The Wes Miller Era

That's his new role. Under Archie, he helped bring in some very highly rated recruiting classes as an assistant coach.

interesting he went from assistant to admin role. Explains why he'd be looking to get out. Who was he the lead recruiter for?

Well he was an assistant for Archie, who doesn't have a job anymore. He played at Indiana, so a job in the athletic administration there was a natural fit.

I don't know which players he recruited to Indiana. Before that recruited Francis Alonso to UNCG and developed Ryan Anderson at Cal.

In Koval's junior season at Central Arkansas, they played at Baylor, Georgetown, Duke, Wichita St, and Marquette. He averaged 4 blocks in those games, and he scored 21 against Georgetown. His rebounding isn't great and the scoring is inconsistent, but he should be a capable rim protector.

Good info Sedz. I am okay with Koval. Just worried now Banks on a scholly and other UNCG guys in portal.

I would like to see at least a couple of big time portal guys. A big for sure and probably a wing.

Every player on the roster now is either a returnee or has connects to UNCG.

We will get a better look at what kind of recruiting chops Miller and his staff really have with these last few open scholarships.

The Newman commit makes me skeptical that we're going to land a big-time scoring transfer wing and that we'll settle with a JUCO or late HS commit.

I also think we end up with two more "bodies" to fill out the frontcourt rather than "impact players".

PG could be our biggest play on the market if DeJulius somehow doesn't return.

Unless it's Jarrett Hensley, I do not want anymore UNCG guys. I know we need bodies but with Banks added on scholarship, we have 5 spots left and I doubt we fill all 5 of those

I'd take Abdulsalam. We need a rebounder inside, and he provides that.

He does, but I don't want any more seniors. This year is probably a down year anyway. Better to use it for developing players. I'm okay with a few seniors for stability, but I'd say we've already got plenty (DDJ, Newman and Koval). We need to add some youth to develop.

I don't know about this guy. He looks a little slow and not much hops. He's not going to post up in the AAC. Looks like he can shoot a little and has decent handles but he's not the type of athlete I would want on a defense first squad.

If everybody uses their extra year, the remaining years of elibility remaining are:

4 - Saunders, Mason, Lakhin
3 - Davenport, MAW, Banks
2 - DDJ, Newman
1 - Koval

I'm fine with adding more young players, but we're not handcuffing ourselves by adding upperclassmen. It will open up more spots for future freshman classes. I'd rather put the best team together that we can right now.

He was a top 150 guy last year and Wes convinced him to come to UNCG over LSU and UNLV. He's a guy who if we got him out of high school we would be excited. But I would agree for the most part with you but I think his upside could be higher than anyone else we are going to get in this 2021 class.

Scares me that LSU was his only major offer and not sure how strong it was. But also I don't know why he didn't play much at all last year at UNCG. Was he injured?

If Wes brings him on he knows something about him. Could be a good project guy for junior and senior year IDK. He seems to be a tweener 3/4 kinda like Davenport.

He's not that poor of an athlete either. I'd say he's comparable to JD but a bit bigger (and obviously hasn't shown he can do it at the college level like JD has). I feel like he has some undersized 5 and stretch 4 potential. It seems like he wants to be a 3, but that seems even less likely than it does for JD.

I'm okay with him, though I do want us to add an elite athletic big (or two) even if they are developmental projects. Koval and Lakhin probably aren't going to have much success against Houston/Memphis. I don't want Wes to into the same trap that Brannen did of not understanding the level of physicality and athleticism in the AAC. But I'll see where these last scholarships go before I worry too much.

I can't find who gave him the really high rating in high school. 247 didn't have a ranking for him. One service might have ranked him really high out of nowhere and that throws off the composite.

His tape doesn't look great.

I just saw there is a thread on BCJ called "Commit Today" that looks like it was started this morning.

I'm assuming based on the previous comments in this thread this is about Hensely?

I think Rivals had him at 125

Probably a good guess since I think he just entered the portal

If it is Hensely I'm fine with adding a top 150 Freshman.

That said, with all of the moves thus far having ties to Greensboro, I have to admit I'm a little underwhelmed.

Don't get me wrong, I like Wes Miller and I think he can do a great job. And I know we need to fill spots and it's inevitable that a new coach is going to bring in some people he is familiar with. But what I really didn't want to see was a TON of UNCG guys being brought over. That goes for coaches and players.

I was just hoping to see some more of national presence, and to see coach show that he can secure a higher level of staff and players now that he has a higher level job. I know he's still got some time to do that with some additional spots so hopefully he's saving the best for last.
