One top 50 player and he was borderline top 50 and isn't athletic. Were not supposed to be even as good as we are. Were OK on talent, not great at all.

listening to the show now. mick is talking about how the teams that have made the tournament 7 straight years are either full of nba players (duke) or defense and rebounding teams (gonzaga, michigan state, wisconsin).

does he really not know those 3 teams were all top 25 in offense in 5 of those 7 years? defense, rebounding, AND scoring. you have to have all 3 to advance (or you know, a bunch of nba players).

I just don't get it.

We've done the rockfight thing. We know how far we get with that...which isn't very. So we have already learned that. And in response, we go find players like Washington and Broome. But as soon as we play a competent offense, 1 or both of those guys is usually taken out of the game and limited to 15 or so minutes max. It's so stupid. Bc then we lose with Jenifer playing over Broome, or Brooks/Nsoseme playing over Washington. It's exactly how we've been losing all this time. Then we hear things about "gotta score", "need answers", "gotta score over 75 on this team". WELL YOU ALREADY KNOW THAT MICK AND YOU BENCH THE PLAYERS THAT CAN GET YOU THERE.

This is the best offense we may ever have under Cronin. And he supposedly realizes we need to score. So instead of grooming an amazing lineup all year, he been screwing around starting Justin Jenifer and benching 2 guys who were specifically brought to score, when we need points the most. It's a crime. Bc now we will lose the same way we always do against good teams. They will score bc they hit open shots and run good offense. We'll remove our players who can score, and we'll play 3 on 5. Then we'll go home bc we flat out cannot score in the mid 70s or higher if needed. We won't even try to. 25% of our playing time will go to guys who score 2 points max. So everytime Brooks gives up an and 1, or Nsoseme doesn't know what to do bc he's barely ever played organized basketball, or Jenifer has a guy shoot a 3 over him bc he's too short, we just don't get that back. At least Washington can go on a 7-0 run by himself in random spurts. But he's gotta be on the floor to do it. Same with Broome. These other guys just give us the same old same old. But hey, Cronin likes Jenifer better than Broome. So if we go home early, he can live with that. Smh.

Just tired of inferior players getting in the way of better players. It happens every single year with this coach. But he'll play the guys who he can control every possession. It'd make him too nervous to truly let the players go win it themselves. He must micro-manage.

Every time we play a team that can pass and shoot we get beat, dating back to facing Creighton and Harvard in the tourney. How good is our defense really if we always get beat when we play a team that can pass and shoot?

That's why we need to play Washington and Broome in those games and see (I know this is CRAZY) if we can score 80.
