I'm going to play devil's advocate here. Now, let me preface this by saying I was NOT happy with the OOC schedule this year. I thought it should have included a few more quality mid-majors and one-two top 25 matchups. Now we've been through this over and over- Oklahoma was way down because of the losses they endured to the NBA draft. UC got PUSHED out of the DUKE matchup by ESPN. So I don't fully blame UC for this. With that said I don't want to discuss the merits of why the schedule is what it is, who's to blame, etc. I want to actually look at how the teams they played are performing:
---Mount St. Mary's 10-17 (8-6 NEC)---
***IPFW 16-9 (9-5 SUMMIT)***
Florida A&M 11-15 (6-6 MEAC)
---Savannah St. 8-18 (Independent)---
***Dayton 18-9 (6-6 A10)***
***Wright St. 17-12 (10-7 Horizon)***
---Toledo 4-22 (1-11 MAC)---
Utah Valley 15-10 (Independent)
---Georgia Southern 4-24 (0-15 Southern)---
Oklahoma 12-13 (4-7 Big12)
Miami (OH) 14-12 (9-3 MAC)
---St. Francis (PA.) 7-18 (5-9 NEC)---
***Xavier 19-6 (10-1 A10)***
***Denotes potential 20-win team
---Denotes potential 20-loss team
I don't have the time to go through RPI #'s but I thought a quick look at how our OOC opponents were actually fairing would be nice.
Teams that turned out to be really solid:
IPFW
Dayton
Wright St.
Miami
Xavier
All of those games- AND the games with Utah Valley and Oklahoma appear to be solid for a Big East OOC schedule. You've got a top 25 win against X and some top 100 wins if everything pans out against Dayton and Miami (not sure where Wright St. stands right now).
The real trouble with the schedule as has been noted are the handful of bottom feeders that are REALLY dragging it down:
Mount St. Mary's
Savannah St.
Toledo
Georgia Southern
St. Francis (PA.)
All in all, the OOC schedule was too soft... though I think the numbers reflect it in a different light than reality. The 'Cats played some solid teams. Unfortunately because of the presence of the 250+ RPI teams and the lack of a high profile top 25 opponent, what would normally be half a dozen RPI stuffing wins that every Big East team feasts on each year is instead counted on to be the meat and potatoes. And that does not sit well with those that evaluate it.
