UC vs. Syracuse

Jack, I made the same observation all year. I would give my kingdom for a inside scoring threat. People imply the problem with UC is that they have a low basketball IQ. They indicate they don't run a offense. both of these assumptions are off target. Do they make maisstakes sure. What team doesn't? Offensively and defensively people have to understand you coach trying to play to your strengths. The other coach trys to take those away. Then you have the game itself and its issues. Cold shooting,Foul trouble and injuries to name a few. Fact is this team does a couple of things consistently, Play hard and guard. They also rebound. If they had a post presence that could at least demand single coverage it would create so much more space we would be a top 5 team. This teams NCAA tourney will be based on how far Modj and Rubles can elevate their games. As PDoc said, I don't have much hope for Modj but I can see Rubles getting better each game. Give me a post up big man that can get position and finish at the hoop or kick out to wing when wings man drops down to double and we would be a threat to go all the way. Right now we are void of any threat down low allowing perimeter defenders to concentrate solely on the wings. Been that way all year. The fact that Cash,Parker and SK are having the seasons they are is a tribute to their individual talent and toughness.

Part of the problem is they don't even look for shots. Cheikh finished with 9 points against Cuse but he and Nyarsuk took 5 shots between them. Another problem is that SK took 16 shots, 15 from behind the 3 point line. Cash took 13 and 8 of those behind the arc and JP shot a more balance 5 of his 9 behind the line. 32 of 55 shots were 3 pointers. The Bearcats have to find a way to score from close and mid-range. Perhaps Rubles operating out of the high post more often could help. I think Cheikh can be better, but he has to learn to go up and finish strong. You can't just alllow a team to ignore you and play 5 on 4 on the perimeter.

Mbodj shows flashes of aggressiveness and athleticism followed by none. I really wish he was a junior.

Well said

You dont have to have a big man who can score to get shots inside the arc. Even with a decent post presense in Gates last season we saw the same thing, settling for too many 3's. A good system or flow can fix that. Fact is we dont have a big man with post moves and NOT scoring inside the paint or close to it is NOT an option. Find different ways

The 2nd half vs Cuse we started getting the ball down low and it worked out well, freeeing up slashers and open shooters

Mbodj, Nyarsuk, Jackson and Rubles have to stop passing up bunnies and put it up every time they have the ball 2 feet from the basket. Take it up strong and get fouled and/or finish it. Too many times they panic and kick it back out.

Exactly my point Jeff. In the Cuse game one particular play stands out for me. Parker fed Modj down low from the corner and Modj turned and shot a lay up right over the defender. The Cuse player looked absolutely stunned he shot it. Modj has some skills. The shame is that last year with the ankle injury he lost a ton of developemental time. I also hated the way he backed of Carter Williams and let him dunk. He has to put that guy on the free throw line. That guy needed to be picking himself off the floor going to the line.

That was also a quintessential charge. I know it wouldn't have felt good but it would have hurt Carter Williams more. Step up and take the charge, one of their best players gets a foul and thinks twice about taking it in again.
