UC/Pitt Thread

That was my point in the other thread. People need to realize there is a ceiling based on talent. UC's talent isn't there to compete with these teams on the road. At home they have a better shot but have to play well to win.

Yes,

But..

Even the players that were supposed to be good, have been inconsistent at best. Cash and Gates were "all world recruits" according to ESPN and Mick.

Are you serious? We had so many open shots I couldn't believe it! Larry misses probably 6 open three's, SK misses a wide open three, we miss two dunks and an easy layup from DD, multiple open looks from inside the free throw line! Dear lord if we make just those 3 layups we are in the game! What game were you watching if you didn't think we had open looks?

I was watching the beat down Pitt was putting on our Cats. It always takes them to get down by 20 to realize they are playing in a game. Then they start playing more aggressive and actually look to get the ball to the basket.

Now what game were you watching?...Because up until late in the 2nd half each shot the Cats were taking were contested or tough, akward shots in the paint. Pitts D was not fazed by the screens UC set. Granted Larry and SK had a couple open looks, but it was far and few between

Since when? They were very talented to everyone right up until they started playing good teams.

Good teams will occasionally pull an upset, even on the road. The fact that UC is getting crushed by these teams is a bit troublesome.

I agree w/ Jeff.

Not sure anyone thought they were extremely talented. They won the games they were supposed to, and that (in and of itself) was progress.
UC still hadn't faced tough competition so the jury was still out on how they would do. I think most of us realized that it would be a tough rest of the season, and it certainly is that.

The one thing I didn't forsee is the lack of offensive production. Thought the team had turned the corner somewhat, and truly, it has and it hasn't.

While UC is playing more like a team, the outside shot is still a challenge, and the inside game is not the same against tough opponents.

Like it or not, MC must either develop players better, bring in shooters who are also athletic, as well as find a big man who can finish inside.

Or all the above.
Until then, we get what we get.

Unfortunately, these guys just don't fall off trees. I think AAU ball has really hurt basketball fundamentally. Before AAU was essentially mandatory if you want a high major scholarship, kids had time to work on the fundamentals, including shooting. They play so many games anymore that practice time is few and far between. Add in all the travel and I can't imagine they spend a whole lot of time in the gym shooting jump shots (or free throws for that matter). Being a good shooter just doesn't seem to be a big deal. It's almost as if you are categorized as a great shooter, you are automatically unathletic. Now, all the buzz words are "long" or "explosive" or a "leaper" or "slasher." If you hear "fundamentally sound" or "great shooter" it seems to have a conotation that the player is slow or unathletic. I think we can all thank Jay Bilas and ESPN's draft focus on this trend too.

I understand that. I'm ok if the shooters aren't so athletically inclined. ND, Butler, and others seem to do fine w/o them.
Teams can set pics and screens to get shooters open, but when UC is missing wide open shots...not much you can do about that.

This team isn't just missing open shots. They rarely get good looks because of their inept offense, don't get any easy points in transition, and shoot way too many shots out of the flow of the offense (one pass and shoot or pass the ball on the perimeter and jack up a shot. Of course they have missed a number of open looks here and there but every team does. It also doesn't help that Bishop and Dixon are terrible 3 point shooter yet are perfectly happy hoisting them up.

I see better than I hear.

I also don't sugar coat bad basketball. The lack of leadership on this team and the team before this one and before this one is directly related to the coaching. This subject is old , kind of like if Mike Brown gets it. Ask SWG if the Lumberjack might know what he is talkin about. I hope they win all the games remaining on the schedule but then again I see better than I hear.

No, I have always said I think the team will be better because it is more of a team, not more talented. That teamwork has broke down and they're being exposed. I did/do think they are more talented than some thought and think they are capable of showing better but lack the mental toughness to do so to this point.

I agree that we can lay some of it directly at the feet of the coach. When a team looks that bad on offense their is a major preparation issue. My point is we aren't getting into does he stay or does he go till the season is complete. There's still 8 games and a CT to play. They looked real good, now they look real bad. What will the remainder of the season bring? We don't know.

And nobody disagrees with you on this.

How did I get in the middle of this?

You two need to hug it out.

Huggins lost to Pitt tonight at WVU even though Aston Gibbs did not play for Pitt tonight. Wish Gibbs would have missed the UC game, UC probably would have won.
