As we all know the Crosstown Shootout can be somewhat unpredictable. It doesn't always matter who has the better team or the better season. This game is a point in time.

Filled with emotion and the desire for local (and national) respect it is the best inner city rivalry in college basketball hands down. As a whole the game rivals any other in intensity and drama.

We can talk x's and o's and player match ups but this game is often decided by a role player having a good game. He may not lead the team in scoring but they often score enough, rebound enough to be the difference. I think today it will be no different.

That's not to take away from the givens. UC needs Gates to come to play and they have to have good perimeter play, especially from Cashmere Wright. On defense they must contain X's big three of Frease, Lyons and Tu (keep Tu off the foul line).

Maybe I'm way off base here but my gut is telling me a Walker or a Mbodji will play a big part in who wins this game. It could be a Dez Wells or a G'Lawn Guyn but somebody off the radar will play a part in their teams victory today.

My guess is UC will go inside and X will attack and kick. Elbows will fly and tempers will flare. Rebounds will be hard to come by. A star will have a good, maybe even a great game, and others will wonder why their touch was off on this day of all days.

But in the end I think the edge will go to the team whose role players step up and play their roles. There isn't a big difference in the starting 5 of either team and I think both squads will play well today.

I'm expecting a very entertaining game and a very intense one. I think it will be one of the better Shootouts in recent years. Both teams have big reasons to want this game. Both feel they have something to prove and want to own this city.

I'm going to pick UC in a 68-64 upset today because I do think they will play inside out and I think Mbodji gives them the edge once you get past Gates and Frease. Of course I've been wrong about the Shootout before.

Couldn't agree about role players. Always seem to be one role player that steps his game up just a little bit. Win or lose, I will be back. I will be gone all day today but will stop by tomorrow. Go Muskies!

Good friend of mine that does VERY well picking games just texted me and says he has Bearcats big today. Hope he's right!

Wow. The refs are already making some ridiculous calls. We always get shitty refs at Xavier. It never fails.

How do you go for a stretch this long in a game like this with no passion? Gaines has given them a little spark.

do you really think its as simple as "no passion"

Theyre playing hard imo, they just arent very good

I agree they are getting wide open shots they just aren't making them.

Exactly wide open looks, looks at the basket, they are getting shots and missing. That's squarely on these players. Cashmere is a total no show this season. Let GG play. At least he plays hard, defense and attacks the basket. Wright can come off the bench. He is pitiful.

You are basing this off of about 4 or 5 missed layups, but overall the offense blows! Very few good looks at the basket and too many attempted 3's, AGAIN! Dont you see a common factor here? Its Mick. No ball movement, no screening, and no shooters. That is on Mick. With 6 min left the team is down 18 and Cash is walking the ball up the court looking over at Mick for a set. That drives me nuts!!!!!

Dont get me wrong the players deserve some of the grief, but for God sakes when players come and go and you still see the same re occuring theme, its the coach

As for the fight, Wells started it and Yancy Gates ended it!

Can't fault Gates, he's the one guy who showed up today.
Can fault Kilpatrick, when the three ball isn't there, stop shooting it.
Also, DUNK! Stop doing lay ups, if they're just going to block them time and again.

Overall, the fight was bad. Both sides are to blame for that, but honestly, this team needs to quit jacking 3's.
When it's not there, just drive man.

It was an embarassing ending for both teams today, unfortunate for the city as well. I'm embarassed to be a bearcat fan right now. From the way they played to the fight. I think G'lawn and Yancy may have played their last game as bearcats today. Oh and I guess Ellis didn't have as bad an injury as everyone thought. he sure didn't hesitate throwing punches with it. Anyone believe me now it was a bogus injury to try and get an injury red shirt? lol

Only 26% of their shots were threes. This argument holds no water.
